This is a very nice Leica II... a rare "export" model with the special "Germany" engraving in the accessory shoe.

This 1939 beauty is the IIIb with period rapid-winder SCNOO, both in fabulous working condition. Attached is a Red-Scale Elmar and external 50mm VF SBOOI, both post-war. The latter fits only partially in the accessory shoe, which I believe is a known problem (changes to the Leica shoe standard): anyone know more?

Thanks Tom, it doesn't make me any less jealous of your collection though ;)

All the WW2 paperwork arrived the same week as the camera. I don't have any studio lighting to make it look better unfortunately.

I've got a SBOOI on the camera now, looks really sweet and I'm still busy running a roll through it to see if it works the way it should.

I bought it a week ago - the lens is in great condition indeed and as far as I feel the camera all works great. Will process the first test roll tomorrow. I presume it is a IIIa by the serial number but could be IIIf as you suggesting :)
This is my first leica. May be you guys will help me to identify the model better? Here's two more shots in case somebody can help :)

Yes originally a 1935 III, factory converted to IIIf in the ?1950s (flash syncronised). Note the engraving DBP & GMBH, these are post Third Reich. In 1935 the engraving would have been DRP. Leitz offered upgrades to their older models and many were brought up to the then current specifications. It shows the quality of the construction of these old cameras.

Send it to your favourite repairman and have the IIIc lugs fitted, if you must. Alternatively, find a donor shell from a later camera - I had a late production II that had blanking screws, fitted by the factory, where the III shell they used should have had lugs.

On the left is a Zorki 1b (1949 to 1951) that had it's broken rangefinder removed. I just picked up the 1935 Leica Standard on the right. I was going to send it off to Youxin Ye but he's in China. The shutter looked and sound good so I put some film in it so see what it will do until Youxin returns. What delightful cameras! Hi There,

It's been a while That I am watching these forums, but here is the firts time I am "posting" something. An I am posting it here, where I find it nice to read a lot about LTM leicas.

Here is what I have, in terms of LTM Leica :

A Leica IIIc (sharksin) with its Sumitar ;
A Leica IIIg with its Summicron 35/2

In my bag, I have also a VC 15/4.5, and a Nikkor 50/1.4 Both are great lenses, even if I find the Nikkor a bit heavy. In fact, I often leave it at home, using it mainly for "indoor pictures".

I Really love my IIIc : it is just as heavy as I need, and the shutter is ultra quiet. I really like my IIIg, even if it is "noisier" than the IIIc, bevause in fact, you can perfectly take pictures from 35mm through 90mm in a small/light package. But it does feel less sturdy than the Leica IIIc.

I Think I will want a third Leica III sooner or later : I want a set for "indoor situations" (with the nikkor), a set with the VC 15/4.5, and a set with the IIIg and a 28/35 mini-finder for all around versatility outside.

Everything I have, I got it cheap, and if like a lot photography, I am not a "specialist". I will post picts of what I take as soon as I get the time to scan what I see where I go. I also have a Nikon FA and a Nikon FM3a with various lenses from Ais 20/4 ; 28/2.8 ; 50/1.8 ; 85/2, but I have to admit that I am using them less often now that I have my Leicas and a New Mamiya 6 (50mm being very impressive).

Ah, and I am thinking of buying a VC Color Skopar 28/3.5 !

Here's my Summar clone, a FED 50/2.0 on a FED-S Komandirski from 1941:

http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=82766&stc=1&d=1290217797

I shot it against a 'real' Summar once on the M8 when I still had that: not a difference. Even color rendering was identical.
The camera probably was defaced and rechromed, ready to be engraved as a 'Leica', when they saw it was a FED-S. So now the top plate is blank. FED camera type development narrows it down to 1941.

That camera deserves some quality time with me. I should take it out more. I got some rolls of Neopan 400 that would do nicely with it!

Here's my latest acqisition: Leica IIIf with Nippon Kogaku 35/3.5 lens. A beautiful thing, but I may have to sell it as it's hard to justify the expense these days. Already have an M6 and R-D1, and the IIIf's viewfinder doesn't really compete with those. But first a roll of film must be run through it. Then we'll see if I fall in love with it.

I'm not sure of the size (E19?), but the Walz filters for the Argus C3 are often used. They're inexpensive and available, but very old (50's). The original Leica as above are from the '30s, I believe, and harder to find.

A SOOGZ will adapt regular E39 filters. A VOOLA/SOOGZ combination is Leica OCD perfection.

Which one (of the cams) is your favorite?

To fondle: the IIIa, to shoot: the IIIg

I shoot the IIIg mostly with the 2.8 Summaron. I haven't checked the latest IIIf yet, the one shown above, but it looks and feels like it is in excellent shape. The IIIa slow speeds stick.

"Anyone For Tennis.....Soccer, Football or Auto Racing?"
(Leica IIIC K MOOLY C - Sports Rig)

Santa helped me put this rig together this year.............based on some camera gear an old German man once told me about years ago, he was a Nürnberger Nachrichten Sports Photographer in the late 1940's early 50's, shooting the hometown Soccer team and Motorcycle races, he had a postwar "Flat Top" IIIC with a Black MOOLY C motor and ROSOL finder and he used the kit for many years and sadly had sold it BEFORE I met him.
(I did buy all of his Leica Fotografie magazines complete from 1949 to 1966).

My Sports rig is my 1945/48 Leica IIIC K "Sharkskin" conversion LOOKX with era correct f2/50 Summitar SOORE w/ SOOPD wartime issue "Barndoor" hood, ROSOL finder and 1948 Black paint MOOLY C Leica Motor #5481 as delivered originally on May 7th 1948 to a Photo Studio in Munich, Germany.

This is something completely different and will be a major feature camera in my up-coming online camera museum. :D

Thanks Santa!

Enjoy!

I saw that over there at the LUF and I would honestly step out and say that, that camera is NOT a factory 1948/49 era Black Paint, (it is an original factory conversion IIIC/IIIFBDST) , but the finish is not smooth or shiny enough as the Leitz factory paint was Nitro Lack and it looks like wet black glass, (this camera looks like a CRR Luton Paint job) ~ plus like the IIIC K's of WW2 the body screws were painted to match the body, this is a non factory paintjob - a beauty nontheless......... :)

This camera here is most likely to be an original Black Paint IIIC ca. 1948 - the paint is also the same stuff used on the 1948/50 era MOOLY C motors.

I agree Tom, it's quite probably a non factory paint, but the conversion being an original Leitz one. About the picture you have shown, I am almost quite sure the owner of that camera (Erik our fellow member) mentioned that it was painted black at a later stage, but of course Erik might help us out on this one (there is only one original black IIIc known and I doubt it is in his hands)

I still have doubts on this one, altough Ton Scherpenborg (Leica repairman - Leitz trained - since 1958) declared that it is genuine. He opened it for small repairs.
Ton Scherpenborg also remembered that in the past there were at ODIN similar cameras around that were given to customers who had their cameras in repair, so called 'loan cameras', and that these were not marked as such.
I myself doubt on this one because the paint is not strong enough.

Erik.

Another upgrade for the IIIf, a SCNOO. Post-war IIIf, but Youxin figured that he could get the SCNOO to work on it. It took a little surgery, a new take-up shaft, grinding the gear beneath the winding knob thinner, and a few other alterations, but after all was said and done, I have a 1953 IIIf with a SCNOO, and it works beautifully.

I hated to see it go, but loved selling it to you! Enjoy!

Very nice, looking at the shutterspeed knob, I wonder whether yours is a leica factory conversion - in other words does it have a flash sync?

Hi everyone, greeting to you all since I am new here. Just a shot of my LTM with its lens I wanna share and it's still on its first roll. So far I like it even the shutter is pretty smooth. I was just wondering if trimming the film is really necessary (I trimmed my first roll), but I have read from leica magazine that using business/plastic card make it possible to load film without trimming. Has anyone done this? Thank you. :)

That's a nice setup Beta Photography.
Yes there are a few methods to load a Barnack without trimming the film.
It can be done by inserting a thin card and sliding the film behind it or by removing the lens and opening the shutter with the Z-setting and guiding the film past the top edge of the film plane.
Trimming is pretty easy though.

Johan, I'm not used to using the SCNOO quite yet, I caught myself advancing the film with the advance knob a few time with the test roll. Sync-socket works fine too. Should have some results later today or tomorrow.

Thank you Mr. Fibble, yes it's true trimming is not hard at all, but sometimes if I trim my film before using it, then I can't use it for my other M leica? well, I never try to use trimmed film on M leica...:D Anyway, I guess I have to try it to use the thin plastic card to know if it's oke or not :) I hope nothing bad happens like jammed shutter :(

It's a FACTORY REBUILD/REPLACEMENT top plate camera, note the (Nr.) instead of No. on regular cameras, all replacement cameras had the Nr. engravings.

Hello Nils,

Yes, it's like you have a brand new 1942 Leica, at least it was a FACTORY REBUILD replacement top plate, done at the factory post 1954, (oddly enough they DIDN'T get the camera upgraded to a IIIFBD, they didn't spend any extra $$$) so it was 100% a damage issue that the factory corrected with a new top plate, which makes it somewhat uncommon too, what looks like a very nice uncoated Summitar is really one of Leica's facinating lenses and great to shoot with, I love them! :)

Happy Shooting!

The earliest shutter-speed dials of the I and the II had a larger diameter than the later ones. As the large dials can touch the finger during the exposure, Leitz decided to mount smaller ones.

Erik,

About your conversion shown above. Is it a 'I to II' or the mad 'II to II'?

I see that the housing is the higher type with the protruding accesory shoe.

Often wondered why they fitted these on cameras that were not to be syncronised (as in the 'f' series). I can only assume that either the factory had run out of the lower type or that all post war conversions have the same housing? Mine do, whether syncronised or not.

Judging by the finish on the shutter release this looks like a late conversion. I guess you have no idea of the date?

Michael

Erik van Straten
07-15-2011, 04:34
Hi Michael,

It is the same II that I have for quite some time now. It started life as a standard in 1936. The serial nr. is 185800. I like it because there is no synch.

I show the camera again just to show how nice my new black/chrome SCNOO is.

I share your opinion on the post-war housing.

This is the speed dial on my 1929 model I s/n 196** which has been converted to a II possibly before WW2 as suggested by the brassing. I note mine is smaller and has 1-20 for the slowest speed.

It occurs to me that this little lot should be in the conversions thread...can anyone move it?

The smaller 1-20 dial superseedes the earlier larger one.

The larger one is usually only seen on II cameras with the so called 'lavatory bowl' shape moudling beneath...and on old Is of course.

I think you will find that later IIs had the small dial direct from the factory since it was used in all production cameras by then.

I wouldn't hazard a guess at the date of your conversion without seeing more.

Hi Michael,

On second reading this observation is somewhat mysterious to me. What does the finish of the shutter release tell about the date of the conversion?

Erik.

Dralowid
07-15-2011, 13:05
Hi Erik,

Apologies if I appear mysterious, it was not my intention.

From the cameras that I have seen, the chrome finish on the latest, like a IIIg or late IIIf, is slightly 'frostier' and has a sharper grain than earlier cameras. Nothing to do with wear. The shutter release and rewind lever on your camera have this finish, it is a bit like an M. Also the shutter release collar and the button, although of course of the correct pattern (for the period), have a sharper outline or profile.

Erik, to be honest, I may be talking complete and absolute rubbish. But I sent a black III back to Leica in Mortimer Street in the 1960s when the button fell off. They replaced it free of charge with one exactly the same as that on your camera. I only recently changed it for something more appropriate.

As you know, many of the smaller components change subtly over the years as does the finish. Prewar chrome is different from wartime and early postwar chrome (which deteriorates). Later chrome has a slightly different grain, colour and finish.

I won't be upset if you or anyone else tells me that my observations are trash but I would be happy if someone agreed. I can't reallyoffer to illustrate the point since I have now sold off all my chrome cameras (apart from trusty M6) and no longer have examples to prove the point.

Best

Michael

Erik van Straten
07-15-2011, 15:07
Hi Michael,

No, your observations are no trash at all. I strongly agree with you about the chrome. It is a very interesting phenomenon.

It could be that my conversion is from the 1960s. I never found out when Leitz actually stopped with their conversion line. Must be at the same time when the IIIg went out of production, but I am not sure of that.

The only chrome cameras I have are an M3 and a IIIg. Wish I could afford to buy black examples of those.

All the best,

Erik.

Gordon, are you sure this is a 1935 camera? It looks like the knobs are all nickel and I always thought Leica replaced nickel with chrome around 1932/1933. I can't read the number well; if it's six figures starting with 17.. (as it looks like) it would indeed be a 1935 camera and it would mean that Leica continued making Leica I bodies in black/nickel years after they started using chrome for the Leica II and III models.

After many years of effortless searching, I finally became a Weisu. The Weisu is an optical viewfinder for the Leica when using a 35mm lens. It was introduced in 1933, but did not sell well. Most people choose for Visor or Vidom viewfinders, wich, however, produced laterally reversed images.
The Weisu resembles the VC Minifinder, but has the advantage of not being provided with the confusing double framelines (28 and 35mm).
What a beautiful piece the Weisu is.

Leitz did not make a leather cover for the Weisu, but delivered the finder in a cute linen-covered box.

The lettering is not executed in Woods Metal, but is finely engraved and filled with white paint.
The art-nouveau silhouette makes it the most elegant finder I know.

Congratulations! I am impressed. Having a VC Minifinder myself I can appreciate your Weisu.

In black/nickel they are truly rare, in chrome less so.

interesting information and nice finder. I have VIDOM, but as mentioned, it behaves somewhat illogically, if not used constantly and thus get used to.

Eric,

A very nice find. I have only ever seen one before and that was permanently attached to an early standardised camera, with a flip over mask for 50mm....or was that something different?

Michael,

I only know about early Standard models ("model C") with flip over masks for 135mm.

... a batch of Standard (Model E) fitted with the Weisu had already been produced serial nos. 165301- 165500 (200 cameras ...

This information is new to me. Thank you, Pan F. Do you know if any pictures of this camera exist?

Eric,
I do know that a Leica Standard (Model E) with the original fixed Weisu finder from this batch was auctioned within the last 2-3 years on Ebay.UK

This may have been where I saw it, but with my memory...

With the lettering down the side it looked odd attached to a 'I'. Not 'designed'. I assumed that it was some sort of modification and not done at the factory.

Interesting stuff.

Eric,
From memory I think that P.H.van Hasbroeck's tome "Leica: A History Illustrating Every Model and Accessory" has some information about this subject.

Yes, I found it, on page 209: "A small batch of black Leica Standards were equipped with black, permanently attached Weisus instead of 50mm viewfinders", but sadly there is no picture of those. Van Hasbroeck suggests that these cameras were a trial batch for the never commercially produced Snapshot Leica. (1935)

Thank you, Pan F, you have a good memory!

Very nice shots from that un coated Elmar 3.5cm Eric!

I'm going to take a look at a 3.5 Elmar this Friday and hope to make a purchase if its a nice one.

My I to IIIa sync conversion has come back from Malcolm Taylor and I would like to try one of these lenses on it!

Fingers crossed!

They're nice lenses, if not fogged. Uncoated lenses can be cleaned quite easily, when the repairman succeeds in opening them.
Is the one you're going to look at chrome or nickel?

Just love the way the uncoated Elmar render.

Its nickel, 1932 vintage I believe and apparently not fogged...!

Simon,

Great when it is not fogged. Must be the "thick cam" variation (infinity lock @ 11 o'clock).

Mine has number 144479, also from 1932, also thick cam.

This setup became my daily user in the last half year.
Usually I choose the Canon if documentation is the main aspect, the Tanar (a Sonnar-clone) for more experimental/funny things.

I know, nothing for Leica-purists... but works fine for me.
