View Full Version : Japanesque Gold
And you guys thought I was kidding. :)
Today I got the Japanesque Gold vinyl covering for my M2.
Aki Asahi sent it on 8/12 (that is December 8 for those using odd American date notations) and already it arrived.
Aki was rather sceptical about how the JG would look on the M2 but he cut the cover for me anyway.
The cut of Aki's cover is very good. Cameraleather's back cover was a bit more acurate, where Aki's has a bit more rounded corners. But Aki's cut of the front cover is very good. Where cameraleather's cut only covered upto the screw holes and edges, Aki's cut is actually a little wider so the cover can be pushed under the screws and edges, thus making the whole camera covered just that bit neater.
Aki's price is also much friendlier: $15 compared to $50. True, the pink cover I got from cameraleather was genuine snake leather, and this JG cover is vinyl but Aki's leather cover prices are also lower than cameraleather's. Cameraleather, though, might have a larger selection of cover materials and camera models on offer.
Tomorrow I'll try to borrow my brother's digital camera and post one or two pics of the newly covered M2. :)

He's got a red snake cow leather for the Kiev that I'll probably get when I order a seal kit from him. I like the idea of a commie camera dressed in red... :D
William
I'd vote for metallic Jaguar green...
oh wait ! that one indeed exists !
ok ok, I admit, I'm a sucker for black leather... how 'bout adding some yellow flames ? :p

Charlton Heston seemed fond of starring in apocalyptic science-fiction films in the late 1960s and early '70s. There was Planet of the Apes, of course, and The Omega Man. But there was also 1973's Soylent Green, a strange detective film (based on Harry Harrison's Make Room! Make Room!) set in 2022 and starring Heston as a Manhattan cop trying to solve a murder in the overpopulated, overheated city. His roommate (a necessity in the overcrowded metropolis), played by Edward G. Robinson, tries telling him about a better time on Earth before there were no more resources or room left; but Heston doesn't care. Directed by Richard Fleischer (The Vikings), the film has a curious but largely successful mix of mystery and bleak futuristic vision, somewhat like Blade Runner but without the extraordinary art direction. This was Robinson's last film and he's easily the best thing about it; his final scene seems terribly appropriate in retrospect. Joseph Cotten makes an appearance as the man whose murder results in the revelation of a shocking secret. --Tom Keogh --This text refers to the VHS Tape edition.
Description
The is the year 2022. Overcrowding, pollution, and resource depletion have reduced society's leaders to finding food for the teeming masses. The answer is Soylent Green -- an artificial nourishment whose actual ingredients are not known by the public. Thorn is the tough homicide detective who stumbles onto the secret so terrifying no one would dare believe him.

Bob,
It starred Charlton Heston alright, but the movie was actually called "Soylent Green" and the premise was that in 2022, he's a cop investigating the food supply (which is government-controlled and supplied) and it is called "Soylent Green." Turns out the stuff is processed...people. Thus, his immortal cry - delivered with the same tenor and pitch as his "Planet of the Apes" solilquoys - "Soylent Green is PEOPLE!"

By the way, I'm thinking of recovering one of my canonets with either the spring green goat, or lavender lizard from CameraLeather.com.
I'd love to see the Japanesque when you're done.
By Jove! I unleashed a flurry of reminisceing! :)
CleverName, I've been thinking about the Lavender Lizard too. In retrospect that might have been an even nicer colour than the Paradise Pink. But I'm a sucker for bright colours and shiny things. :)

Ralph, I wish I had one like that!
Hmm, a good idea.... However, I'd have to get me a "junker" Kiev first, to try the painting... Wouldn't want to ruin my perfectly good one :)
BTW, has anyone done any DIY black paint jobs?
I've seen Jim Blazik (Fzorki) "Paint it Black" projects, and those look absolutely stunning! However, my experience with black paint is limited strictly to my DIY lens hoods :D
Does anyone have any pointers or advice for DIY black paint camera jobs?
It's a loooong winter ;)

And here it is... in full colour... the Leica M2 in its new Japanesque Gold vinyl covering!

Actually, the photo doesn't do proper justice to the covering. In reality it looks much much nicer. But I'm a boob when it comes to using these all automatic digital cameras with on-board flash and horrible focus selection. For this sort of thing I really need a proper all manual digital camera, but that's another story. :)
Anyway, what y'all think? An improvement over the Paradise Pink snake leather? At least it'll look very festive during Xmas and New Years (and Mongolian New Year next year in February).

Very tasteful! I love it! I'm sure there are Leica fanatics all over the world clutching at their hearts over this. But sometimes a boy just has to have some fun.
Wow, it's a "King" Leica (kinda' reminds me of Elvis, for some reason :D ).
Seriously, a very cool looking camera!
Bill:
And all this time, I thought Charlton Heston was yelling "Soylent Green is WEEVILS..." ;)
Wow - that is terrific.
Great, unique camera covering!
RML, your Leica ROCKS! (This is a good thing.) I could never warm up to the pink colour.

scary, but I gotta agree. The Gold version is much better looking than the older Pink version. Now I just need to see it in ... what do I hear? Red? Yeah, that's it: that's the ticket; red is what I want to see....
What? :D
William
agree, like it a lot more than the pink one, sorry :D
Denis, as for paint jobs, I'd say the key is taking off the chrome, may it be by sanding, inverse electrolysis (¿?) or chemical methods.
probably the chemical way involves handling pretty dangerous products so, beware !
Results though, can look great. And nope, didn't do the paint job myself. I already got it that way and have no idea who worked on it, but even the wind/rewind knobs are black painted.
I'm secretly thinking of stripping off the chrome of one of my FEDs but as the chemicals are dangerous and quite hard to get here in Holland (especially in small quantities) I'm thinking I'd better find a garage or such to do the stripping.
Then I'll need a place to spray the bare metal in a nice way, and have them bake the paint. Again i think a garage will be a good place.
Now, a good friend of mine works as a motorcycle mechanic....
FED in red anyone? :p
I really wish that Camera leather would come up with a replacement grip for Bessa R2. My green R2 would look great with snake skin! :p

How's that for RML dating himself by asking?
As Carl Perkins first crooned......."Blue suede......"
Yes, he did record it first.

stock for me.
A thread resuscitated from 2004! Now THAT'S auld lang syne. A while back I ordered a couple of standard coverings for a IIIf. When the package came my order was there, but there was also this mysterious quilted gold foil cover. I emailed Aki about it and he said it must have been stuck between the two he sent me, and no he did not want it back. I briefly considered buying a junk Barnack and putting this cover on it after plating the exposed top and bottom gold - I think with leaving the knobs and buttons chrome this would have looked awesome. Instead I used it as a pattern to cut out some black lizard I had picked up from DAG:

Just check with Aki and he ran out of that golden vinyl cover and couldn't find it anymore. What a shame.
