Sorry for a dumb question: what does that do-hicky thing do that sticks up inside the IIf camera from the bottom plate? I'm pretty sure my IIIa doesn't have one.

That little thingie sticking up was added to prevent the film from slipping down and the image from running across the sprocket holes. Hi tek, eh?

Having those sprocket holes to be part of the picture gives a bit of texture. These tiny bits of imperfection is one reason I revert to using old or toy cameras. Somewhat similar to why some people love the Holga. I don't see these as flaws.

Many HCB pictures printed full frame show these sprocket holes. Some time ago, I saw a contact strip of Stanley Kubrick's early works as a photographer- this too showed sprocket holes breaching the frame.

Two attachments below- one shot with a Leica IIIc and the other with a FED-1 (or was it a Zorki-1)?

Well, SO FAR, I haven't had any sprocket holes in my pics. Strange my IIf doesn't have this. In fact, I'd never heard it until this thread.

Could be someone changed the baseplate on your IIf sometime in the past? As long as it works, it's no big deal. :)
