I just picked up a user 1957 rigid Summicron 50. Can anyone recommend a good hood for it, preferably something that won't cost several arms and legs?
thanks!

I think Kevin Li, from Kevincameras.com, sells a third party hood that fits your 'cron. Otherwise, you have to shop for the rather expensive Leica part # 12585... like I do.
Look up Kevincameras on eBay. He sells these hoods for even less than $20 shipping included.
As for me? No, thanks... I don't think I need a hood right now. :)

If you want to have the hood that is 'correct' for that lens and time then you should look at the IROOA hood from Leica (which is the same as the 12585 hood that Francisco mentions above). It's a very nice reversible hood.
E-mail Bruce Woodman at americaneagle@htn.net Just ask for his 39mm ventilated hood. Excellent quality-the same that all the others sell on the bay at twice the price. Stu
He takes PayPal and he doesn't price gouge on shipping.

Thanks, everyone! So, is it just a standard 39mm thread? For some reason I assumed that it was something different.
Nope, 39mm. I think Bruce charges under $10 with postage-I bought several. Stu
I second Stu's suggestion. He also sells a 55mm Leica cap that snaps on the vented hood for only $8.95.

Great! I've sent him an email.
I have a hood that came with the penultimate 50 Summi I bought, it fits all of the 50 Summicron. The IROOA is the correct hood for the lens, but it commands quite a ransom. I also have a 39mm vented hood from heavy star that fits fine.
You can also consider a Series 6 hood with a push on 42mm adaptor ring too. The same one that fits the Canon 40mm filtered lenses will fit the 50 Summicrons.

I've got one of heavystar's ventilated hoods that lives on my 50mm Sonnar.. very nice and not terribly expensive
The main advantage of the 12585 is that it reverses. It makes a lot of sense when the camera goes in and out of the bag while you are walking around. It will also protect your lens from minor bumps, but will break away or unclip if the impact is hard enough, so you are less likely to end up with a filter ring dent on your summicron as with a screw in metal shade.
Also check out B&W's collapsible (thick) rubber hood in 39mm thread. Good coverage, convenient, and you won't need to buy a larger lenscap.
