John,

Was it Al that had a repair shop in the basement of his home on Harlem Ave ?

Steve

I am not sure of the street, I mostly saw Al at the shop or shows. I was at his house once, modest size, south burbs, and it still had the ramps from the time he took care of his son. I am pretty sure the shop was downstairs, I sat on the couch while he adjusted something for me. He used to stop in once a week to pick up repairs.

Al looked 60 when he was 85, I understand he is in failing health now, but I just missed him at the last show, so may see him Sept. 7 as I expect someone will bring him.

He started with correspondence courses in the 60's, and I was friends with Igor but had not realized at the time he had rebuilt a lot of cameras for Igor.

He sometimes could not get all the speeds adjusted, as he said, (I know some people disagree, but what do I really know) the camera was stored a long time with the shutter cocked and the spring was fatigued and he had to choose which speeds would be close, but you knew which ones to avoid.

There were some guys who would just soak the camera in benzene, get it clicking, and send it along.

Al's work generally held up, and if it did not he would re do it. Developed good sources and friends as well. He told me, but I have forgotten, who made his RF mirrors for him.

Almost all of my Leicas have been CLA'd and I am hoping the modern lubes are good enough to really last. A few Leicas have grown in to a rag tag collection.

When I started picking them up, I tried to avoid getting them serviced, later, I just assumed if they had not been recently serviced, they were headed to Al's.

Am not sure if his daughter is helping out, he spoke of moving to be near her, he looked good last time I saw him a year or so back, much younger than his years.

He used to shoot 8x10 at work, gave me a nice contact print of my H1a sporting the 35mm 2.3 lens he eventually talked me out of. Worked for GE or one of the big companies that used to HQ here.

Guys at the shows are beginning to look old, I just make sure there are no mirrors or photos of me. ;-)

Long post if it is the wrong Al. ;-)

Regards, John

1932, I may have left this one out. Has a nice matching RF in a drawer. Found it in Brno, there were quite a few shops there, this was Pavel's collector shop, as he has two shops in Brno. He would open the shop at all hours for out of town visitors. Funny how much Leica you can talk with someone who does not speak English. I had a terrific Brno girlfriend, she scouted the shops and then took me on a tour. She is in one of my photos, the one at Arromanches, not the one with the most views, but they know each other. ;-)

Here`s a shot of my 1946 "Crossover" bearing, stepped rewind platform Leica IIIC #397xxx with a "wartime" 90 Elmar lens with an adjustable FIKUS hood and 1945/46 *only*
Black Nose VIOOH viewfinder

Nice little set up, the "Black Nose" VIOOH is pretty uncommon and was issued only 1945/46 to be used on the postwar US Army issue cameras, the nose was black paint due to Chrome shortages, I only wish they had continued with the Black Nose cone, it looks better than the chrome one in my opinion ;)

Enjoy!

Mr Fibble,

What type of filter is that--the red one on the lens? I see that my 3.5cm lens has threads in the black ring around the lens. I'm thinking the 5cm Elmar has the same threads?

Nice looking cameras--lots of great looking cameras in this thread.

Yep, that's the set I've got. They're great on the Leica 35mm and 50mm Elmars. Better than the clamp-on/fall-off ones where you can't get to the aperature ring.

Just wondering if those filters are "new old stock" filters or modern copies? I have one similar 39mm set by Walz, only one yellow 18.5mm screw-in though. I am fairly certain walz is not in business anymore, nonetheless please do correct me if I am wrong.

I can't say for sure, but I'm thinking they are new old stock. I have some other Walz filters in 43mm size for Nikon 5cm lens. They are very nice quality and work great.

Somthing else to look out for is their lens hoods. Very well made--I'm always checking Walz stuff on ebay.

I bet a 50 Elmar would look pretty funny with a Waltz 18.5mm and a FISON shade!

Leitz made 18.5 filters, but they were discontinued in the mid 1930`s

Tom

Laforet

I have a Photax FISON copy and I will try to take a photo later today. But I must say that have not used this combination myself since with the filter in place the aperture control is practically inaccessible, well unless there is a VOOLA inside the FISON to help.

Using 18.5mm filters with VALOO is a much better idea, since A36 filters will have to go to the front of the hood and cancels any benefit the hood might have. Check it out here
http://silfver.blogspot.com/2006/09/firhe-good-things-come-in-small.html
I have a VALOO that is so beaten that I am ashamed to let anyone know that I have it, still looking for a SOOGZ to use my arsenal of 39mm filters with it....

P.S. The Walz filters have thick frames that tends to nag onto the aperture control, Leica filters does not seem to have the limitation as their mount is on the slim side.

Hehehehe, Yes I wanted that "Black Nose" for a while now, I got it though a friendly deal with a shop here in Florida, I don`t use VIOOH`s much at all, I just collect them and these are pretty interesting, while they are
*2 year only* issue ones

I'm not familiar with all the Leica accessories. What is that thingy on the lens? And I guess I might as well ask, where could I find more info for all the accessories and their ordering codes?

Cool pic--I like the 19mm filter and how they "look" on the lens.

Laforet
09-26-2008, 14:27
The thingy is a lens shade made to the shape of a Leica FISON by Photax, I think Photax's main area of interest is bakelite cameras.
For alphabetical order codes, this book have a complete list. However not very exciting to read since it has only minimal descriptions in words

Well, my 1943 Leica IIIC K Grey (May 1943) is back from cleaning and vulcanite repairs and she`s ready for her closeup......

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v477/koolgirliestuff/LeicaMontage0084NET.jpg?t=1222498630 (http://javascript<b></b>:void(0);)

Here together in it`s original "wartime" Black Summitar case, a period 1945 Agfa film tin and a 9th Armored Division Patch
(the solidier who once owned this camera was in the 9th and was one of the first US Army Photographers over the Rhine River Bridge at Remagen)

A camera that`s full of history and also very unique, one of only about 200 cameras that were ever made with a dark red ink "K" stamped on the shutter to denote the Ball Bearing shutter, or in German "Kugellager"

http://a554.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/118/l_806380ac6ec73050afa7ae2ae5e13631.jpg (http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=1028709&albumID=764919&imageID=28218586#a=764919&i=31991451)

This camera was torn down and inspected by Leo B. and also documented for the Leica Book research, now it will rest quietly here and due to the rarity of the shutter curtain
(LESS THAN 5 CAMERAS WITH THE DARK RED SHUTTER CURTAIN K HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO HAVE SURVIVED THE WAR, MAKING THIS ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL THE IIIC K VERSIONS)
I`ve decided this camera will NOT be used, but will remain a museum piece and pride of my small collection

Enjoy!

So the previous owner was an US army photographer who bought this camera for his own photography ? Was it originally a German Army camera (Kugellager equipped) ?

It was delivered in early May 1943 to Berlin, together with that Summitar and has no mention of Military service in the Leitz records, it was more than likely contracted to German industry or a ranking official in the Nazi Party, the GI acquired it shortly after going into Germany (either captured or bought off another solider, his brother was`nt sure and the original owners passed away for many years)
This Photographer used the camera for his work in the early 1950`s as a freelance Photographer for the Black Star agency, supposedly the leader of the British Church, The Bishop Of Westminster was photographed with this camera at Madison Square Garden and the photo used in Life magazine, I still must research this.......

I wish that some cameras could talk, this one would have a long interesting story to tell :)

Black camera is a factory postwar conversion from an earlier camera to a II with f style sync and slightly different top housing. It also has the extra pin at the bottom and postwar vulcanite. Looks nice.

It is missing the circular patch of vulcanite that goes into the blanking plate that covers the location where the slow speed dial was. This is not unusual.

Well,

Here are my two most recent additions ( does 3 months count as recent?).

Leica 1c from 1930 in the 566xx serial range, and a IIIc to IIIf BD conversion - yes, it's a "stepper", and the serial # is bang in the middle of the red-curtain range, but I think they were replaced when it was converted.

Both work very well, but I suspect the IIIf may have some film chips in the gearing somewhere - there is a certain lumpiness on the first wind from cold, and the vulcanite across the front of the body is in about 14 pieces of different sizes, but well stuck down.

Hi Furcafe.

Thats a nice (British Leica Copy) Reid III you have.
They are quality built and hold their secondhand prices better than the camera that they copy (Leica IIIb).

Hi Goodtimes,

Kevin at www.kevincameras.com usually has a couple of these Leica Code :-MBROO cases in stock but they are quite rare and quite expensive.

#3904xx K just arrived in the mail yesterday from California, and is now again on it`s way to Youxin Ye for a full overhaul, CLA and new Beamsplitter/ Curtains etc.
(The "K" curtain`s long gone....years ago!)

Another interesting series number (mid range #400 series) and one of the first Leica`s ever sold to the US Army, this one only 12 hours after the official surrender of the Germans to the Allies on May 8th 1945.

Will be back within two weeks, and will be one of the last cameras Youxin does for a while, he`ll be in China all of June, so I really am lucky to have caught the final repair appointment :D

Photos again after the CLA and samples from it`s first shooting as well....

Enjoy!

After a year of using FSU rangefinders and throughly enjoying myself I have decided to 'upgrade' and have had a very nice weekend playing with my 'new ' IIIg. I went for the g mainly for the excellent viewfinder and in practice it does indeed work very well with a 50. Currently my lenses are FSU , Jupiter 3 and Orion 15 but I am now looking for a CV Ultron 35 and 28-35 minifinder. My old FED 2 I will keep and continue to use as its a great camera even next to Leica but the Fed 3 has hit ebay. I umm'd and arrh'd about whether the expense would be worth it when a cheap FSU is still capable of taking great shots but now I have one and have used it in anger the difference is clear. Its down to old Ford versus Mercedes, the portable radio versus the HiFI its about ease of use and the feeling of quality. Its a pleasure to use and the faster shutter speed are a great bonus. hmmm money well spent I think.

Hi Erik,

Nice pictures of a very nice camera. Your lighting catches the patina very well. I find it amazing that these older cameras oftem have good vulcanite. This one is 5X,XXX? I see that you, like me suffer from missing release collars (We've discussed this before).

I've heard talk of a fim advance knob that is shallower or less tall than normal, do you have anything that would illustrate this?

Hi Michael,

The number of this one is 58734. I've made these pictures very simply with my euro 60 flatbedscanner. Yes, the vulcanite is in good condition, only a bit discolored. I recently found out that Leica I cameras did not have release collars. These were invented later, for model II Leicas.
This particular camera is interesting, because the lens is mounted on some sort of metal base and not on the vulcanite like earlier model I's.
Did you see the pictures of my Leica II post war conversion?
O, yes, the lower profile wind knob was installed on the earliest Leica I's.

Nice, I don't think people realise just how good a 'user' a I is...and it fits in your pocket. I'll post some pix of and from mine at some point.

Wish I still had one with the 'mushroom' release but I made the decision a few years ago to sell off anything with a serial number less than 10,000 in order to fund this Leica (and now Contax) habit.

Yes I saw your non sync postwar conversion. One of my favourites and the only example I have has been repainted by someone who obviously thought that it was the right thing to do..! I prefer the non sync postwar conversions to those that are sync'd. They are simpler/cleaner and I don't use flash on an LTM.

Like the idea of using a scanner for these pictures.

Erik,
Your Leica II looks very cool. I have a similar looking Standard Leica. The Leica serial numbers list at CameraQuest does not seem to be 100% accurate.
Based on it, my camera should be a Leica I.

I seem to have a Model E in which the 5cm finder has been replaced with a second accessory holder.
I could use a RF on one holder while using a VF on the other.

Well my friend, I got it around two years ago from a seller in Dubai around 500 USD, who was not totally honest on its mechanical conditions, as the shutter was sticky and the dials were all stiff, although its cosmetic condition is like brand new.

I sent it to Youxin Ye for a full CLA, I remember that he told me afterwards that my Leica IIIf RD ST is one of the rare Leicas he ever saw in like brand new condition ;-)

Do note that its serial number is: 697 686

And I've been offered 1200 USD by a collector because of its mint condition but also because of this particular serial number, I've been told that these numbers are considered to be very lucky numbers by the Chinese LOL ;-p

Some people might think that I've been silly not to sell it, but this camera is priceless to me...

Shane,

That`s a beautiful IIIf RDST, with the "late" engraving, but it`s still not the most coveted version of this type.......

For the IIIf nuts, the 1956 #824xxx series of the IIIf RDST are perhaps the rarest of the breed, as they also have some interesting features as a IIIg shutter etc.
(I have`nt seen one in over 10 years!).

I used a early 1955 one back in Germany for many many years, and it was also mint minus (they are truly hard to find in this condition) I sold mine to a Swiss collector for $1,000 (over 20 years ago) with a matching Red Scale Elmar....I really miss that camera, just like I miss my first LEICA a 1939 "matching numbers" IIIa with a very early Summitar! :)

Ohh I need one of those Voigtlander 50mm BL finders....anyone have one used to sell/trade?

Happy Shooting!

PS: Speaking of Youxin, he`s got my 1945 #3904xx K IIIc K Grey for adjustments, I`ll be shooting another pic of it for here when I get her back next week!

First, my apologies to Al Kaplan... sorry for the poor quality images, Al, it's just a crappy little P&S digital (it's all I have for "instant gratification :D).

My Dad gave me his Dad's camera four or five years ago; the vulcanite was damaged so last night I recovered it with this lizard skin. The braided leather strap was from my first "real" camera -- found it recently while going through old gear. I never used the strap, it's strong but a little too thin for a heavy SLR. It works well with this lighter camera and both bring back pleasant memories :)
