View Full Version : 8/24/06 Top-FIVE photos in the past week

Rich Silfver

A long time ago we used to pick five photos posted in the past week.
The intent was to both highlight some of the great photos posted in the gallery (and give others a chance to see images that otherwise may have escaped them) - but it was also to take some time to look at the photos there and maybe think about WHY we like certain images

So...if you are up for it...browse through the gallery and post links to YOUR five top picks of images posted
Thursday 8/17 through Wednesday 8/23 (add some comments WHY they are your top picks as well if you got the time).

Note: There are a LOT of great images posted. This is not a competition. Just a few selected photos based on your own personal taste that you'd like for others to get a chance to see.

Being the first time we do this..for a long time now...I guess I couldn't help myself and had to 'break the rule' about only picking five images and ended up with seventeen.... See if you can do better than I did :)

It took me about an hour to go through the images (there are about 500 photos posted this past week) but it was absolutely worth it and I hope that something recurring like this will keep me going back to the gallery on a regular basis as it's good to mix in some photo viewing with all that bag/case/hood/lens-tech talk (that I also enjoy a lot).

So block out an hour...get comfy..and head over to the gallery for a bit.

#1 - TRIPLEFINGER'S 'Afternoon and sprinklers' (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=42109&limit=last7)
Why: I love the deep, rich black in this photo and how it's offset with the haze coming from the sprinklers.

#2 - ray_g's 'Wooden Sword' (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=42103&limit=last7)
Why: Love the look and composition. A well captured moment.

# 3 FrankS' 'sunflowers' (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=42085&limit=last7)
Why: I REALLY like the subject, DOF, etc here. It all just works. Great shot.

#4 Swann's 'Poplar Trees in early winter' (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=42067&limit=last7)
Why: The simplicity, clean and careful composition and muted colours does it for me.

#5 Santino's 'scratch' (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=42045&limit=last7)
Why: Different. Creative and at the same adhering to some well grounded compositional rules.

#6 Jocko's 'Bedlam bridge' (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=42013&limit=last7)
Why: Great contrast, composition, subject. I just really like it.

#7 Santino's 'swing' (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41999&limit=last7)
Why: A second one by santino. What can I say...I like the simplicity here. The tones, sharpness, centered composition all comes together.

#8 Kunger's 'Life in the shuk' (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41982&limit=last7)
Why: Excellent example of pj-style work using a wide angle. Great shot!

#9 Nachebia's 'Image181' (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41946&limit=last7)
Why: Example that shows that even 'posed' portraits can capture natural moments and emotions.

#10 mal's 'Clerk of Southwark Cathedral' (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41919)
Why: Excellent portrait!

#11 Sleepyheads' 'Untitled (Dublin)' (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41908&limit=last7)
Why: Different. Breaking rules - and getting away with it.

#12 kena's 'The Mill, breaker panel' (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41780&limit=last7)
Why: Record shot meets art

#13 Monz Ahmed's 'Zahra 1' (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41748&limit=last7)
Why: A really well executed studio portrait

#14: Rusifizio's 'Jamilah' (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41617&limit=last7)
Why: Speaking about great portraits...wow.

#15: Rusifizio's 'man and woman' (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41614&limit=last7)
Why: Classic streetphotography - timeless.

#16: Blakley's 'Wink' (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41587&limit=last7)
Why: Unusual portrait style that works. Love the colours and the extra space on top.

#17: Todd Hanz' 'Nozzle' (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41585&limit=last7)
Why: It just works. That and Todd's excellent post processing skills makes this image jump out.

So..what are your picks for photos posted to the gallery in that time frame?

Rich, I agree that if we all tried to do this more often, we would end up spending more time at looking and learning from pictures.

I just wish I had more time today, but I hope in the future...

Thanks, Yaron

This is a great idea. The five I would add are: 1. Tate modern (plummerl) 2. Doors (whitecat) 3. Slobber (julianphotoart) 4. Orangecut (daydan) and 5. There (nico). Lots of other good posts too.

Thankyou Rich! Very much appreciated.

This was much, much harder than I thought it would be. In the event, these 6 could easily be 26...

Swann - because it's sublime.
http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=42067&cpage=3&limit=last7#poststart

Nico - a powerful contrast between the loneliness of sordid reality and the glossy, intimate joy promised to us...
http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41987

Raid Amin - A pure moment of kitsch, absurdity, innocence and simple good nature, with a touch of Lartigue and Salomon
http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41924&limit=last7

Whitecat - an extraordinary urban landscape, with superb composition.
http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41912

Benilam - whose photographs are at once intensely local and intimate, but instantly accessible, human and humane.
http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41625&limit=last7

Keithsun888 - because of that underwater smile.

LOL!!

BTW, if you visit the gallery daily and use the Add to Favorites feature, providing a Best of the Week is a lot easier.

OK here are mine:
I had to do 10, and could have done 15~20, easily

Natchkebia's Image130 (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41783) A fun image with a strange sensibility.

pstevenin's A Former Journalist (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41802) A classic pose of a classic-looking gentleman

Jan's Tank Farm Study #5 (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41871) Popping Contrast and gorgeous color balance make this industrial landscape a looker

feenej's Girl (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41974) Body language and a look that says it all. Just a great natural, powerful candid.

sleepyhead's (untitled Dublin) (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41908) Edgy paranoia

thirteen's Done for the Day (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41898) The simplicity of everyday items and tasks

Jocko's Sideral Light (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=42011) Why? Look at it!

Whitecat's Bull Fight? (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41988) Great color and a great catch. The pause before the storm/charge

J. Borger's Sunny Day (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=42073) Just out of sheer respect for the master of RD-1 street shooting (visit Han's gallery) A tightly composed gem

Rusifizio's Jamilah (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41617) A powerful portrait. Eyes that mesmerize.

Todd's Street Blues II (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41728) A great pose wonderfully presented. Feels like Texas.

First of all thanks to Rich for this idea, it's good and will help me to improve my skills, and to Jocko and Terrafirmanada for choosing a shot of mine :).
Then I'd like to suggest to have a top 10 instead of 5 because ther's a lot of stuff that deserves to be mentioned in this thread.
So here - in confused order - my top 10 (sorry Rich but I've been not able to choose only 5 :)):

Vagabond: special delivery
RayPA: bird legs
Julianphotoart: Huh/eh?
Pstevenin: a former journalist http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=360594#post360594
Telenous: the traveller http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41706&limit=last7
Shutterflower: LA_4 http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=41606&limit=last7

Thanks for joining in nico. If you could, it would be great if you could post links to the images - it just makes it so much easier to pull them up on screen and will probably encourage more people to actually see them.
(No need to do 'fancy' hyperlinks - just copy and paste the URLs from your browser).

At risk of sounding like an oscar-night starlet, I want to thank Rich for this thread once again. I also want to thank everyone who has contributed so far, but, perhaps above all, to the members who have posted pictures in the last week. This has been a revelation to me. To sit down and look at hundreds of photographs, to realise the breadth of talent here. This thread - and I trust its successors - together with Ray's splendid critiques seem to me to resolve many of the problems discussed a couple of months ago. They add immeasurably to the richness of RFF. Thankyou gentleman.

All the best, Ian

Edit - (having read Joe's post below) - And to Gene! Please excuse the ignorance of a newbie!
