View Full Version : I need ideas for a ....
I am working with a sponsor on another possible great event here at RFF and I need ideas. Last time we gave away a complete Bessa package to a winner of an essay contest. This time the prize COULD BE even more enticing and I am looking for a better way of choosing a winner for the next possible contest.
This is stillin the works and no decision has been made. However, I am looking for idea'z
JT
How about a photo/print ad for the item, that the sponsor can use on their website. The sponsor can choose which one they want to use.
How about a Haiku poem about RF photography?
Haiku poems are short but can convey deep emotion.
May be a Photo and a very short story to that photo combination? I think that would be interesting.

Cage match. Two falls out of three. Submission/sleeper holds allowed, no eye-gouging.

Hey:)
Given that the last competition was word heavy, I think a visual slant would be refreshing. How about you and the sponsor setting a theme, and us submitting a photograph, taken with an RF of course. The sponsor picks the one (s)he likes the best and hey presto, someone gets some new kit.
ManGo
Not just an RF, a Cheap RF.
I know that it is the photographer and not the equipment but someone who can muster up some Leica or Zeiss glass has an advantage over some of us poor slobs who only have a J8 at our disposal.
That said, someone like Todd or GeneW could use a disposable Kodak and wipe the floor with me even if you gave me a new ZI and box full of good glass.
Who wants to give me a new ZI and watch someone truly embarrass me? really I would not mind! :D
If the sponsor is a Zeiss retailer and the prize is a ______(how nice would THAT be!) how about the sponsor chooses the phto they like best (perhaps on a stated theme) taken with an old Zeiss camera product.
>>May be a Photo and a very short story to that photo combination? I think that would be interesting.<<
A good idea. Perhaps a photograph or photo essay (no more than, say, five images -- more than five are disquallified) with accompanying text explaining why the images are important and why they were taken with a rangefinder.
>>I know that it is the photographer and not the equipment but someone who can muster up some Leica or Zeiss glass has an advantage over some of us poor slobs who only have a J8 at our disposal.<<
I disagree. The image always ALWAYS transcends the equipment or technique. Sometimes a lack of clinical sharpness can be an important element of the image. Does anyone care that Eddie Adams' fingerprint is clearly visible in the sky of his picture of the Vietnamese police chief shooting the insurgent in the head?
I do think that this time the competition should ceter on an image/s rather than words like last time, since we are photogrpahers, not (usually) writers. It would certainly make choosing easer/faster than reading essays!
Either that or what Bill said.
Just an idea. I didn't say it was a good one. :)
I like Franks first idea - a photo ad for a particular product that the sponsor wants to sell - of course this could be a problem being that everyone who wanted to enter would either have to HAVE the item already or have it delivered to them to borrow to create the ad.
I think something photo oriented (and by that I mean, photos with minimal words) is the way to go.
Dave
I agree with what Frank and Manolo said. Pictures instead of words. Better for all us RFF-ers that don't have English as a first language.
Sounds good. but, I need other idea'z as well. not just photos or essays. You name it i want to see what we can come up with. Dont get me wrong, I like photos as well.

i suggest an old fashioned photo contest, with several categories/topics, both colour & b&w versions and first, second and third place 'winners'.
simple & elegant...
Guess the correct release date of the Digital M. Winner gets a Zeiss t-shirt.
Not words or photos? A creative dance? :)
Ok... so.. not pictures or not words huh..
Ok.. I got one..
SCAVENGER HUNT :)

Just an idea : choice an attribute which can be related the sponsor (like freshness or reliability or multifunctional or...) and fix it as subject of the photo. Sometimes to exprimes an idea instead of taking a photo of an object can be more creative.
Allow to submit 3 photo, one of which (choicen by the jury) will be evaluated and judged.

Blending this idea with Frank's suggestion of photos only, how about a photo essay of five related photos on a theme, no text. Say, 'my town/city' or something like that?

OK, seriously...perhaps *perhaps* a self-portrait? With a rangefinder, B&W film (either silver-based or C-41), and with a focal length between 35mm and 90mm, to keep it "fair".
I didnt say no pictures or words. I just want to see what else can be presented.
I still say.. Scavenger Hunt or a "photo rally" (if you want to have it photo related).
The Scavenger Hunt can have everyone participate and is not based on someone else "judging" any photography - it's pretty much "you got the stuff you were asked to get" or "you don't"

I like the five photo essay Idea. Maybe you could limet it to online photos and have members vote. Another Idea might be that everytime you post a new picture in the Gallery you get one lottery ticket for the item to be given away.

If it is a photo-based competition, may I recommend a print submission policy and sponsor judgement? I think that will seperate the keen from the 'count-me-in's as it will take some effort to apply (rather than a few clicks). If it's an online-only submission then everybody will be tempted to enter, and the judgement process will be lengthened and made more tedious (not that looking at a single RFF member photo is tedious!).
As for other suggestions:
How about a design competition? I'm guessing that the prize here is going to be a current RF camera? If so, how about the task is to design the next model? The design with the most realistic and useful features wins the prize! Submission in the form of a proposal document and basic diagrams where needed.

Ugh.. by scavenger hunt I meant that someone would post (i.e Jorge) a list of what is required . We would then have to go out and shoot those items. Pretty simple if ya ask me :)
But now that Jorge has started speaking in tongues, I'm thinking that I'm way off track here.
I may take Bill's suggestion and go see "Mama Mia" to clear my head.

Hmm hide and seek could be problematic. And the winner is..... nowhere to be found.
I like the photo scavenger hunt too. But I live out in the middle of dullsville. So if the list is a photo of a subway train, or a submarine I'd have a very long way to travel. Would it be best to reveal the list one subject at a time or just give the whole list at the beginning?

FrankS' ideas are good ones. The photo ad would be the most attractive for sponsors, probably, but the Haiku poem is a unique idea with its own value.
I would say, photo ad of a camera . . . . but that would be very difficult for those without the camera in hand or for rent. That is the only drawback.
ideas for products? Kinda weak, maybe, but it could be very not weak.
How about a shot that really captures the essence of rangefinder cameras/photography?

I'll admit that after going through all of this the idea of the short photoessay is the most appealing - and the most difficult to do and to judge. Telling some kind of story, effectivly, in, for example 5 images is going to be challenging. Judging same is going to be even more challenging, I'd think.
Still, that's the one I'd like to give a try at. Heck, I think I will even if this isn't the contest topic.

OK, how about a picture of the contestant wearing nothing but his/her rangefinder?
Or, um, submit your best rangefinder vs. SLR user joke ("How many SLR shooters does it take to take a picture of someone screwing in a lightbulb?")
Ok ok ok, how about: a poem that spells the vendor's name with the first letter of each verse? It has to rhyme.

We are just excited because Jorge has arranged with one of our sponsors to award a member with a brandy spanking new Zeiss Ikon camera, a complete set of ZM lenses, the fancy presentation box and case they have for it, and a life time supply of film (that is the life of film assuming we out live it).

i think a bench-pressing competition or something simmilar would suit me best, however, I'm also willing to merely award the prize to the second place winner of the last contest ;)
If it is photo related, i think steps should be taken to discount, as much as possible, the effects of cheap gear and no scanner. With that in mind, a photo-essay, with accompanying text based on some theme amenable to a sponsor would be cool. Maybe a focus on the letter Z or something...
Hum, Rangefinder photo safari, a short documentary style photo essay about shooting <insert choice here>. Emphasis on equipment choice, shooting technique, and subject acquisition. Points given for originality and appropriate use of equipment and finally subject photos.
Example:
