I wonder if there shouldn't be a thread - if there already is, please point me to it - for introductions and salutations... so that newbies can introduce themselves... or to give birthday/anniversary shout-outs?

ah , okay... I just thought it might be an idea to corral them in one post... because I see some people posting as newbies to introduce themselves... again, just an idea.

Welcome Nancy. Since you're from Ottawa you'll be expected to be our official RFF voice in parliament. Get an RFF baseball cap from Jorge and start lobbying!

Hey, I have a Senators hat!!! Got it when the Whalers left town.
Welcome Nancy.

I am waiting for the cami tops, or baby tees... :)
(Oddly enough this wasn't a post to introduce myself... but rather to find out if there was a specific location for newbies - more new than myself *wink* - to introduce themselves...)
:) N
P.S. Does it matter which party I support?
Just get us GST exemptions for all RF equipment, film, chemicals, developing etc. Say we're historical preservationists saving a dying Canadian tradition or some other BS....considering the average IQ in parliament these days it should be a piece of cake.

You'll find we're quite an informal group here, so we welcome any introductions, anywhere, anytime.

One thing I've found, being a relaitve newbie myself, is how darn friendly just about everyone--no, lets be generous--how EVERYONE is on this site. It's funny, we're just a disparate bunch of people who happen to like owning and shooting rangefinder cameras, for the most part. Some of us spend a heck of a lot of time tech talking, and some less so. It's fun. I generally visit once or twice a day, but then, I'm home alot, writing, so it makes for a "virtual pencil sharpening", in other words, doing something other than what I should be doing on the computer. Anyway, welcome. I have had some good experience with the classifieds: its easier than eBay, and cheaper, too, only two bucks to place an ad, no "final value fee" and all that stuff. I've bought a lens here and sold a Leica IIIf recently, with no hassle. I only wish I could afford to get a scanner so I could start putting up some of my photos, because I kind of feel a bit like I'm not sharing, but it will have to wait. Christmas present, maybe. Huh..doubt it, unless its to myself.

Just a question: Are there not places where one scanner-less individual could utilise, or rent a scanner... for such a purpose?

Given the current bid to increase the MPs salaries retroactively by the Harper regime... I am gonna say that any further cuts to the GST, or exemptions for any/all camera equipment... ain't gonna happen any time soon.

If you have a computer around, consider picking up an Epson 3490 scanner. They're about $140 and do a pretty good job with film.

Hi?
Yeah, I'm not a newbie. Far from it, actually. Trying to step back in. Believe it or not, I'm not having much trouble getting back into photography...but having a Canon P can do that. :)
My photographic goal right now is to fashion a 'lens' for my P that transforms the thing into a 'high tech' pinhole camera. I already have some basic ideas in place.

if no scanner you can use c41 b&w film and have it scanned at the same time as processing. i like the ilford xp2 myself.
try looking for a trade or a good used scanner.
i traded here for a canon 2710, not too shabby a scanner and traded for an oly 35 rc.
just a thought...
Welcome to RFF. I'm a newbie too. I found this forum to be an invaluable resource. The people here are extremely friendly and are passionate about rangefinder photography. Only downfall is the constant GAS cravings that this website induces.
The guy in this photo of yours kinda looks like dcsang. http://www.flickr.com/photos/somecanuckchick/181116955/
Welcome Nancy.
And since I'm one of the techtalkers when I'm not just aranging letters to form any sentence I can second back alleys sugestion, the old Canon FS2710 is a nice scanner although the software is a bit long in the tooth.
Just keep in mind that you need a SCSI card and the correct cable, which is a problem with SCSI.

Talking about scanners for just a sec...that idea about using XP2 and getting a cd rom or downloadable digitized images is a great idea, lots of places do that. But I was wondering about the quality of a flatbed scan for negs. I know that a proper film scanner is preferable, but they're quite pricey, even used. I recall seeing one here for over a grand. Where can I get some recommendations for good flatbed scanners that will do film reasonably well?

Hmm, I was thinking, what is the point getting good scanner for black and white? I mean you not going to scan negative to print right? you will scan it for the web or so, but not for print right? I own Nikon Coolscan 5000 and quality I get with negatives when I print with my canon I9900 is not that great, I am desperatly searching for used enlarger package :)

Hi Nancy,
Greatings from Greater Toronto/ the Golden Horseshoe and welcome to our part of the universe.
I have relatives in your part of the world, cousins in Ottawa and an aunt in Hawksbury east of you.
Bill
My experience with flatbed scanners and film is that you must have a light source in the lid of the scanner. Trying to scan film with reflected light is extremely frustrating and gives a very poor result.

i scan, make my best pic in photoshop and then email the file to a lab in town. i pick up my prints in a day or 2.
they look good to me.
in fact, i hang them next to older prints i made myself in my (former) darkroom. not one person has mentioned a noticable difference.

I hear if you know dcsang pretty well he will scan stuff for you. Of course, requires attendance at T.O. RFF gatherings as payment. :D
Oh, and welcome!
