Where can I find a rectangular lens hood for my pre-asph 35mm Summicron? I don't want to spend a fortune but I would really like some sort of hood and I prefer rectangular hoods. All the ones on eBay seem to be vented, metal circular hoods.

Not to hijack your thread, nightfly, but I would like to know where to buy just the hood cap for the rectangular hood at a decent (read: low) price.

I inquired about this at a local pro shop and they actually had one in stock, including the hood cap: $135 (CDN).

Just in case anyone is actually wondering what neighbourhood these things run brand new. I think the reality is that there isn't exactly a surplus of these items on the used market. Whoever has them is probably not interested in letting them go unless you get really, really lucky.

I could score one off Pierre ;)

Seriously though, I'd love to know where I can get a replacement cap as well.

The plastic rectangular hood is #12526. KEH has one for $45.00.

Would the #12526 hood fit the Type 3 35/2? The lens I have has nothing to stop a snap-on hood from rotating (SN 27116...)

I have friends who have that hood on their 2nd and 3rd gen 35/2. They don't seem to complain!

The hood has a couple of tabs to prevent rotation...I think...I filed mine down because they interfered with the fit on the 40/2.

That sounds promising... however, I had my 35/2 (3rd) CLA'd by DAG just a few days ago, and if I understood Don correctly, there was not a Leica square hood that would not rotate on this particular lens... But it sounds like maybe the hood made for the 4th gen 35/2 can sit tightly on the earlier edition of this lens thanks to the "pressure tabs" ?

Btw, I still have a new, $80 square hood for the 35mm Summilux, that I bought thinking it would fit my lens.. (and no 'lux to use it on :))

Folks

The lens hood I got with my 35 V4 has two lugs on it that fit into the slots on the lens. The hood doesn't rotate. I couldn't get a cap for the hood at a decent price [one of the German Leica shops had them cheap, but the postage was incredibly expensive to the UK, so I didn't bother]. I'm using mine with just a lens cap now, no filter nor hood, and the results are fine. Part of the reason for me for having a 35 V4 is that it's tiny, and the hood virtually doubles the length of the lens.

Well, I finally got 12526 hood and it fits my pre-3,000,000(SN) 32/2 Summicron, but I had to file the two tiny tabs mentioned in this thread. The hood sits fairly tightly on the lens but can be rotated by hand with just a tad less force than it takes to focus my recently CLA'd 35/2. Needless to say, the lens looks very, very sexy with the tiny square hood :)

I agree! It is a sex machine with that hood.. Of course.. put on a B+W digi pro UV MRC filter (It's chrome coloured), and it becomes even sexier :o
