View Full Version : Time is running out
Just a reminder that when the contest comes to an end no more entries will be allowed. Get out there and take some pictures!
On the last eligible day for submission, will the site be able to handle the volume?
just remember that there is a limit of 5 uploads per day. if you wait for the last minute and have previously upladed images the same day you will be out of luck.

Are Alpa 12 images allowed? And what would you accept as "standard" lens for it?
Joe is right, the perfect light hasn't been seen around here often. :)

Jorge,
The rules posted here (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15985) state:
"No more than 3 entries may be submitted by each photographer."
The rules also state:
"All photographs must be taken with a rangefinder camera and a standard lens."
There are 5 entries that were all taken with a Nikon FM3.
Have the rules changed?

RJ,
I don't think there is anyway to stop someone from uploading an entry taken with a SLR or other non-eligible camera.
I presume that they will be "disqualified" after the contest closes. At least the poster of these ineligible photos identified them as such. Who knows how many others are being entered "silently"/
George
Well, since this is such a GRAND prize, I may require some sort of proof it was taken with a RF. Don't know how this could be done but I am thinking about it.
Yes, all non comforming entries WILL BE DELETED.

Maybe I've missed something, but the rules says that all pictures must be submitted no later March 31, 2006. We have still 2 months for submitting pictures. Why does Jorge warn us that the contest comes to an end?

Jorge,
What about the limit of 3 photos? If someone enters 5 photos are all 5 disqualified?
R.J.
A reasonable solution would be that the first, second and third pics are accepted, and all the rest by that person are rejected, even if # 5 was the strongest with the best chance of winning.
Looks like I'm stuffed for this one, only had a few days off in over a month and been ill for those. Even missed the UK RFF meet for the Chinese new year that would have been ideal (and a lot of fun).
Congratulations to whoever wins.
Maybe someone would post several and see which three get the most favorable response and then delete the others before the contest deadline? Who knows...
I'm stuck in the gray hell of the upper midwest US with JoeFriday and others begging for an open weekend, sunlight and reasonable temps. It's gotta happen eventually... right? Please? ;)

Fred,
You've still got two months. So get your paws on your RF and go shooting!

The contestant should pick their best 3, IMO. If they enter more than 3, they violate the rules:
"Any photograph deviating from the theme/rules will be disqualified."
Any entries after the first 3 should be disqualified, if more than 3 images are uploaded. :(

Well, kind of. I say everyone should pick their best 3 and only upload 3 images. Another strategy would be to upload as many as possible and delete all but 3 prior to 3/31/06. http://www.acuramdx.org/forums/images/smilies/soapbox.gif

I agree with RJ about only submitting 3 photos, I was jsut offering a way of dealing with more than 3 photos uploaded. The alternative more strict way would be to disqualify ALL of that photographer's pics.

Frank,
Actually, RJ made two conflicting comments. But his second one was the same as yours - pick the first three and toss out the "excess".
Regardless, I think it's a good idea and suggest you PM it to Jorge as a rule "refinement".
Because we can upload up to 5 pics per day to the regular Gallery it is entirely conceivable that someone might inadvertently do so to the Contest Gallery. That should be treated as an "honest mistake" and just result in the "culling" you suggest.

Jorge,
Wasn't there some rule about the pictures being taken with cameras and normal lenses bought after the contest start??? Damn good reason to buy a New camera! I could have sworn i saw that somewhere...
If there wasn't, don't worry about it. I needed to post something new in the C&C anyway.

Any rule violation will result in disqualification. 5 pics is a rule violation. If you need to put a different picture up delete an old uplaod and post a new one.
sorry for this...but i haven't really been following the thread as far as this contest is concerned due to my toxic schedule, and the oh so many replies, debates, etc., regarding this.
jorge, is the final 'contest rules' up on this site? where could i find it? really sorry about this, but i really would want to join.
thanks so much for your kind consideration. :)

I hate to say but this rule doesn't make sense in cyberspace, IMHO. I can register myself at RFF with 9 additional different names, can I? So, I can upload 30 images... Just because the prize is soo sweet... Seriously, I'm not going to do this. But is there any protection against such fraud? I doubt. Limited number of works make sense in classical photocontest when paper work supplied. Also fraud possible, but one has to find friends in crime (real people) and probably share the prize (sharing isn't that sweet, is it?) My question about size of prints (real prints on photopaper) resting quietly somewhere in between "what is normal lens" discussion.
Thank you.
ed1k,
You're absolutely right. But I think the organizers assume that we all are gentlemen/women, and we are indeed, aren't we?
For my part, I participate only for fun - my photos are too bad to let me hope to win - and I don't think the prize, as beautiful as it is, is the primary motives of any of us. I might be wrong, but this is the way I see this contest.
But of course, we are supposed to respect the rules, and RJ is right to point cheating out. No rule, no fun! You know, it reminds me of the playground: "you cheated"; "no you did"; "nope, you first" ...etc. We are not anymore in a schoolyard, so let's just respect the rules!
Thanks the organizers (Jorge), and thanks the photographers whose pictures are amazing.

Well, yes, but I think you can eventually be found out. And Marc, you have a point: there is that assumption (it's on my part, at least!)

I'll second that! Here in Seattle, we have had maybe 4-5 (probably 3 at most) non-rainy days since Christmas. Did have one nearly sunny day, actually, but I was doing homework all day.
Oh well, gray days are nice for soft lighting and it helps the meter out.
Does it means that I can upload 3 photos initialy and then change one or more of them later?
Yes, but any picture you upload can be used by the sponsor for 5 years.
Some photos seems to have rather different proportions than equivalent to 24x36 format. They must have been cut down from the original negative size and not composed in the camera (as the rules says you should do). Are those photos going to bee disqualyfied?

So far, all my new pics a near cr_p.
I'm waiting for an overcast day. It's been too sunny here lately. I think I'll wait until the last minute and try to snipe the prize. Who are the judges? R.J.Darn sun ruins everything. LOL! :D
I decided not to enter. I'm just going to polish on my cameras and hang out here and complain about the rules. That's so much easier than trying to load pesky film and do all that tedious focusing and stuff. Besides, Zorki wind knobs hurt my fingers.
Joke... c'mon, it's a joke. Hello? Acutally, I check out the Contest Gallery every day [or night.] I've got a feeling the servers are gonna get overloaded about the last 48 hrs of this thing. My wife is getting tired of me dragging a camera every time we go out the door, but my schedule is killin' my shooting time - gotta watch for opportunities on the go. arghhh. One bang ~ :bang:
But hopefully, even if they suck, I'm going to throw something in the ring. R.J., maybe if we pool our funds we can slip a little bribsky toward a judge or two, eh?

I haven't checked the gallery yet. I really don't want to until I upload my photos because I don't want to accidently shoot something someone has already done. I'm in Iowa and I have far less choices as to what to shoot for this theme, but I want to be sure that whatever I do shoot isn't because of influence of everyone else. :)
"...but I want to be sure that whatever I do shoot isn't because of influence of everyone else. :)"Oh, that ain't right... thanks a lot. Now I'm going to be hearing this little voice every time I frame a shot... "Has someone else already done this? Did I see this in the Gallery?"
I have been carrying my Bessa with a 50mm on it but haven't got anything close to meeting my idea of what the photo(s) should be. The one picture I've taken recently that works as "street" photography doesn't meet the rules.
I was close Saturday night after work: I was standing outside having a smoke and watched a drink college kid get arrested. And his buddy almost got taken in also. I did have the camera around my neck and thought about seeing if I could capture anything compelling but the whole scene was just sad. Not grandly tragic just stupid, bad behaviour induced by too much beer. And I suddenly felt like a voyeur. Not fun.
So I finished my smoke and went back to my own beer.
I'm thinking street photography isn't my thing. But there are several weeks to go so I keep toting the camera in hopes of seing something good.

Rob,
Don't "look" for the shot - although that's what I tried to do today. I have two in the "wallet" and both were "spontaneous" taken while I was LOOKING for THE SHOT.
Keep at it - I'm still doing so - and don't worry about 'wasting" a lot of shots - sometimes that's how to get "loose" and then the good one comes along with the flow!

George,
I figure the dumbest thing I could do would be to leave the camera at home so I'm not going to do that. And I have never worried about "wasting" film. I have all of 17 shots in my gallery and those were from a lot of frames shot. I am a very severe editor of my work and will not show anything to anyone if I don't think it's any good.
The thing that I didn't like was the feeling that I had of voyeurism: I'm not a reporter and I'm maybe going to use the picture to get more stuff. And if by some miraculous lack of judgement by the judges I were to win, the photo would then be used for promotional purposes. I'm not opposed to taking pictures that would work for the contest but the thing Saturday night wasn't somethng I wanted to imortalize or share. So I didn't shoot.
Not done with this by any means I'm just getting my head around what I think "street photography" is. Hopefully I'll come to a workable conclusion before this contest ends. If not, oh darn!, I'll have taken a few more photos of the world around me. I can live with that.

Rob, voyeurism is a function of photographer's mind. Just shoot openly, from the eye, and you may feel better about it.
