View Full Version : Hicks Rangefinder Book
I saw Roger and Frances HIcks' Rangefinder book at a Barnes & Noble tonight. I didn't know that they had written one. I browsed through it pretty quickly, because I didn't have the time. Iit looked pretty thorough, lots of history, lots of camera pictures, etc.
Anyone have this? Or is this just news to me, old news that I missed?
Edit: I guess it's old news! Came out in 2003!
:)
I have it, pretty informative, introductory-level book, in my humble opinion. Lots of illustrations, fun to read. Has a chapter on photographing technique but I must say I've learned much more just by asking questions here and reading old posts.

I saw it a Borders last year. The photographs weren't printed very well.
I read the reviews on Amazon and didn't buy it.

I've got it. It is pretty good. There is quite a bit of info on the Bessas.

IIRC, there's a Bessa featured on the cover.

It's a book very much like Roger, in the sense that it's kind of opinionated, but at least he's honest about it (he clarifies it's not THE book on rangefinders. I liked it, but, to be quite honest, didn't buy it. I did read it from cover to cover. The pics (of gear and the rest) are very good.

Very good Francisco, I don't know if I could have come up with that in words, I agree. I own and like the book, read parts of it regularly. It speaks well of the cameras that Roger and Frances own and use and provides a good bit of information on many RF cameras. It is not a one stop resource, but I am sure that was not the intent.

I've had this book for a while and its very enjoyable. He also writes a weekly column in the Amateur Photograper magazine. Always interresting, usually fun, sometimes contentious, but its also fun to wait for the readers letters which follow. Roger is liable to lay a trap, and it's amazing how many rise to the bait, and "unfrock" themselves. :D

I actually preordered it, and got it when it first came out. If I had a chance to read it first, I don't know if I would have bought it.
Don't get me wrong, it's a nice book - but akptc is right, it's more entry level that I expected. A good book for a person that's never owned or worked with a RF.

Ah well I've only been using R/F 's since 1961, however there is always something you didn't know in a book.
I have it and bought it a while ago after reading a review somewhere that did think it a good brief entry level treatment. It sits right on top of my copy of Princelle's book--the top of a stack of "gear-head" books that I read fairly often.
Opinionated (as are the authors) and not comprehensive but still good, I think.
