dear comrades!

I received today my 40.5mm vented hood (from 8boy seller heavystar), so I decided to take a few shots of my Kiev-2A with the hood and the helios finder. I'm all happy!

Hopefully I won't have any "finger shadows" on my negs .. doh!

cheers!
Max

Mmm.. should too pick a hood like that.

Is that Helios finder x1 mag., perchance?

darkkavenger

I've no idea about the mag. of the finder, it has 35, 85 and 135 lines, though they tend to fade a bit on various light situations. but it's nice nevertheless :)

If you can use the finder with both eyes open it's 1:1.

I don't have any troubles doing so :D It's a bit new to me, but yes I can use it with both eyes open :)

Sweet! ... Nice finder, looks like a better option than a turret finder, I'll have to keep an eye out for one :)

Thanks, Jocko and Laika! I posted above about a thread regarding those finders ;) I had a turret finder, but I gave it to my dad for use on his Zorki-6.. since we live about 2000km away from each other, I thought getting another finder would be the best solution ;)

"The Kievaholics strike back!"Is there some way of putting "Kievaholics" on my Ignore list? I'm constantly fighting KievGAS as it is and then some Max has to go post pics like this...

...schweeeet, Max... ya done good!

What kind of finder is yours?

Carlo.

You are not the only one to become Kiev alcoholic, I tried to resist to fight agains this submission but I must say my KIEV 4 is becoming my preferred camera to create pictures NOT to capture moments without thinking, this is for digital ..

Dear Friend,
I own both, and in my view, besides the compactness of the Helios, there is no comparizon at all. There is always a place and opportunity to use any photographic device, therefore I am confident that I will use the plastic Helios some day. But the Universal Turret Finder, originally designed by Zeiss and kept alive at production lines by the Soviets, is a hell of a finder:
a) 28~135 lenses
b) As bright as a modern SLR AF viewing
c) Parallax compensation without marks.
d) Within the cost/performance context, the Helios is expensive and the UTF cheap. The UTF is also cheap in absolute terms.

e) Finnally there is a concept among some RF users and manufacturers, never understood by me, that having alternate marks at the viewing window in the camera or the finder, in which as you go to longer lens you get a smaller piece-image - and all these is acceptable, or "obvious" or axiomatic. I do not accept this concept, nor I ever will pay big money for such a camera, regardless its glorious name.
The marks and shrinked image is less annoying with an accessory finder, protruding over the top of your camera, as you exchange compactness for convenience. But with the Helios you compromise lens quality as well - the image is rather poor.

But perhaps you have a different view and may want to express it.

Regards,
Ruben

Carlo, it's an Helios (Japan made) viewfinder. More about it can be found on this thread : http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16405

Aardvark Aallen : thanks :D I've been patiently gathering all these items for my little Kiev 2A :)

Ruben: I rather agree with your opinion on the viewfinder... the KMZ Turret finder is great... however my dad kind of jubilated when I brought it over with my Kiev for christmas, and, not content from having received a Pentacon Six with the 80mm biometar and the 180/2.8 Sonnar from me on xmas, he started seeking a KMZ finder on ebay, so I told him to get mine to put on top of his Zorki-6 ... :)

While I agree the soviet turret finders are very nice (I have used one) I find them a bit on the bulky side for general use. I also like having a finder that shows more than the given lens will capture, it allows me to see what is close to the frame edges and also shows anything about to move into/thru the frame. That being said I'm sure a finder that shows ~28mm to the edges with 35mm, 85mm, 135mm frame lines (the Helios) has to be crude to use with a 85/135 lens, here the turret will leave it for dead, also the turret has parallax adjustment that’s got to be handy using the longer lenses say for portraits. My interest in the Helios was because I mostly use 35mm and 50mm lenses and only very occasionally a 85mm (I'm yet to use/own a 135mm) a finder that gives ~28mm to the edges, 35mm frame lines, a minimal 50mm marker of some sort and 85mm frame lines (no 135mm) would be my ideal jack of all trades finder. Given that the Helios finder were being sold for £6 each on sale and is close to my ideal I thought it would be worth a look :)

You can't fight it. I had firmly told myself that I was going to stay with a single lens mount an only one mount. I broke my rule for the Kiev. Once you hear the shutter go thunk! at 125 you're hooked forever.

Just to add a little more Kiev spice to the thread here is a pic of my Kiev 4AM with a J12 I picked up for $14 on eb*y (The "Kievaholics" must have all been asleep that night :D ). Sadly this camera is a shelf queen till I can find or make a replacement spool. Now I'm single and should be moving into a house with another crazy FSU RF user soon I hope to get this tasty little camera back into action.

Oh speaking of the shutter sounds I just love the wheezy squelch of the Kiev slow speeds
