Mention was make a few times in the past weeks by newer members of RFF, about the frequent posters being like a closed club, of feeling like they are interrupting a conversation, and feeling ignored.
As one of these frequent posters, I just want to say that there is no reason to be shy about jumping into any conversation here. If you want to be friendly, you will find many folks here happy to chat with you, and build the kind of relationships that exist between those of us who know each other through many posts over too much time spent here at RFF.
If someone is trolling (asking questions or making statements designed to stir up heated debates), then they may very well be ignored because we are so laid-back here at RFF that we generally won't take the bait. If someone comes across harshly and rudely, then they too may be ignored. There is no problem with differing opinions here at RFF, as long as members follow the tone of civility that has been well established here at RFF.
So again, I want to encourage members who may be reticent to join into a conversation, to do so. All you risk is the possibility of making new friends here at RFF.

Good advice for those who want to post.
Frank, is the brown R90/6 yours? I noticed you have the original head covers which look nicer than the more square /7 head ones but are not as strong. I have the square ones and stainless steel mufflers on my silver R75/6 but with 150cc's less. I also have the stainless steel roll-off centre stand. This is why I prefer silver cams. :D
PS: I was talking Beemers after noticing Frank's in the gallery.
Good you brought this up, Frank. I totally agree.
I am new here, and I already feel at home. This is a friendlier environment that at some other websites. Also, rangefinders have become my preferred tools for photography after using many years SLR systems.

Hi,
I was just about to start a different thread on a question of etiquette but it fits in rather nicely here. Many members have an RFF name and some use either their full name or a shortened version. Now some with an RFF name sign off with their normal name, for instance just about everyone knows Back Alley is Joe or vice versa :D However, sometimes this isn't the case but for some reason or other you get the know their real name. Which should you use in open forum? The main reason I ask this is I have often got confused (not difficult really :p ) when a real name has been used but I don't know who they are and the context sometimes gets lost. Picking up on Frank's comment, perhaps this one of the reasons that it may seem like a private conversation or closed club.
Kim
PS welcome to everyone!

As soon as I joined this sight I have always felt comfortable... Much nicer place than others.. If you ask for advice you get great help, even folks going out of their way to help you..
Critiques... kindly constructive..
This one of the first places I go in the morning with coffee...
Thanks Guys and Gals
Good point, Kim. When I first started here, I saw it as a form of initiation, putting in time reading threads, picking up clues as to who was who and matching real names to nicknames.
Thanks Frank, that is very well put. And well timed.
As one who "wrong footed himself" walking in here - I'm hoping for some indulgences and a second chance.
It's a nice place to visit - might as well live here.

lol ... why does Doris like to "hunt me down" and get nasty? :bang: :bang:
Thank you for the invitation and I will do my best to uphold the values of RFF. I will be slowly arranging, (starting), a gallery. I have to come up with an avatar. I want to list my gear.
I have been having a great time participating in RFF and wish you all the best. Please excuse me if I jump into the fray with a dumb idea - that is the nature of conversation.
Good point Kim. I don't think there is an etiquette about it particularly. I know that rover is really Ralph and hoot is Ronnie and so on and I call them by the first name that comes into my head, sometimes its one and sometimes the other.
Great thread Frank! I've missed the posts you allude to and I'm sorry that some new members feel like that. It means that we all have to make more of an effort to welcome and encourage new members.

I am often ignored, and I don't take it personally. I don't think "being ignored" should be taken as "a sign" of anything. People decide to make comments on other comments that made a bigger impression on them, as simple as that. Some people, in their "attempt" of not being ignored, go to such lengths as being trollish or "thinking out loud" without regard to the actual RFF community.
One must also be conscious of the fact that here at RFF there is a cross-cultural mix, and most English-speakers tend to assume that with the mere fact of speaking English comes U.S./Canadian/UK cultural traits. Even between them they can't agree between biscuits and cookies, and what "football" is. Not starting a flame war --- just pointing out something out that must be pointed out because to some "it's a given".
With the lack of faces and voices and expressions (and utter mishandling of language), the Internet becomes ripe for misunderstandings. So, before jumping to any conclusions: ask. Mind yourself. Remember that first and foremost we're here because we have a common interest, and we love what we do. Nobody is always right (an exception to the "all generalizations are wrong" axiom).
Ask. Share. There are hundreds and hundreds of us. It's not just you or me or them. It's us. And again, if sometimes you don't get a response, it may be that traffic is low; perhaps nobody has really congruent to say. Sometimes I'm so busy that typing an essay trying to catch up with my own mind is such a task that I just say to myself "somebody else will say what I'll say anyway". Sometimes it doesn't happen. Most of us --I gather-- are either the busy type or the retired type, not the type that is literally glued to the screen all day trying to fetch the next question.
That said... Blah blah blah blah blah. ;)
Ooops. Sorry, Mr. Speaker. I yield my time.

I'll add my two cents here...as a relative newcomer to RFF, I'll confess to lurking for a while before actually registering and making posts. That "toe in the water" gave me a good opportunity to learn what the forum was like and whether or not I could particiapte and make a positive contribution.
It's a fun, friendly forum -- Jorge and the membership are to be congratulated for their efforts in making RFF a desirable place to come and chat and learn about photography. I've certainly gleaned a lot of useful info from RFF and I hope to be able to return the favor to other members.
And finally, happy holidays and may you all find peace, good health and good light in the coming year.

this is what i like, friendly conversation and sharing.
i also like to think of rff as us, not me or you alone.
there is much good information here and it is usually shared in a non confrontational manner.
if comments get out of hand it is usually handled well.
if people do get out of hand, they also are handled, usually in a private and firm manner.
considering the number of members and the traffic here i have been fortunate in having to ban only a very few people.
second chances are freely given and usually respectfully accepted.
this is a good place.

This seems to be a pretty nice place. I've seen many posters get jumped all over for no reason on other forums (DPReview). People claiming they dominate photography (I never heard anything so stupid).
Everyone here seems pretty supportive. Though it's really expensive, visiting these forums makes me want to buy all kinds of cameras and lenses.
I keep saying it.. "Community" .. made me feel right at home from the beginning. :D
Thanks to the lot of you, old, new and yet to be seen :D
Cheers

I am one of those being addressed in the remarks by FrankS. And I have been re-considering, partly because of some very thoughtful and open PMs following my last post.
I like the comment about the cat avatars. I had to euthanize my elderly little pal last month, and though I still have my lovably goofy dog, I've lost my zen. I believe I'll try to find another zen kitty at the local shelter soon.
This AM I had a couple of external malignancies sliced out of me, and maybe some of my pent-up bile went with them. The fact is, there are many sharp, interesting, and clever people in this little community, and there's generally some comment from at least one of them which can elicit a smile.
One final point--I have to confess to a hopeless love for ugly bokeh; don't know why, but I like all the little ellipses and squiggles. Maybe I'm a closet impressionist.
I appreciate the timing of this thread, and my thanks to all who contributed.

Fred,
I lost my old ugly bag of hair / best furry friend, Pooka, just last year, and it was hard. I really sympathize. And as to your medical situation - I offer my prayers and heartfelt concern. I like swirly bokeh, like bubbles in champagne.

What "kafwuffle?"
Frank, thanks for starting this post, you've summed it up very well.
Kim, a very good point about the RFF name and real name. So once again I'll confess that Fred is not my real name, but it belongs to my cat in my avatar, I couldn't think of anything clever when I joined so when the black hairball wandered over my keys that night the name stuck. I guess I didn't know how long I'd be here.
So welcome all those who are new here and feel free to post and say hello. It's not a closed shop. We all have different views and respect those views of others. So I'll raise my paw, sorry hand and join in with a drop of focussing fluid.
Cheers!

Two banned contributors keep creating new accounts and making a mess in those forums. From the perspective of those that run photo.net it would be a lot of work to clean up. It wouldn't surprise me that they might do something drastic to reduce the workload.

Ya, if we take it at face value that that is who they are (seems reasonable to me).
If it is them then I don't quite understand what 'mature adults' might be getting out of doing that. Doesn't seem to be particularly closely related to their purported hobby. But then we may not want to talk about that here (my fault - sorry!).

Thanks. I don't really know what's going on yet. I'm still suffering from shell shock and recuperating from watching the Harry Potter this evening. (Don't waste your money.) The wife and I only watched it because it was playing in the same mall as Zellers. For Club Z points (Oakridge). The wife didn't want any more pics taken; and being with the wife, taking pics of cheeks or phuket was verbotten. (Don't think I spelled that correctly.)

I'm not that new any more, but it's wrong to think that people will have to think of ua s a new comer and try not to ignore any of ur posts so u wouldn't feel bad, or comment on ur photos in the gallery...
Months ago when i joined, no one commented on any of the photos i posted in the gallery, mainly i didn't have many scanne photos nor a scanner(summer period) so i admit not all these photos were intersting and even if they were sometime su just can't find a suitable comment, and then i also didn't have enough time to share my thoughts or comment on others work too...
The thing is i knew that once i start interacting with other forummers things will be different..How ever there was always someone to answer my questions, and the feeling that people will love to help u didn't make me feel bad at all about my gallery issue :D
And then when i started commenting on other people work, when i started to have more posts, more activity on the site, people began to give alot more attention, i still know that i'm not contributing alot to this site, but it's gettin better month by month, and i no longer feel a stranger...
Away from this forum(which i've found to be the greatest, friendly people who want to help, not brag on u) it's always like this everyhwere, u r often ignored till u make a significant contribution, till u've some activity around, till people get to notice u more often...There's nothing wrong with that...
Some people presentation thread can have more than 5 pages and mine didn't have much more than 5 posts :D, but it's all about how interesting ur post is, or wether u need to know soemthing or wether u r asking some intriguing question...
So i think i wouldn't sya it better than this...

Holy Fluid being called mere focussing fluid? Insult, lese majeste, blasphemy. I'll have you know that it comes in uncountable forms and varieties, rather like the divinities in my country (in none of whom or which, as it happens, I believe, but that's beside the point). There's the focussing fluid kind, sure enough, but what do you think makes shutters work smoothly? Aperture blades and setting rings? I haven't the time to list them all, so I shall point only to the most important: the one which keeps photographers steady when they have a dozen or two pints in their bellies.
"Payasam", in the languages of southern India, means a semi-liquid sweet, the most common being rice or other things cooked in milk. I am from central India, and the reason why I call myself Payasam (here as well as elsewhere) will not make sense except to a very few members. My real name, rather easier to mis-pronounce, is Mukul Dube.

And we're all here, in some way, because of pictures...True, true; and I figure anyone whom cats like has to be ok. Can be a warning if I have a prospective tenant the cat avoids. And that's an excuse for a picture of my little favorite Cinnamon...

I have tons of cat pictures but I would have to ask them for permission before posting any. I grew up with cats and always have a cat, or 2, or 3 or 4. One of my babies pased away a couple of years ago. She was 24. She needed fluids 2X a day near the end, and then her kidneys finally failed totally. I never got over it.
How anyone could label fifty adult men with cat avatars as unfriendly is beyond me.
Well indeed, you have to be really relaxed if you can put up with these little Jekyll and Hydes. One minute they're nicer than politicians on campaign, the next there's a tornado in the house tearing down the curtains.. And don't get me started on the free anatomy lessons, because mr. hunter just wants to show off how good he is in catching and dissecting mice.. Nonetheless, we all like the little devil..

She was dumped off at Meow Aid when she was around 2, then 2 years after that I invited her home. It was Jan 1st when I got her and her name is Baby. She's almost 10 now. I believe she was born under the sign of the fish. (Baby was her name.) Baby is a lovely long-haired female cat. Oh, and beside dogs (real or stuffed) she attacks racoons as well. I don't know why. Oh-2, she attacks certain people also like this neighbour---went straight for her hair.
That's my kitty! :)
I'm beginning to develop a Minority Complex on two counts. First, while I have kept cats and got on well with them (one used to sleep on my backside, though I have no idea what that might have meant), at heart I'm a Puppy Person. Second, though I rode a friend's BMW 600 quite a bit around 30 years ago, my own bikes have been two Nortons, two BSAs, two Royal Enfields and one AJS. A water-cooled Velocette sneakily slipped out of my grasp. As did an M2.
This is a wonderfull tread, thanks Frank. With all this talk about our feline friends, I felt compelled to change my Avatar.
May I introduce "Sophie Cat" our current permanent house guest. She is a black persian, about 5 years old and a great source of amusement for our 2 grandsons, William and Harry.
