Hello,
can anyone tell me what the cap size is for my summitar 50/2 LTM?
I ordered a 39 mm from b&h and... :bang: too small, i did it without thinking, i admit it. I have the original cap, but it keeps sliding off.
Help!
thanks

Replace the velvet in the original cap. Crafts store, get velvet ribbon in the right color. Cut to width and length, remove old, glue in new with Pliobond.
There is a unique size cap for the Summitar, good Leica places know it, it can cost $20 and up.

If your original cap has the felt inside, fill the cap with warm water. After letting it sit for a few minutes, dump the water and then let the cap sit until it's dry. When the felt is completely dry, carefully fit the cap over the lens so as not to dislodge the felt. Wetting the felt (is it called felt?) liner causes it to expand as it dries. This only seems to work on Leica lens caps. I've tried the technique on Canon caps to no avail.

The cap on the right is for the Summitar. It's diameter and depth is slightly smaller than the cap on the left. The one on the left fits most Leica lenses from the Classic Period (just made that up!) that take an A42 size cap. The Summitar cap diameter is about 0.5mm smaller and won't quite slide onto the other lenses.

thanks for the tips!! I will first try the soak method, if that fails, i'm off to the fabric store.
:)
The outside diameter of the Summitar is 41.7mm. It is hard to guess exactly how generic caps will fit, so you may have to look at 42 & 43mm. I have another lens that measures 42mm, and had to add some felt to the inner rim to make a 43mm cap stay in place. However, most of the vendors say to add 1mm to the measurement when ordering.
Pssssssssst................. hey Buddy! Wanna CHEAP lens cap for that Summitar? :D
I, too, was in need of a couple of caps for a Summitar and a Canon Serenar that looks for all the world like a Summitar copy. I found that an FSU J-8 lens cap that's smooth inside (some have ridges) will fit perfectly when a ring of 1mm felt is placed around the inside lip. Not only does Jon Goodman's seal kit have 1mm felt but it's also self-adhesive. Works like a champ!!
Alex-Photo sells the plastic caps for $1.25 each with shipping cost at $7 for up to 20 caps.
Anyone who thinks using FSU caps on Leica lenses is the act of a heathen can go pay $20 or more for a cap. Not me. Caps are too easily lost.

the cap from the I61 LD works to with a strip of black tape inside the edge.

Do they make a UV filter for the summitar?
Do they make a UV filter for the summitar?
They made them. The trick is finding one. The Summitar requires a special mount and was not the best idea Leitz ever had.

Yes they made a UV. Mine seems to effect sharpness more than UV `s on other lenses.
Cap size is 41mm. B&H sells a generic plastic one. Nice for field use so you don`t loose the good one which costs a bit more to replace.
Buy a shade for it.
Ronald is correct: the cap's internal diameter is 41mm. A 42mm cap can be made to fit, as others have suggested. Filters have an unusual tapered thread. Series VI may be your best bet -- but then you'd have to do something about a hood as well, without which a Summitar should not be used. Not a coincidence that Leitz made the enormous SOOPD for what is really quite a compact lens.
