Now, this is a real guy web site,

http://www.duluthtrading.com/items/95321+BLK.asp

I am thinking that this bag would be a decent option to a camera satchel, with dedicated spots for your multi-tool, wrenches, screw drivers and the "honey do" list.

Perhaps a couple Domke accessory dividers will make it complete.

...and the price sounds right, too :D

it looks like a useful bag,...

At the bottom of the page there are some other bags, namely those for tools,....These also make excellent strong camera bags although the prices there look a bit high to me as I pay a lot less than this here in the Uk. I use several for different kits and purposes.

They have numerous good points;.......strongly made with wire reinforced top/opening so you can carry open on the shoulder by means of strap,....have many pockets along the insides for small items,...more on outside to park lencaps etc.,...available in various sizes,....inexpensive,...And,...don't look like pukka camera bags so nobody knows what you are carrying.

Only 'downer',...not too rainproof,...I have recently seen a plastic lined specimen.

Over here they are available form all the main DIY 'superstores' form about £10 (17USD??) less at tool stalls in street markets. There is now a 30" long model which would take a medium tripod,......i use it as a rehearsal bag to carry trumpet/cornet, music stand, metronome, music, mutes etc.

This looks like a good bag but I love my Domke bags! :D

looks good. my only concern is that it might look like it had a laptop in it.
peter, i'm getting a domke 4af next week, it's used and i have not seen it yet. do you think it would work for a canon p with a couple of lenses + film?

I've been carrying my Domke F something or other for over 10 years now. And thats more than 10 years of daily carrying. It carries my daytimer, sunglasses, keys, magazines, knife, cell phone charger cable, iPod, as well as my camera, a second lens, and some film. Its held up well considering its 4000+ days of continous use.

Its beat to all hell, but its taken the abuse in protecting anything I've put in it. I know I need to repleace it, but I can't. The new ones are so stiff, almost unworkable. My current one is so soft and molds itself to its contents and my hip. I just can't replace it.

This is almost as bad a the RF addiction virus!!

I have the new one sitting here in my office, and I transfer the contents every now and then, but after a couple days or a week or so, I move everything back to the old one :( I washed the new one at least a dozen times now, and it still feels like new.

The photo shows it unkept appearance. The staps were black and have faded to tan, rather than the straps being tan and the dark areas being dirt and grime. I wash the bag every couple of months. Its clean, even though it looks dirty.

Well, I did it. My new Man Purse is on the way. I have an ever ready case for my camera, and I will probably pick up a couple lens wraps for my lenses and delicate stuff I want to throw into the bag. Of course the spare outfit I carry for the boy will provide padding too.

"Always be Prepared"

You always thought that the Boy Scout motto had something to do with survival, it doesn't, it is all about fatherhood.:)

That's a nice story about the bag, Stephen. I particularly like the bit about putting the stuff in the new bag then taking it out again. :) I have an old F-2 and a fairly new F-3X. I'm persevering with the F-3X because I really like it's smaller size. Maybe you should wash the new bag a few more times... ;)

Absolutely, Joe. More than enough room. You will be able to fit a lens on your camera and comfortably fit it into the larger insert. Capture from the Domke catalog below:

rover,

take a look at some 'real' camera bags and see if any have an insert that would fit your new bag. the inserts can usually be ordered seperately. i've had an insert for years now that transfers from one old canvas bag to another as they wear out.

Domke sells inserts, that still is an option, we shall see.

Peter, My daughter thinks I am totally nuts for doing that. I've done it about 4 times already. But then again, being 15 she thinks us elders are insane for any number of reasons!

I have the F-2 also, in about the same shape the one pictured above. I also have one of the larger ones, which is in much better shape. I guess the good thing is that no one would steal it, since how could something so ugly contain anything of value?

All in all, I realy like the Domke bags.

Rover, if you have your new bag by Wed/Thur, I can bring a couple Domke inserts. You can then see how they might fit before ordering any. Just a thought.

Just a thought on camera bag inserts for a DIY project. The thin blue camping foam that goes under a sleeping bag can be cut and hot glued together to form a custom insert . You could probably do several inserts from one roll of it. Just a thought though.

have'nt done the hot glue thing but i have used that camping foam for added protection. works great on the bottom of bags.

And I do have a bed roll... It will be a few years before Sammy is old enough to go backpacking, and I will have to buy him gear at that time, it would just add one more thing to the needs list... hmmm...

Good idea Steve, thank you for the offer. It is hard to see these things before you buy them because there aren't many local retailers who stock this stuff.

I'll try to remember to bring some with me.

Is your signature suggesting you got a Holga? Are you going to bring that to Mystic?

but i am jealous.
at times it would be nice to have another shooter out there with me.
otherwise most times i'm quite content to be on my own.

Some of the best inexpensive bags are diaper bags -- waterproof -- after all, if they won't let the liquid out, they won't let it in either. And no one wants to steal a diaper bag.

I think Rover used to have one... Or at least that's what I remember.

Bags... they are insidious to sneak into your life. I had none, and no need until I got the first. Then got into rangefinders and got one, and then another... The last one is a small Domke FX5B: smallish, not padded but tough enough for a body with lens, an additional lens and my flash (yep, I use flash for fill sometimes).

Good job, Rover!

Yes the diaper bag...I am just working on extentions of that wonderful invention. Actually, I just use my son as an excuse now and stuff more of my stuff in whatever bag I take with us.

True story, important for men, my wife went out an bought our first diaper bag. A cute thing, made me feel, well, you know when I carried it. Thankfully, for the rediculous price she paid for it, it fell apart pretty quickly. I immediately went on the hunt looking for something more "appropriate." If in need, go look at Lands End, nice stuff, well built and just bag looking, not cute.

also try those bigger lunch bags. they kinda look like diaper bags (going on very old memories here). they insulate and keep dry also. i keep one in the trunk of my car in the summer and throw whatever i'm using into it.

and for me, my used domke bag might be here as early as monday. faded black...

I'll second that vote for the lunch bag. I've got one that I don't think anybody would ever think of stealing. Of course it says "Igloo" on it rather than "Leica", or "Canon". It's dirty, worn, and has a few mustard stains. It's also water resistant and well padded.

I am a pretty darn good cook. My friends often want to steal my lunches. :)

that could pose a problem.
maybe the diaper bag is a better idea for you then.
