View Full Version : Darned Gallery timeout issues
Earlier today I uploaded 3 images of the 5 I'm allowed.
However, when I tried to upload more, the server said I had exceeded my limit.
IMO, this needs some work Jorge
I had similar problem last night. And even worse the night before that!
Gallery seems to have a mind of its own.
I've learned not to criticize it ... and by you doing so will only mean that I'll have to duplex the doghouse I've been sent to for having done the same two nights ago. :bang:
and just after i post that message, it finally lets me upload the next 2 images: i hate it when that happens!

no doghouse george, that's not fair.
and it's not WHAT you but HOW you said it.
and if you want it to go away then stop bringing it up.
you play nice -i play nice - we play nice...
besides, i rarely stay pissed off at anyone for long;)

honest, it's not a plot or anything :)
i have no illusion as to understanding the software involved.
a couple of days ago i started to move some pics into albums and wound up making one of my pics into the photo used for the members gallery index.
i have no friggin' idea how i did that and no idea how to get rid of it. been working on it on & off all day.
joe
In reality - the Gallery software seems "possessed"!
Three nights ago, apparently during part of the "server transition", I attempted to upload 5 pics. Each had a file name.
After seeming to upload okay I got the error message that led to the "thread issues".
Then on Friday afternoon (US EST) the site went down for a couple of hours and migrated to a different server.
Afterward last night (Friday US EST) I was able to upload the five pics (but the Gallery 'refused' to let me substitute one of them from the failed upload from the night before - it was like it had a "memory" or something!).
I could only upload the five "originals" from the night before - and not swap out one of them (all the while understanding I knew I could only upload a total of five pics). So I did what I was told!
[BTW: tonight I did upload the one I had wanted to use as a "substitute"].
Weird....
But desmo, from all they crap I got I've learned that the Gallery is not considered to be a major purpose of the RFF site - so we who think it is just have to live with what we get....
Now I'll go look at your latest uploads.

Not necessarily, IME or even common. HOWEVER, there is a very real difference in the answers a given ID gets based on _how_ the questions were asked in the first place. It's not what you might wish to hear, but even as I enjoy the contributions from both you and a certain "Bill"... well, he will have harsher answers that get talked about while you have harsher questions that never get answererd...
Now would the two of you _both_ get a f*cking life where the other is concerned? I really don't give a rat's ass about your points of argument. THEY ARE IRRELEVANT!!! Both of you need to ficking deal with that simple reality.
joe, I am sorry and will fully understand if this gets locked or deleted. But I am so damned tired of two very good contributers being so goddamned childish...

Joe,
I don't have any axe to grind with you but I don't know what to say. I certainly do not think I "earned" the wrath I encountered the other night. And it's clear that there is an "amen chorus" that will always be there for you so I am thus exiled to the dog house.
Add to that the BM thread last night with the crack about 1/4 racers (for whatever that means) which was obviously provocative.
I will say that we had a peaceful few weeks here - w/o any FID crap etc. and now, once again, all hell is breaking loose. And guess who's back!
For what it's worth - the Gallery is the most important part of RFF for me. And so, yes, I get frustrated when I have problems uploading to it when I am doing all the "right" things.
Apparently so does "desmo" and maybe others too.

well, i'm pleased there is no axe to grind, i also have no sharp objects on me.
i do enjoy the support of many here and i hope that i have earned it, but it was by no means unamimous and some of it was said in private.
as to bill, well, he, much like you, is a character with very strong opinions and passions.
i think in the long run we are all the better for it.
peace in the valley will return, i have no doubt. but you two seem to enjoy the personality conflict. i say that because i honestly believe that you could both easily ignore each other otherwise.
i do not down play the importance of the gallery for many here. obviously i upload my pics here also. the frustration levels can run high when machine pounces on man. this afternoon i sent rob the same email 3 times because my friggin computer kept freezing on me and i kept hitting the enter button. very frustrating indeed.
i am powerless with most software...
as to what to say...be honest, sincere and respectful and you will always have my ear.
if i have treated you in a disrespectful manner then i sincerely apologize.
my sicilian roots are close to the surface.
in time i hope we can be friends and enjoy a deli lunch together and maybe a walkabout the next time i visit home.
joe
Joe,
Thank you.
I do hope that come the warm weather you will come back home for a visit and we can share a shoot and a deli sandwhich (however, while I can have the pastrami, you're going to be "restricted" to the turkey with NO mayo - at least if I have anything to say about it! ;) )
In all honesty, I do not like being painted with the same broad brush as Bill. For one, I am never so "obsessed" with my rightness that I am unwilling to admit when I am wrong. Some while ago I was very wrong about something I said to RML and was rightly "called" about it. I "fessed" up and apologized publicly here - something I do not ever think BM would be capable of doing.
Add to that the return of these darned FID threads - why?
Last I checked, there is still only one digital RF on the market (the Epson RD-1) and any quick read of the threads here will tell you it has QC problems. Would you spend three grand for it?
Yes, I know the Leica-philes are all waiting for the digital M - but its beginning to seem like waiting for Godot!
So that means that just about every RFF shooter is using film. Yet we continue to get ourselves in a dither about FID, particularly whenever BM is active here.
Maybe it's good that the darned Gallery is so "difficult" to deal with because that means if you do "figure" it out and upload pics to it - then you really are a "picture shooter" and not just a "bs shooter"! :D

The reason I don't use the gallery much is different from most people. I like to have my photos uploaded in *one* place. I can better keep track of where they're being posted that way. That said, I *love* looking at the gallery images. In fact, it's what first led me to this site. I was looking for a site that would allow me to show both my creative/experimental and my gear loving sides...and, for the most part, I found that here.
I think that the gallery is a vital part of the site...it gives people who have no web space a chance to show their work somewhere. For those who have space and want to use it anyway, it gives an alternate place to store your photography and a slightly easier venue for showing it off here.
I think, personally, whether you use the gallery or not, as long as you keep shooting and showing what you're doing it doesn't matter one way the other.
I think the fact that we can have disagreements, sometimes heated ones, and still come back and be amiable towards each other is one of the best things about this place. It sets it apart from a lot of other places where people are more petty and just completely stop talking to each other because of petty misunderstanding or because they don't see eye to eye. I applaud both Joe and George for their civility in this...and they should be roll models for everyone.
And that's all I have to say. :p
Thanks Stephanie,
I'm not as adept as you in setting up blogs etc. so "need" the Gallery in order to show my pics.
I guess that's why it's so important to me.
Now if only someone could explain to me how I post a link in my signature here that says "My Gallery"!

Add the gallery link in URL BBCode tags to your signature.
<url=http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showgallery.php?ppuser=2719&cat=500>My Gallery</url>
Replace < with [ and > with ] and you're all set. ;)

George- the gallery has had issues off and on. In the past year (Ijoined about a year ago) I have found it's better to take note of whatis happening and sending a PM or email to Jorge or joe about what youexperienced. It gets looked into and eventually resolved as best aspossible, given that Jorge has a life and a job.
Both Joe and Jorge do what they can, when they can on our behalf. Thatis why they get such decent support from the community at RFF.
On the differences of opinion that people experience here. I hold thedistinction of having been a lightning rod for Bill Mattock, RogerHicks (who seemed gentile at first) and you. I have learned that Billenjoys playing devil's advocate. I don't have a problem with that. I dothink it's a problem when a member hurls vitriolic attack at anothermember when they have misunderstood or disagreed with a members post.
I might have disagreed with Bill. But I never felt any disagreement with him was personal.
My experience with you however is quite different. I have watched youbait others here. And, I was very surprised at your completemisinterpreation of my post regarding my experience in a shop whilecarrying a camera. You went on the attack.
So I find myself just a bit astounded that you are considered aproblem. It's very clear to me that you have a lot of fun tearing intosomeone.
So - if you are hearing an "amen" chorus, stop and look back at thethings you have said and done here. Then take the time to consider ifyou would like to have been on the other side of it.
Later- Bob H

Bob,
Your points are noted.
Actually, right now, other than being up way too late in the wee hours - my RFF problem is still figuring out how to put the "My Gallery" link under my signature!
Stephanie has been helping me out but I seem to be hope/helpless about doing this!
Sorry if I offended you about carrying a camera into a store and objecting to being "challenged" by the proprietors thereof about taking pictures therein. But, after all, it is their private property - isn't it?
G'night,
Stephanie Brim

I'd try and do more for you...but I can't. Unless...heh. Hold for some magic. :P
Oh, and Bob, one other thing.
Bill threatened me here with physical harm.
I'm a 55 y.o. little fat guy.
Last thing I need is to have some character here "call me out" for a fistfight!
Okay, the guy scares the hell out of me. Particularly now that he claims he's going to hop on a train and come to NYC. Does that sound like a rational being?
I'm very concerned for my well-being.

Go there. Copy and paste the first line into your signature. It should work.
If this doesn't work I will really consider you hopeless. :D

George - You verbal assault wasn't about their property it was about your believing I was there to take pictures.
My objections were that the owners thought for some reason that theirshop was threatened by my camera. Mind you it was "cop shop"filled with cops. No threat from me.
You misread and you mispoke.
And yes, It was offensive.

Um. I have a suggestion.
Instead of talking this out on the forum, why don't you do it in a PM. Sounds like something private between the two of you.
And things were going so well in this thread.

From a web developers perspective:
Disclaimer: I have not developed in PHP since version 1.3 and I do not know exactly what version this forum is using.
The Forum software seems to be a LAMP product (Linux, Apache, MySQL PHP) or hybrid. It uses javascript and CSS to provide the display details and PHP to provide the page templates and backend database connectivity. Two of these components CSS and Javascript are rendered very differently in different browsers. This will cause anomalous page rendering and session messaging back to the template engine and session manager.
A site such as this is a very complex programming task to begin with. I doubt that Jorge is the author of the software, he can only make modifications that are documented.
In other words, running a site with this kind of traffic (not to mention the spiders, robots and hackers) takes time and effort. It is what it is, a good free site run by an enthusiast, If you want Flickr (A great piece of software: WSDL web service using SOA on a Java application server) use Flickr.

Sorry guys- I feel reponsible. My last rant got caught during a server hiccup last night.
Sometimes I find it very difficult to stand by and bite my tongue.
Well - there's been some people expressing strong points of view. I'll just speak for me:
I like it here:
* It's friendly
* Funny
* A lot of the stuff in the gallery is first class - some of you lot should be famous!
The gallery is my main reason for being a member but I like it that people talk about their gear too. In fact it's the combination that's special - passionate about photography and enjoying the toys too. If RFF served London Pride or Guiness, it would be fairly close to heaven.
Perhaps that's the problem, I use Firefox and Mozilla and avoid Macroshaft products like the plague they are.
Yes, I greatly appreciate what JT has given us with this web site but that doesn't mean I don't get really frustrated sometimes.

As suggested, it may be best to direct PM's to Jorge with the technical difficulties one is having with aspects of this site, or if anyone is going to post publically in a thread, to do so in a respectful or at least neutral manner, rather than in a complaining, angry tone, which is the way it was presented the other night.

If RFF served London Pride or Guiness, it would be fairly close to heaven.
Now there's the idea that I have been waiting to hear. The RFF bar. We could serve 1000 different shades of beer and no wine :-)
And the best coffee in town.
But no new-wave disco-techno-splice&dice music.
Hip cats could come in and wax about their Leicas or FEDs or whatever. Open mike on Friday night.
Spoken word with drunken drink. Lose your imbihibitions, show ALL of your lenses.
Oh, BTW, 1 week to go to the Commonwealth games and we're having nightly knife fights here in Melbourne.
Thanks,
