I like the 50 fl, as well. Somehow, and all of a sudden (literally), I have six—in ltm & M mount—and none slower than f2. As the earlier 'Canon 1.4 vs. 1.5' thread elucidated, you can never have enough 50's.

:)

Jason Sprenger

50's collect in the corners like dust bunnies.

50/2 Summicron Collapsible
50/3.5 Elmar
50/2 Jupiter 8
50/1.5 Jupiter 3
50/2.5 CV Skopar
50/2.8 Industar 61 L/D
50/2.8 Industar 26

It's weird. I have a CV 35/2.5 and a CV 90/3.5. They displaced my Elmar 90/4 and Summaron 35/3.5 and I am not looking around anymore.

But in 50's, I can't settle on one. Even now, a nice Canon 50/1.8 would tempt me, weird filter size and all.

I've got a

.50 Thompson Center
.50 Remington 700ML
.50 Montana Rifle Works

unless you are talking about camera lens.

then I have

Contax Mount
CZJ f1.5 (2)
J-8 f2.0 black

Canon LTM
1.8 Chrome
1.8 Black

Nikon SLR
1.8 AIS
1.8 Series E
1.4 AI'd

Canon SLR
1.8 FD
1.8FD

Pentax 42mm Screw Mount SLR
1.4 Super Takumar (2)

Olympus SLR
1.8 Zuiko

Bronica ETRS SLR
f2.8 Zenzanon-PE

Plus I have some 55mm f1.8 Pentax Screw mount for Mamiya, 55mm f2.8 Micro AIS in Nikon and 58mm Topcon for a Super D.

One is not enough, I guess. I haven't figured out how to shoot more than two on a camera at the same time, yet.

Haha, I have the same problem---too many "normals;" and to make matters worse, I just bought another 50mm off e-bay. :bang:

Being new to RF, I only just now bought my second Nikkor 5.0cm to make sure both my S2 and R2S are each so equipped.

Meanwhile, back in SLR land, I just got another 50mm Nikkor to do the same and avoid swapping-out b/w the vintage F3 and equally vintage FT-3 that otherwise would have to share the same lens. Heaven forbid!

My guess is that you have to have at least as many 50's as compatible bodies plus one. After all, not only is is a great all-purpose lens - it makes for one heck of a sexy body cap!

Speaking of 50's, I just shot a roll of film with a 1963 50 1.4 Takumar on a Pentax Spotmatic that I had CLA and refurbished. It was the camera I started in Photography in 1963. The negs are drying but they really look good. I think I forgot how good that 50 1.4 Takumar was.

Joe,

I like the way the silver looks on the camera better than the black one. I doubt that that is a good way to judge a lens. I have not done a definitive test on them to compare yet. I'll try to compare here in the next couple of weeks.

Obviously, you have some pent up GAS.

2- Nikkor 50/1.4 pre AI
2- Takumar 55/1.8 M-42 (ok close enough)

I know in rangefinger land I would be interested in a skopar 50/2.8 to add for the Leica. This is almost worse than collecting bodies

Taylor, Taylor and Hobson Cooke Amotal made in England ca 1950 for another camera which was never manufactured and adapted for LTM with an Italian made mount. An excellent lens for its time whose value is determined by its rarity rather than its current ability. Mine is clear and free of marks.

Kurt,

Did not Taylor, et al, make a LTM lens under the "Xenar" imprint during WWII as well?

And I never got it straight - was the 'Cooke' the same 'Cooke' that made the famous soft-focus LF lenses?

Kurt, Whoops, I meant the Stewartry Trinol, not Trinar. An English LF lens remounted for LTM during WWII in Scotland. The only LTM lens ever marked 'Made in Scotland' as far as I know.

And thanks, but really, I just drink a lot and mouth off.

And in answer to #3 - Marc James Small seems to know a great deal. I have his book on non-Leica LTM lenses, but it seems to deal mostly with European lenses. There were so many Japanese ones! I wrote to Mssr. Small, he recommended that I write the LTM Japanese book. Sigh.

North of six Canon FD and Nikon SLR at the last count, plus two Retinas, two Rollei 35, 4 Contaflex, and a Minolta7s (fixed), a Sonnar, 2 J-3's, J-8, and about 3 Industars................what an embarrassing question to ask! Wait ... we're counting normals that are not exactly 50mm? And we're counting fixed-lens samples too, right?

So there's 2x 42/1.7 on the Oly SPs, the 40 on the RC, the 48 on the Minolta 7s, the 42 (I think) on the Olympus Electro Eye (or whatever it's called ... it's in pieces right now) ... does the 38mm on the Konica C35 count? Nah. And certainly not the 35mm on the XAs ... but Joe's counting 35s, so ...

Ooops, forgot the Steinheil 50/2.8 Steinheil Cassar on the Tower 51.

See how I consider 50 to be a bit of a telephoto, and 35-40mm is closer to "normal" for me, this is pretty depressing. How will I ever achieve balance? Hmmmm.

If you count 55mm, 45mm, & 47mm among the "50's," I have over 60 in a variety of mounts, mostly Zeiss Ikon Contax RF & LTM. Not all of them are in shooting condition, of course . . .

Mini steam trains are neat... this is not a model railway that fits on a table, but actually working steam trains about 1/10th scale. Actually pulls passengers. I'll post a few shots I took of a local club a few months ago when I get home.

"Best" is not only about sharpness. There are nuances of "look".

And yes, I agree, the RF craze IS worlds apart from the DSLR craze! DSLR's are all about newest and greatest which is only transient. RF's are about feel and quality, where a 1960's body or lens is "better" than a modern one.

No so true. That comment can only apply to camera bodies. Good SLR lenses are timeless.

The metal ones are timeless. The "polycarbonate wonders" have a limited number of mount/dismount cycles before they wear out.

like I said... "good SLR lenses" The Canon L series, for example... not all metal ones are timeless. Only >=good SLR lenses are timeless.

I consider many classic RF bodies to be timeless. Still working well after 50 years and good for another 50 after a CLA. This is certainly not true of any DSLR body which is obsolete in 7 years.

Used L lenses are more expensive than icky old 50mm RF lenses.

FrankS
11-02-2005, 15:35
There are some (many actually) RF lenses that I think are timeless as well. A collapsible 50mm Summicron and Summitar, and a Summarit. A Canon 50 f1.5, and an uncoated Zeiss Sonnar for the Contax (another timeless body). You can't get a modern lens to give you the look that they provide.

But again, to each his own. Different strokes... Live and let live.

RF's are about feel and quality, where a 1960's body or lens is "better" than a modern one. However, there are still a lot of RF fans who would rather have a recent Skopar 35mm lens than a fine old Summaron for the same price (and speed and condition). I think that's a symptom of the "latest and greatest" mindset in our midst here at RFF. However, it's good in a way because it allows more of the fine classic equipment to be available for those of us who really appreciate it. :D

This is definitely a diseased discussion... It caused me to check on what I had in the way of 50mm lenses...
50mm f/1.4 SMC Takumar M42 (two)
50mm f/1.4 SMC Pentax K (two)
50mm f/1.7 SMC Pentax K
50mm f/1.8 Zuiko OM
50mm f/2.0 Jupiter-8 (two, one marked Zeiss Sonnar)
50mm f/2.5 Color Skopar
50mm f/2.8 SMC Macro Pentax K
50mm f/4.0 SMC Macro Takumar M42
50mm f/4.5 Leitz Focotar
how about a zoom?
50-90 f/3.5 Zuiko (Pen)

Do 55mm lenses fall into the same category?
55mm f/1.8 Auto-Takumar M42 (two, one semi-auto, the other full auto diaphragm)
55mm f/2.2 Auto-Takumar M42
55mm f/4.0 SMC Takumar 6x7 (well, err..)

And doesn't this also open the door to 45's?
45mm f/2.0 Planar G
45mm f/4.0 Bronica Zenzanon
45mm f/4.0 Takumar 6x7
and
43mm f/1.9 SMC Pentax-L in M39

I have way too many 50's myself (ten), but I still need (want) another one - either an old black summilux or an old black summicron in M mount with the focusing ring that is fluted or scalloped, not just ribbed. Focusing tab optional. I might do some trading for the right lens. COndition of the metal is not important, but optics must be flawless.

Nice question to make!!
It makes me think why should I get some "new" 50 mm, and it makes sense... and I found the answer: Just because they were made and all lense have something special, be it either collectibles or not. Note that for "50 mm" I include all lenses from 42 to 58 mm ...

My count:

SLR Lenses
Meyer Oreston 1.8 50 mm (2) M42
Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 2.8 50 mm M42
Carenar 1.7 50 mm M42
Auto Miranda 1.8 50 mm Miranda Mount
Helios 44 MC 2 58 mm M42

RF Lenses
Jupiter 8 2 50 mm Contax/Kiev Mount
Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 2.8 50 mm Collapsible Contax Mount (Pre war)

RF lenses (with a permanently fitted camera behind)
Canon 1.7 45 mm (Canonet QL17)
Color Yashinon DX 1.7 45 mm (YE35 GT & GSN)
Yashinon DX 2.8 45 mm (MG1)
Yashinon DX 1.4 45 mm (Lynx 14)
Mamiya Sekor 1.5 48 mm (Mamiya Super Deluxe)
Voigtländer Lanthar 2.8 so mm (Vitoret DR)
Meritar 2.8 42 mm (Beirette Electronic)

RF lenses I NEED (and I´ll buy when money is available)
Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 1.5 50 mm in Contax mount (2) (Pre war)
Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 2 50 mm in Contax mount (1)
or
Jupiter 3 1.5 50 mm Contax/Kiev mount (2)
Jupiter 8 2 50 mm Contax/Kiev mount (1)

Note: this last is just another serious GAS attack.

Hmm, serial numbers and focal lengths... It does seem nifty for a 50mm lens to have a serial number starting with 50. I don't have one, but I have an 85mm that starts with 50, and one of my 50's begins with 25, while a 100mm starts with 200... Numerology? :)

This fits into my frame of mind for today. I have been considering getting a Summitar and I am wondering if I should get a coated or uncoated version. I shoot b&w 99 percent of the time, and love a classic look. The only 50 I have right now is on my new Focomat 1c (arrived yesterday).

FrankS

My Summitar arrived today with 3 filters and the proper Summitar hood. Think I'll use the normal Summicron hood instead though. This lens is just as clean as the one I walked away from a short while ago. This one is also coated.

Now I'm just waiting for a Summarit from Australia.

Someone commented that RFF is becoming more geared to photo gear collecting than to photography, but as one of the main culprits (I suppose) I disagree. The deeper you get into photography, the more finicky/fine-tuned/informed your tastes/wants become. I'm searching for vintage looking results, not caring for the modern clinical look of today's lenses, hence these acquisitions. As for camera bodies, I slowly gravitated towards classic gear as well, appreciating the heft and feel. When I was just starting out in RF photography, all I knew was Canon GIIIQL.

I have two current model Leica 50s; Summicron-M and the Elmar-M. These are the only lenses I have. I seem to gravitate toward the angle of view and perspective provided by this focal length. However, I am somewhat GASeous with respect to the speed and bokeh of a Noctilux or Summilux. I am planning to sell the Summicron and put the proceeds toward either of these two faster lenses. The Elmar, combined with a fast alternative would make a nice pair.

Interesting to note that of the ltm's, few have slow collapsible ones like the I-22 and rare I-50. These old FSU ones give a special look to photos like those they were taken in the 50s. They may lack the speed, sharpness and contrast of more modern 50s, but may make up for it in character.

Check the classifieds... ;)
