The rumor mill says that in his early career, HCB used an accessory finder which displayed the image upside-down. Allegedly, this helped him with composition.

Are you familiar with such a finder?

VIDOM

Universal finder, 35-135, pre war. Showed the image reversed left to right. Eyepiece could be rotated to allow for portrait shots, but that also meant that by using the portrait setting in landscape mode the image was upside down as well as laterly reversed.

Nice finder, actually. Better built than the post war VIOOH (the VIOOH is the one that if made by Leitz New York is known as an Imarect)

<shrug> sad, I knew all that, didn't have to look any of it up. I think I'm turning into a Leica tragic.

Anyway, looking at things right way up and right way round is overrated (says he with a Linhof) :D

Ummmmm, no Nicolas, I for one don't have that kind of problem, but then I'm currently on a machine running Mr Gates' finest........... (not necessarily a good thing) ;)

Yes a VIDOM, I have a really bashed up black one but it works just fine. Artists do use the technique because it is supposed to force you to look at the scene just in terms of the graphic shapes. Sort of like being in Australia... ;)

NicolasD, that's a beautiful VIDOM. I have the chrome version and the view is crystal clear. The VIDOM also has a setting for 10.5cm which the Imarect doesn't have.

Still, it's the Imarect that graces my Leicas when I'm taking pictures. What I'd like to find is a reasonably priced 2.8cm attachment for it.
