Joe as a moderator does a ton of work here at RFF keeping it the kind of place we all appreciate coming to. As far as I know, he receives no compensation for what he does. Joe has indicated that he would like to win that Zeiss RF in the RFF contest. Here is my idea: if he happens not to win it in the contest, if 100 of us chipped in $20 each, we could buy him one as a show of appreciation. What do you think?

Here's the plan then:

Any RFF members who wish to show their appreciation for the excellent and uncompensated job that Back Alley Joe Rizzuto is doing for this RFF site, are invited to contribute to a group gift which will be presented to Joe. The gift is a Zeiss RF camera and a lens of Joe's choice (50, 35, or 28mm).

There are 3 ways to contribute to this gift.

1) You may send a PayPal payment to RFF member: Ray_g @ rgeneroso@gmail.com ,
2) you may make a credit card payment for an item named: Joe Rizzutos-RFF @ $5 each, listed on the RFF sponsor site: PopFlash.Photo, or
3) you may send a money order to PopFlash.Photo to pay for an item listed as: Joe Rizzutos-RFF @ $5 each.

A $20 donation is suggested.

OK the part number is "Joe Rizzutos-RFF" at:

http://popflash.com/item.cfm?id=%24...2N%5F0%20%20%0A

Thank you for your help, Tony Rose!

Frank, put me down for a contribution. Policing a BBS is no piece of cake and usually thankless. Joe does a great job and from what I've seen in the short time I've been here, does so with an even hand (no easy task). He deserves some thanks ... and a new camera to buy 35mm lenses for.

Gee you guys are smart. We'd have to look at selling prices in Canada vs US. I'm guessing they'd be much cheaper in the US, and we should buy from a RFF sponsor. Perhaps someone could carry the camera over the border (Trius?)

Not sure how a private gift/donation could be banned. Even if somebody does think its banned, I'll contribute.

Also, the $80 PayPal fee might be worth it to avoid the hassle factor. That's less than $1 per donation ... less than a money order.

Moving money costs money. 3 percent is worth it.

Tony Rose of PopFlash.Photo has stepped up and volunteered to help out. Since he also is the RFF contest sponsor, I think it would be best to go with him. Tony is suggesting that he display an item on the PopFlash,Photo website called Joe Rizzuto. Each one is priced at $5 and contibutors may buy as many Joe R's as they want ($20 suggestion) using their credit card. (PopFlash.Photo does not do PayPal.) Joe will then be able to access the amount contributed to make purchases of his choice at that site. Does anyone have any questions or suggestions about this proposal?

I'm in regardless but I favor the idea of a real gift and a set goal. Buying "Joe R's" is a lot like giving someone a gift certificate which is certainly better than no gift :D but usually does not convey the same impact as an actual gift. My feeling is we should set a goal for a particular camera and lens, raise the necessary money to buy it and present it as a real gift to Joe, not what in effect will be a gift certificate.

Wait, FrankG. Please read post #112. Could a few more members please tell me if they think that a credit card payment to a website is do-able for them?

I think you and Tony have come up with a great idea.

Was it Tony who thought up the name for the "item"?

He must be an old Yankees fan! :D

Let us know when Tony has listed the item on his website.

I do think it should be for a specific camera/lens kit (i.e. the Ikon).

Let's see how much we raise for it and then perhaps a few of us will be willing to buy a few more Rizzutos is we fall short.

Frank, count me in - I'm OK with plastic (actually prefer it!)....

As for "real gift" I think it's a good idea...

Ouch. I'll have to email Tony and see if I can mail a money order then as I have no plastic. Usually that doesn't bother me as it keeps me out of trouble...

We will take money orders.

CC no problem. I think you should stick with the original idea. If Joe's expressed a desire to own the Zeiss, then, how better could we reward his excellent service. Just get the Money to Tony by whatever means works and when there's enough in the pot just call a halt. If we are a little short you can count me in for some additional contribution.

Just waiting for the starting gun.

Credit Card/Debit Card is fine with me. I do agree with those folks that suggest an actual gift such as the original idea.

Kyle
01-15-2006, 15:54
I'm in regardless but I favor the idea of a real gift and a set goal. Buying "Joe R's" is a lot like giving someone a gift certificate which is certainly better than no gift :D but usually does not convey the same impact as an actual gift. My feeling is we should set a goal for a particular camera and lens, raise the necessary money to buy it and present it as a real gift to Joe, not what in effect will be a gift certificate.

I really think this is the best idea. Any payment method is fine by me, but CC/debit/PP is the best.

I too prefer the idea of a "real" gift.

FrankS
01-15-2006, 16:44
Thanks Nick, a separate web page is a good idea!

1) You may send a PayPal payment to RFF member: Ray_g @ rgeneroso@gmail.com ,
2) you may make a credit card payment for an item named: Joe Rizzuto @ $5 each, listed on the RFF sponsor site: PopFlash.Photo, or
3) you may send a money order to PopFlash.Photo to pay for an item listed as: Joe Rizzuto @ $5 each.

A $20 donation is suggested.

OK the part number is "Joe Rizzutos-RFF" at:

A couple more questions/suggestions: will our donated amounts be anonymous? I'm sure that many members will be willing to give more than the suggested amount but out of consideration for all our members perhaps the donations should be private. And, is this a gift from the RFF community as a whole? I would favor it being a gift from the entire community but would like to know the preferences of others -- thanks.

Oops, what if Joe wins the RFF contest?

Then he'll have two ZI's (plus all of his Canons) and will have to quit his job to have enough time to use them all. Not only that, he will have to spend all of his savings buying Chinese Lucky film imported by Bill M. (who will be the last film vendor on the planet).

Even worse, without his job, Joe will no longer be able to pay his rent/mortgage and become a homeless "street shooter" offering to take photos of men leaping over puddles for some spare change.

Ultimately, Joe will wander the streets of Edmonton mumbling to himself that those j-rks at RFF have ruined his life!

Cool - let's do it! :D

I agree on this. Some folks are able to purchase more Rizzutos than others. But we are a community and should present the present (wow - isn't the English language weird some times! :D ) as a community gift.

Picking up on RJ Bender's suggestion - perhaps just a "list" of contributing friends (not engraved on the lens, though - I hear it ruins the photos!) to accompany the gift?

funds on the way to ray_g. thanks frank, ray_g and all for getting this together.

another idea just came to me. maybe we could do a sort of "pass the camera"-type project... only we'd "pass joe's new camera before he gets it." we'd mail it to all RFF members, let them pull it out of the box, take one self portrait with it, re-box and ship on to the next member. one little drawback, i guess, is the fact that by the time joe got it the camera would have 4000+ shots run through it and he'd be 128 years old. ........ but boy, won't he be surprised?!!

This is a really nice idea. Put me down for $20.
I didn't read every post. Is there an email account set up on paypal yet that I can donate to?

My money's already been sent to RayG.

We have $115.00 already and $20.00 to come in a money order. We need to know what Ray_g has on Paypal.

you can also search "JOE RUZUTTOS" under the find a product , choose a category tab on their site folks....

and buy them ....which I 've just done. Though for international adresses you can't disable the shipping fee, but I'm sure Tony @ popflash will watch out for that for us...

Or use Ray's Paypal....though I had trouble with the email adress there...

Sent $21 over PayPal.

I agree Joe should get a real gift. Is there a way we could see some photos of his receiving the camera? I don't know how much Joe already knows about this thread, but don't you think this could be a shocker for him when he opens the door to find some Canadian RFF members on his doorstep with a nicely gift-wrapped ZI? I'd like to see his face! BTW, beware of his ticker!

Sent my part to Ray (paypal). :)

I'm with those who'd prefer to have a nice new Ikon delivered to Joe, then he could have a gift certificate for the eventual difference...but whatever you guys decide it's fine.

Yeah, I just sent my payment to Ray. It's easier that way for me, all things considered, so whatever happens, at least I feel like I did something for Joe!

I mean, if I can't have a brand new Zeiss Ikon, why not help give it to someone who deserves it?

How about a simple engraving like "To Joe from all your friends at RFF"

How about a simple engraving like "To Joe from all your friends at RFF"Engraving would devalue the resale value unless it's done in the Cosina Factory---then it would be a collector's.

Hey:)

In that case I think someone should engrave it with a 6" nail. It's a gift for joe to keep, not to sell!

Correcto!

With the engraving, he will never be tempted to trade it for some Canon gear. http://www.corvetteforum.cc/zeroimg/smilies/nono.gif http://forums.off-topic.net/images/smilies/naughty.gif

Now, this is a little odd. I'm in the middle of teaching my year eleven class (ie 16 year olds) about potential dividers as an intro to transistor theory. I have a pet analogy for teaching it, involving lots of little guys called 'Joe Coulomb' who run around the circuit, dropping off 'jewel's' (or Joules...) at each resistor.

So, from going to talking about a bunch of Joes to my class, I'm now off to buy a bunch of Joes. How surreal.

Right. Shoppin' time.

Shouldn't they be Joe Electron that carry Carbons(Coulombs) to to devices that transform them into Jewels (Joules)?

Now this is really getting surreal!

Good morning all. Let's try to make our target today. Hopefully Ray_g and Tony will update us in a bit so we know how we're doing.

If you'd like to contribute but haven't yet, here's how:

Go to your PayPal site and send a payment to Ray_g (rgeneroso@gmail.com )

Or go to the Popflash.photo sponsor site here: http://popflash.com/item.cfm?id=$$.2N_0

Now, does anyone have any ideas on how to get it to him?

Tony could mail the camera to a RFF member in the US close to the Canada border who can then carry it across to a Canadian member who can mail it to another member who lives close to Joe to deliver it in person.

Do you think we may be missing members with the title of this thread? Since Joe is well aware of what is going on perhaps we should title the thread more openly and in line with what we are doing, just to be certain that everyone that would like to give has the opportunity.

Not really. It allows for the definition of the volt as one Joule per Coulomb, ie one jewel per Joe. Each Joe represents one coulomb of charge, ie about 10^19 electrons.

Having won the prize for oddest thread-jack, I'm going to appear really naive. Does Joe know what we're up to?

My pleasure Frank. I'll make a general announcement and redirect to this thread; since this thread will receive the hits we'll have to do some shameless bumping of the announcement thread :), to keep them both visible.

Frank, I hope I can speak for the group in thanking you for taking the lead for the idea of this gift for Joe. It is an inspired gesture from one gentle soul to another, and Joe is most deserving. Thank you kindly.

Iv'e been thinking that if we go over, we might just be able to keep an account for joe at popflash. Then if he ever needs anything he can just get it. This would also make it possible for other folks to show appreciation at a later time...
