View Full Version : Value of Leica IIIf?
Im bidding on a minty IIIf on ebay. Just wondering what they're worth.. guy seems to have a pretty high reserve price on it.
I have not used a IIIf before, but I love the look of them.. are them a usuable camera too?
Daniel.
My valuation on the black dial IIIf is $275 because that is what I paid for mine.
A pristine red dial IIIf with a self-timer will bring more, but since one rarely if ever uses an electronic flash on a Leica III series or use a self-timer the black dial IIIf or a CLA'd IIIc is the way to go.
If you are patient, you can probably pick up a useable IIIf for under $200. It does not need to be "minty" to be useable. Then, you can get an Elmar or Summitar for another $100-$200, and maybe an SBOOI finder for around $100, and you've got a whole kit for under $500. If the camera does not need a CLA, that is.
My first IIIf which I mentioned, is a black dial did have a recent CLA and had been a pass around on this board. It was good to know the history of the camera.
Although I now have to Elmars a 2.8 and a coated 3.5, the collapsible Industar 50 and the 35mm focal length J-12 work like a charm on a IIIf.

There is a IIIf RD currently listed in the RFF classifieds.

..... and a bit over priced for black dial IIIf, even if it has been CLA'd. It is also wearing a pre-war, not a post-war Elmar.

the Leica IIIf price seems to be quite fluctuating.
I tried to buy one but my parents never allowed me to :'(
In December 2004, you could get a BD with a Summar 2/50 for 250€.
In March 2005 it was the price for a good BD body.
In May you needed 300$ for a the same
then the prices exploded. 4, 5, 600¤ for a body only. In the same time, the cost for a summitar would jump from 80-100 to 200+ $, even more for an Elmar, not talking of the Summicron.
I think it reached its paroxysm between September and November. You then needed 600$ for a good RD, even more if mint.
And between November and now, the prices fell, from 700 to 200 or so.
But it seemed it was a general trend. When a camera is suddently known as a wow camera, it price jumps, by 3 or 4 times sometimes. Ex : I bought my first Rollei T for 200$ in september 2004. I bought the second one in August 2005 for 350, but it was a bargain for ebay prices were alreay around 500$!! now prices plunged and returned to what they were in 2004.
700 Euros is what I'd expect to pay for a clean IIIg. Who would have guessed that Barnacks would be so popular in Europe?
Here (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7626046953&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT) is one IIIf BD in user condition that may or not be a good deal. I'll assume that it it may need to be CLA'd or maybe not.

The body is quite ordinary, but the lens is probably very rare. I've never seen one before.
