View Full Version : Losing Intrest in this site

Take this with a grain of salt as I am a upset with the performance of the site. I went after a camera body posted for sale. The end result was someone else is the happy new owner. Two posts were made for the item and both appeared at the same time. I just have an issue when it takes over 4 mins to get a post on and the 3 or 4 trys to get a PM out. I am getting tired of driving 7 miles or so to the office where I can get high speed and at home 8 out of 10 times it wont even load before the browser times out with my dial up connection. It's getting so I don't even think about coming on to check the posts as what I could do in 5 mins before now takes me 30 or more just to read a few new posts. Yes I know this a free site and George is doing his best with the problem but it's still bugging me. I don't know what other people are feeling on this problem but it's starting to effect my intrest here. John K
I haven't checked here in 3 days knowing the slow down issues. It seems to work much better today. The performance issue certainly doesn't help with traffic.

I figure at least the operating problems can and will be addressed and overcome soon. What is turning me off is the endless completely non-photo related threads and the arguing, whining, and "I want the last word" and "I'm right and you're an idiot for daring to post an opposing view" attitudes shown by some.
Try what I do, John. If I don't get my reply done in a few seconds, I quit and walk away.
This probably explains why you only see a small friction of what I want to say. ;)
What George said.
The technical issues can be resolved. The human ones are more difficult.

Performance is much better today. Jorge is moving the site to a new server soon.
If this was errant/misconfigured software, or a Denial-of-service attack, he is on it.
The site will be unavailable for several days when the "big move" is made.
As for the ranting and whining, haven't you ever been around Toddlers before?

John, you're not alone in the frustration department regarding slowness here. Taking a positive spin.. it'll be better in a while, whenever that is... ;- )
George, I'm with you. I wish there was a "fisticuffs @ RFF" thread. Then everyone who is OT and contentious could play there. I would know where it was and either step in or avoid the thread.
These things certainly are grinding a lot of RFF'ers down

The site performance has become a serious issue recently but I am confident the best is being done so that this will be resolved. Having been fairly busy with work and other issues, I don't feel particularly bothered. It's annoying, but that'll end up being fixed.
I spent these last two weeks at work fixing very serious network issues and returning home late, all turned up for the best, but lots of things needed to be adressed, people didn't always understand the full implications of what I had been doing, but they could see in my eyes and in my tiredness that I was working to resolve this.
I'm facing the opposite situation as yours, my home internet is faster than at work now, so my (meager these days) activity here happens when I'm quiet at home.
Hoping to see you around still,
Max

Friction is about right. That is what some of the recent threads were all about. Lets get back to our core business: photography. And the site IS a lot better today.
Howrever, at least up to a point, that's what forums are for. There's always room for disagreement, but I do agree that it is useless and childish to call each other names and/or put each other down.
My own view is that there is so much available in this website that I never run out of things to read over. The wide variety of 'brand name' threads keeps things interesting. I tend to gravitate toward the Russian RF threads. I've been sort of collectng same for a while, and it's quite interesting to read the ideas of others when it comes to 'FSU' cameras.

I know the pain you are feeling , I was trying to get the thread for the camera body to load also and by the time it loaded the camera was gone. I consider it a sign that I didn't need that camera, which I really really don't. But that has never stopped me in the past from acquiring more cameras.
The bickering does bother me more than the slow loading. I just go away for a couple of months and then come back. I think I saw an old African saying that goes something like this, "When two bull elephants fight, only the grass gets hurt." And so it is with the bickering.
Wayne
P.S. There will be other good deals that will show up in time and you will get your fair share.
The guy that runs this site seems to be on top of the issues and since I pay the same for this site as I do for a drink of water at the water fountain I say thanks for letting us know of the problems and glad to here your working them....All I can say about certain threads is don't bother with them. There is still a wealth of good info here and I apreciate it greatly. The fact that I have to wade through som BS to get there is just life in a forum I think.

At this level, the bickering doesn't really bother me. It seems mostly confined to threads about bickering. If a thread I'm interested in goes to hell, I walk away (this has never happend to me here).
The unavoidable parts of my life are contentious enough. I'm not going to participate in anything stressful related to my hobby. I do often wonder at the sheer number of folks that seem so intent on finding conflict. Seems to me that trouble and conflict of all types will seek you out every day in life. Why one would choose to seek these things as a form of entertainment is beyond me.
As to site performance...I've seen worse from services I paid for. My suggestion is to click that paypal button on the front page to help make sure Jorge always has the resources to keep ahead of the power curve.
I wish there was a "fisticuffs @ RFF" thread. Then everyone who is OT and contentious could play there. I would know where it was and either step in or avoid the thread.

I think I may be one of those RFF'ers to whom Jan refers. I wonder if it might be an idea to scrap the OT/general discussion forum, then at least it might be clear to all that we talk about photography. As it is, things are awful.

Jan, there is such a forum here. It is called "and now for something completely different". It is not visible on the active forums page, it is accessed from the "forums" page. Jorge has said that members can talk however, and about whatever they want, as long as there is no profanity.
It is like the soapbox forum on APUG (where you have to be a $ contributing member to access it.)

i share in the frustration.
yesterday the site seemed great but today, for me, it's slowing down again.
when the site is down for the transfer, i plan on staying away from the internet completely. i plan on doing some shooting, no matter what what the weather is like and getting back to the reason i like this place...the nature of rf and the people.
there are/have been a few that want to ruin this place and i can only assume that petty little people who have no real life of their own will always find a way to try to hurt others.
they probably stuck pins in their pets as kids.
these losers in life have a sickness, diagnosed or otherwise. i suggest you all walk away from the obvious trolls and they will soon wither from lack of attention.

Sorry you missed out on your deal. I know that the "slowness" of the past few days has been frustrating for many of us - and I'm glad to see that response time (and just getting a response) has improved over last day or two.
As to your other point, I think it is important to note that there is a difference between healthy debate and "bickering". The former requires thinking and respect for the opposing view. The latter is unneccesary.
But there is no "bright line" on where exactly one leaves off and the other begins.
Give me some time. New server is being built as I type this. Migration will follow shortly.

thanks for all the responses to my rant. I was just venting my frustration with the performance and I know George is working on it. Oh and don't hold any bad feelings toward the seller as he did what he thought was fair and the problems I am having are not his. Hope the new owner can get it up and running. Its realy a nice camera. John
What George said.
The technical issues can be resolved. The human ones are more difficult.
Hopefully, the coming of the new RFF book will help redirect us all back to what this forum is all about.
About 2 years ago, Photo.net went down and we lost almost a month's worth of posts. Across the entire site. That's probably thousands of posts. And many of us (myself included) paid a subscription fee. We pay a similar subscription fee at APUG and it's been quite stable, though sometimes as slow as RFF (I'm on a fast connection all the time, though, so if speed is proportional to connection speed - though it really shouldn't be linear - then slow for me is still pretty fast for others).
That RFF is somewhere in the middle - stable, but sometimes slow - seems just fine to me. The site is growing. I wouldn't give up on it yet. How many good communities do you really find on the internet?
About having a soapbox-esque forum (or, rather, confining more argumentative stuff to the ANFSCD forum) - I'll admit that I've been more combatitive than I should be on here (I will say that I think my posts to George's recent "desaturate" thread is out of character, though - I'm not usually like _that_). I'll try to tone it down, in case I have upset anyone.

I am sympathetic to those who may have problems with the site and some of the people who post here. But frankly, while the site has been unstable I have gotten more work done at home (and at work).
I am particularly sympathetic with Jorge's plight. He has a contest that he arranged with an advertiser ending in a few days. I am sure that he is sweating bullets at this point.

You may be onto something. OT and GD seem to generate more altercations than purpose driven discussion forums on every forum covering any topic I've ever been on. Just how animated can you get discussing Rodinal vs Diafine? Ok, some folks still do it but they're still more likely to agree to disagree on that subject than they are any of the other unconstrained topics.
Lets get back to our core business: photography. And the site IS a lot better today.
Statement like this always makes me laugh. How much can you TALK about photography?
I hunch the ones who hang around here everyday and post like madmen dont' do much photography. The ones who do are not here, I am pretty sure.

No he is not. He's a nice guy and is building a great community but seems to have to move servers frequently and the site needs tidying up.
Even if speed increases after the the next server move we'll be back here within six weeks needing a new server.
And there are site-wide errors which I told Jorge about several months ago.
I run sites myself and if somebody told me of a spelling error on a landing page I'd correct it same day. Jorge hasn't done that in about six months since I pointed it out, and that makes him seem like somebody who is not on top of his site.
As well as the spelling Jorge needs to sort out the speed issues, make the navigation consistent and rationalize the forums.
Thank you Jorge for setting up this site, I like what you write also, but it's time to get the professionals in to take it to the next level.

I am the guy who got the camera. I am sorry that you feel shut out. I also very narrowly missed a camera and a lens. If it makes you feel better, there are two things to keep in mind.
First, I logged on to the first thread before the second thread was posted. I did not see the second thread until after I posted then sent a PM on the first. You responded to the second thread. Did you click on the first thread and it did not respond, so you clicked on the second? Is that how you got to the second thread?
Second, I also spent several frustrating minutes with failed PM and post attempts on the first thread. I had several timeouts. Whether they were web/communication or database locking issues I don't know.

And now, back to photography.

I won't give up on this site. In fact, it's run a heck of a lot better by Jorge than if I were doing it. As for speed issues... they come and go. What's really good about this place is the human component (whether bickering or not). Things happen all the time, but all in all, with or without trolls, aggressive behavior and other things, I feel a lot freer posting questions and news here than in any other forum. After having seen some of my threads torn to shreds in a particular forum, I decided NEVER to post another there.
Of course, some of my threads have been kindly ignored here... but heck, I'm not taking it personally. Some people care about Rodinal, others (like me) still don't, but that's variety, the spice of life, right?
So, keep talking! :)

When I said he was on top of the issues all I meant was he has made us aware of them and is working on them. that honestly is all I can ask for something I'm getting for free. If this was a pay site I think many people would have some issues with the performance, I'm not sure how many would care to much about a few spelling errors. I will be honest i don't look to much at the astetics of the site and you very well may be right on alot of technical isssues the site may need. And if so i am not looking to nag you for it, you very well may be right. it does what i need it to do though and for that i am greatful. Besides I'm sure I have a half dozen mispelled words and grammer errors just in this post :p
I would be happy if the modertors quickly moved any thread which begins as, or evolves into a discussion that contains whining, arguements about film vs digital, politics, religion, and other devisive stuff, to the "and now for something completely different" forum. Consistency within a site is very important. So is the organization. With consistency and clear organization people can find their way around. It is very little work really to make the navigation consistent and to reorganize the topics a little.
A spelling error on a landing page is just plain sloppy.
The content is fine, the moderation is variable and the people are (generally) great people with a lot of knowledge and experience.

I've no idea of the economics of running this sort of site, but I'm willing to bet that Jorge isn't about to go vacationing with Mr. & Mrs. Gates any time soon.
Many people have made the point that this is a free site. Free. All of this great stuff and interaction. Free.
Jorge, how's about charging us a few bucks a month after the first month? People just naturally don't value what comes too cheaply.

Frank,
As I see it, the problem with this approach is that deciding when or if to move a thread turns the moderators into quasai-censors. Their judgement, no matter how dispassionately made, enters subjectivism into the decision process. No matter how objective they try to be, different moderators will have different "standards" as to whether and when to move a thread to the OT "completely different" forum.
If we apply your approach then in reality, this thread should have been moved after the second or third post.

The vBulletin software is off the shelf and very inexpensive, and the server rental is really not very much at all.
Once it's set up, a one day job at most, Jorge can carry on with his day job, leave his volunteer mods to keep things humming and invoice the advertisers.

if Jorge is anything like me (and hopefully he's much better), he wouldn't think of charging the members.. not for economic reasons, but because of the 'ownership' that people will feel entitled to.. since he is the sole owner of the site, he can do anything he wants with it.. charge some money, and he loses control.. I can respect that

That's a major concern. There have been a couple of particularly bad examples just today, to include foul language to test the moderators on otherwise okay threads.

Maybe what we need is to develop an alternative method of sellling in which split-second timing isn't as critical. This doesn't HAVE to be eBay Junior, ya know!
When I've sold things on RFF, I've usually done it on the basis of "best offer received by date X," setting date X far enough in the future that reasonably regular visitors have a chance to stumble across it.
It's just common sense that if you want to get the best price for your item, you want to give people plenty of time to up the price.

Example: A new guy with an FSU camera comes to RFF. Which forum does he look in? Would it be covered in 'Russian Made Rangefinder Cameras' or might it be in 'Other, including Fed, Zorki...'.

When I've sold things on RFF, I've usually done it on the basis of "best offer received by date X," setting date X far enough in the future that reasonably regular visitors have a chance to stumble across it.
It's just common sense that if you want to get the best price for your item, you want to give people plenty of time to up the price.
I've noticed that some people have been mildly flamed for posting links to their eBay auctions. Is this a definite no-no for the RFF buy/sell forum?
R.J.
Statement like this always makes me laugh. How much can you TALK about photography?
I hunch the ones who hang around here everyday and post like madmen dont' do much photography. The ones who do are not here, I am pretty sure.
In the interests of healthy debate - I do not want to let this statement pass without a counterpoint.
I regularly post here (although I do not consider myself a madman). And I do plenty of photography - check my Gallery. I regularly contribute to or initiate W/NW threads and just posted my three entries to the RFF Contest.
In fact, I got into hot water with some here when I posited that I thought the main purpose of the site was to display our photographs.
So, with all due respect, I refuse to accept that being a regular thread poster here means I am a non-picture taking poseur!

In honesty, although I really wasn't talking about you, I guess I wanted to note that continuing to say "This thread is in danger of being sent to the showers" is a good way to get it sent to the showers. Continually harping that "this thread is becoming vicious and mean-spirited" tends to make it such. Huh, guess that's intentional. Wow, that was hard to figure out. If someone says something you don't like, say 'booger' and watch it disappear. It reminds me of the childishness of the old "let's all ignore threads by people we don't like and reply like crazy people to ANY other thread to push down the one we don't want to see anymore off the front page." That one was fun.

When you make deal on this forum, a deal between two regular players of this site, a level of trust would have already been established from their past associations. If someone is using the site merely to promote a sale, and their post history speaks to that fact, then we obviously can't give them the level of legitimacy.

One of my first jobs was booting the computer by turning a long row of switches on or off, twenty or fifty switches or something, and then turning on the power.

A lot of it went to the Smithsonian. Most of the Bipolar Chips used (about 140,000) had gold caps. It was a lot of gold. The CPU time was $970 per hour. I re-wrote programs to execute faster, and saved way more than I cost in salary.
The Programming Manual that I have from the 1946 IBM Mark I would buy me a new Nikon SP-2005. I still need to get it to the Smithsonian. It was being tossed from the Library in 1979. I saw a speech by Grace Hopper in school, and brought it along to be autographed. She was surprised, and told me she personally wrote it.

Yeah, this is great stuff. It just goes to show what happens when the intellect of rangefinder shooters is let loose. Heaven help us all!!! :p :p

Since I am of celtic decent, i made it a point to know what was under it. And yes I have one and wear it every year at the Celtic festival, but the wind blows a lot, here, so I refrain from tradition

I still think invading England would give us the opportunity to create a digital Reid.

Okay,
Here's the Plan.
We let our hair grow long and look like Moe Howard, form a Rock Group, off we go.
Yeah, Yeah, yeah.
No One Expects The British Invasion.

Don't forget your sunblock. You will need at least SPF 45.

Oh Man, Iggy and the Stooges. We used to catch them on the tubeoocasionally when I was in high school. Usually late night weekend rockshows.
Totally American though. Completely raw and not as artsy as VelvetUnderground (who I aslo enjoyed). About the worst Iggy behavior Icaught on TV was smearing peanut butter on his torso while on camera.
A definite precursor to punk.

The English hate the French so much that the high speed Paris to london train loops right around London to come into a station in the south west of the city called Waterloo.
It humilates them every time they need to get a taxi there and the driver says 'You are too late for the battle'.

RJ: The old avatar was ditched because I wanted to try out an animated avatar.
Given that we're all visual people in here and technically talented I'm surprised that I've never seen another animation.

I figure at least the operating problems can and will be addressed and overcome soon. What is turning me off is the endless completely non-photo related threads and the arguing, whining, and "I want the last word" and "I'm right and you're an idiot for daring to post an opposing view" attitudes shown by some.
I 'm sorry to say I have to agree with this, and its the reason my "ignore" list is increasing in size. They are the types who can ONLY get their views aired on an internet site, if they behaved this way face to face in public, they would get their "lights punched out" so sadly they take it out on the rest of us. At least in the pub you can turn your back , and ignore them.
In fairness it seems to be a feature of many "interest" sites. I've seen the same on astronomy sites, another interest of mine, and on other photography forums. :bang:
Please Jorge whatever you do, don't remove the "ignore" feature, at least it gives us some control over this situation.
Oy.

Deep in the dark voids of my iPod I found The Passenger and Lust for Live. But since we have a blue sky and the sun is shining I'm more in a Loving Spoonfull state of mind and listen to Summer in the City.
Hm, I think I'll look for my headphones grab the next camera bag and take a walk.
>>Is it in England?<<
I wish.
I ran across the thread while visiting the "something different forum." Appears to have a mind of its own. Or perhaps the thread refused to be banished.

I'm borrowing the term from a previous poster and applying it in a different way... but we should consider "Happy Hour" as the term for the place where one can go to rant, yell, scream, piss and moan about things not RF specific.

And at times, it has been quite mindless.
