lens hood question

Canon Rangefinder lens hood S - 60

anyone know what this fits onto?

I have an S-50 that fits the 50/1.4 Canon so perhaps the S-60 fits the 50/1.2. It seems as though S=Standard, T=Telephoto and W=Wide when it comes to Canon rf hoods. Some of the later hoods also fit the early slr lenses of the same focal length.

Thanks for the welcome, Joe. I forgor that was my first post here. I also forgot to point out that the Canon hood size is indicated as 2mm larger than the filter thread size because they mostly clip on.

The Canon 1.2/50 has a 55mm filter, so I doubt the S-60 will fit. Stephen Gandy has a good overview of filter and hood sizes at http://www.cameraquest.com/crflen.htm
I remember the 50/1.2 has a hood with holes corresponding to the rangefinder window...
I think it will fit some of the Canon_FL (SLR) lenses of the 60's, maybe the 58/1.2

gandy's chart is wrong - according to canon museum site.
he has the 135/3.5 listed as 40 mm filter size - canon says it's 48.

who do we believe?
oh, wait a minute- my 135/3.5 takes a 48mm filter! :)
i wonder if the hood size (t 50) is correct or not?
i don't have one of them.

I think Sonnar is right-I didn't take the time to check the Canon Museum for more info before posting. Another good place to check is kevincameras site-they have Canon hoods at apallingly high prices but with useful pictures to look at. The T-50 will likely fit telephoto lenses with 48mm screw threads. As far as length of the hood goes, I've found most hoods to be too short. For example, I have often put the hood from an 85mm Nikkor on to a 55mm micro Nikkor without vignetting. I've also made hoods for uncommon lenses and rarely had problems with too much length.

i eventually found a 48mm rubber hood locally which i swapped with the metal canon hood i had on my old canonet, also fitting 48mm but with a set screw. it fits great and looks good too.
i will have to take some pics to see if it actually works or not.

I have a T60-2 which I use on my 1.8/85, but I believe it's for the 2.5/135. Gandy says a T60 should be right; but I didn't see one recently. I found no vignetting, but didn't use it with the hood wide open.

I've put those metal "Vivitar" lens hoods on all of my rangefinders. They work great. I then just use a cheap generic 52mm, or Kiron lens cap. They fit perfectly. No need to ever remove the hood, except when changing from 81-A to deep yellow filter, for B/W shooting.

i only use lens caps for storage in one of my camera cases, never when i'm out shooting. that's the first thing to get lost out there.

i like the rubber lens hoods ok. they offer some protection i.e. shock absorbtion and seem to keep the stray light out to boot.
the metal shades look better however.
the shade i had on the canonet is a metal canon shade made for the canonet series of cameras but it fits & looks great on the 135 lens too.

i need to buy a p&s digital so i can took quick snaps of stuff like this.

The rubber ones that I have seen for rangefinders, have been so wide, that they block the focusing patch and viewfinder. The metal one's I just leave on at all times.

Yes, a digital P&S has often crossed my mind for the exact same reason. Maybe a Nikon D70...

this particular shade does interfere a touch with the finder but i think the focussing is ok.
if i 'run into' a metal one i'll pick it up but i doubt i'll look too hard for now.

i know so little about p&s digital - i'll have to investigate all over again as i've forgotten what i learned about specific models and they have most likely changed anyway.

The 48mm is no problem. However, I had to get one of the Oly made 43.5mm hoods made exclusively for the Oly RC, by Olympus. Got it new @ $5.00 Consider the 48mm a done deal. The Oly 43.5, I'll keep on the lookout for.

I will be attending the camera show tomorrow morning. Did you want 48mm metal lens hood for your Canonet GIII QL-17? Is that size compatible with a few different Canon lenses?

yes, 48 fits not only the canonet but 2 of my ltm canon lenses also. i have an actual canonet hood that i'm using on the 135 right now.
so, bottom line, if you find 2 hoods in 48, one being good for a tele lens, i would appreciate you getting both. if not one would be great.
just let me know what the damage is and i'll send you a money order.
