View Full Version : Ok, I'll look dumb and ask.
I've been on this forum for a while, and around cameras and photography for more than 60 years, but I can't seem to find what a couple of things mean. Please help.
First, GAS. I know it has something to do with collecting too many (if that's possible) cameras/equipment. and I have it, but what do the letters stand for?
The other one I just can't guess, that's FSU. I assume it has something to do with Russian copies of old German cameras, primarly Leicas. Again, what do the letters stand for?
Thanks in advance for all the responses this will likely get - I'm looking forward to the fun. :cool:

GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome
FSU - Former Soviet Union
Don't worry, the GAS one got me for a while too... I thought it was some private joke at first... Turns out I had something in common with everyone else before I even knew it!
Peter
PS There are no dumb questions around here as far as I'm concerned! Better to ask... You have probably already seen how much knowledge the people here on RFF have!

GAS=Gear Aquisition Syndrome
FSU=Former Soviet Union
We need to get a FAQ on this. The first term was invented here (I think) and the second has been around for awhile, but is not well known outside of Russian camera fanatic sites.

Helo Bruce, welcome to forum speak.
Good guesses on your part for what are gear acquisition syndrome and cameras from the former Soviet Union.
Thanks, guys. I'm much enlightened. So, i've got GAS, but no FSU equipment. I know where I stand. :cool:

Other forums have GAS too, don't they? As a member of the Keyboard Corner, we've had GAS for about 8 years now. One can never have too many analog synthesizers. And those things are really heavy :)

When I was a regular on TimeZone, we had a term called "WIS" which meant "Watch Idiot Savant." I suppose we are all "CIS" here.

Bruce: Welcome here; at first I wondered what thos acronyms meant, but I saw some posts with explanations so didn't have to ask.

Welcome to the forum, now that you know our dialect it won't be long till you become a Leicabater with a mad case of GAS, searching the classifieds for FSU's to hang all of your LTM's on. To save your bank account you might look up Tony at PF or Stephen at CQ, buy some CV's and maybe an R3A. Of course you might also want a ZI to relieve the M mount envy you'll inevitably get, but hey, you'll be fine :)

Does yours need one already? Wow, so much for reliability!
Really, though, ask Roger at the National Camera in Golden Valley, he should if anybody around the cities does.
Hi Bruce,
a tip (for if you haven't found it yet): in the horizontal navigation bar at the top of the page there is a search function. If you click on 'advanced search' you can even do a search in a specific forum category. Very useful!

LOL, however some of us are classic bottom feeder barnack users who will beat the bushes for a NOOKY for our Elmar and if real lucky a TUVOO for that VIOOH. (I just got a real nice orange ORAKO for my IIIF)

What scares me is I'm starting to get the drift of those Leica names... I just got outbid for a FIKUS for example :bang: (for both getting outbid and for knowing what a FIKUS is! LOL!)
