The first image was taken with the J-12 and the last 2 with the J-8 and Kiev 4a.
It was a rainy and heavy overcast day and I was wet. :(

I had to go up on top of another building to get the angle I wanted for this one then had to wait for a hard rain to stop before shooting.
I was wet all afternoon.

Here's one more taken with the J-9. I was surprised at the excellent depth of field of the 85mm lens. :)

My only complaint on this one was the reflection of the car. He pulled up and parked as I was composing.

While I like your shots, I find it difficult to evaluate them without knowing what f-stop you were shooting at. The very first one, looks like the far background is out-of-focus? Was this intentional?

If I recall f/stop was f/2.8 since it was heavy overcast and rainy. I think the out of focus look is more the rainy haze than out of focus. I had taken cover under an overhang while waiting for the rain to stop.

Is there distorsion on the J12 photo?

The query because one of my J12s distorted badly (pincushion from memory) at the edge when I took a pic from a ferry showing parts of the ferry as a frame, your shot is more ambigious, I'll have to try my j12s (I have several) on a lens test chart next. My normal photos of trees etc. would not show distorsion

I thought Texas was dry, I think some counties are.

Sometimes you have to be a bit different to get a shot. If it works out then it is worth it..

I had to look at some of my other photos shot with this lens to answer your question. I didn't see any noticable distorsion in any of the pics.
Supposedly the retrofocus design of this lens is supposed to eliminate most distorsion but I want to do more tests with it on a bright sunny day.

We've been bone dry with temps well over 100 degrees. This was our first real rain in months. Even though I got wet I wasn't going to complain..

I went back and looked at the negs with a 15x loop and have come to the conclusion that the out of focus look is the print quality (or lack thereof) itself.
I'm going to scan the negs this weekend and have a closer look.
I can see detail in the neg that I can't in the scanned print.

All are outstanding shots, I can't get over how great Russian glass can be. I have a J-8 and J-12 in Kiev mount I'm presently shooting Fuji Sensia, hope to finish the roll soon. What film did you use?:)

A few months ago I wouldn't think about using Russian cameras/lens but now I'm convinced they are excellent performers.
The film used for these shots was Kodak BW400CN. The processed lab prints were a bit warm but converted to gray scale in Photoshop helped.

Interesting shots, monochromejrnl... partly for their unusual tonal qualities. Looking at the histograms confirms my initial impression of a scarcity of mid-tones. Histograms shaped like the two towers and center span of a suspension bridge; lots of very light tones, lots of very dark tones, least amount at center mid-tones. In the first shot the dark skin quality is remarkable, though, smooth and rich.
