hello all,
i am getting hold of a Summaron 35/3.5 of 1958 vintage; and i would like to hear your advice on getting a hood for it
there is this IROOA, and 12585(H) which i believe is also a possibility
have i overlooked some other options or bargains work-around out there?
any comment or experience to share, in terms of usability?
i note that the Summaron is so cutishly small and one of my concerns is whether these hoods might obstruct the actual handling of the focus/aperture throw?
thanks & hope to hear from you soon
lee
The 12585 and 12585H will *not* fit the collapsible 35/3.5 Summaron. It will fit all other Summarons, including the ones with goggles. I'm pretty sure it won't obstruct anything it fits.

I have a 35mm/3.5, which takes A36 filters. I got a trashed filter, knocked out the glass, and glued it to a modified B+W rubber 39mm hood. With the hood attached, it's slightly more troublesome to set the aperture, but it does not affect ease of focussing. (On my Summaron it is necessary to set the aperture first, with the focus locked at infinity.)

I have the latest model summaron 35/3.5, I use the IROOA (it clips/snaps on) and it doesn't interfere with focus or apeture rings. The IROOA also fits the older 50 Summicrons, does yours have goggles?

i use a leitz clamp on hood made for the 35mm summaron / elmar on my canon 35/28.
works like a charm.

I use a Fison on my Summaron and it works fine. I have also heard of people buying old unwanted Leitz clamp on filters, knocking out the glass and using it as a hood without problem.

thanks all for your generous comment!
i think the example i am getting is what is called "collapsable"
i bought it from the evil bay here (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7554253183&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1)
will that ITOOY for Elmar 50/3.5 fit the bill?
any further comment?
thanks!

There is nothing "collapsable" about the Summaron 35/3.5, they are just very compact and can be good performers. I reaaly enjoy mine for that reason. I can't say anything about hoods because I have not got one. Hope you really enjoy that Summaron.

thanks for the correction, bob
i am keenly expecting it
The IROOA and ITOOY are wrong and won't fit. You need a hood the same as Back Alley Joe's, I can't remember the number, but I've got one somewhere.........
Well I've just found it.......it's marked 'summaron-elmar 3.5cm'.....
the nice thing about it is that it takes a standard 42mm cap on the front of the hood, so you don't have to take the hood off to cap the lens for dust exlusion.
I wonder if Back Alley Joe knows that.........

he does.
i didn't measure the hood but i had a cap handy that fit so when the lens is stored i use it.

Well done Joe, glad to see you're keeping up to speed, - just checking you've got your eye on us all.......How's sugar doing with all that extra walking......thinking about it the weather might be getting difficult where you are ?
Best regards, John C.

i try...
sugar is good, she had a good run yesterday at an off leash area. (went with a friend, not me)
surprisingly, the weather is very nice for here for this time of the year.
usually by halloween there is snow but we are still in + temps and just wearing light coats.
joe
OK joe, tnx for the update, - hope the docs let you 'off the leash' soon.
There is nothing "collapsable" about the Summaron 35/3.5
Really? Even the one he linked to? It looks just like the old collapsible Elmar, on which the collapsible Industar-22 is based.
In any case, I'm going to stick with my claim that the snap-on 12585 (H) won't fit this lens, because evidently there is no groove on the focus ring to accommodate it.
OTOH, the 12585 (H) *will* fit the more modern-looking 35/3.5 Summaron (click for pic) (http://home.swipnet.se/~w-60531/SfLeitzSummaron3,5cm3,5.jpg).
Nikon Bob is right. There are no collapseable 35's, only 50's and 90's

my hood on the canon 35/2.8 (quick pic).

You may be right about the 12585 hood fitting the more modern Summaron you linked to. I do know that older Summaron 35/3.5 lenses used a clamp on hood and somewhere in the production run they were threaded for accessory use as your more moder on shows. This is a confusing issue with these lenses.
Bob
There are two constructions of summaron 35's, the first looks like a collapsed elmar and has a 36mm front ring, they are all screw thread fitting.
The second construction is predominently bayonet fit and look like a summicron 35f2, these have a 42mm front ring the same as summicrons.
I think lee has purchased the first type, and the correct hood is like Joe's.
All the other hoods mentioned, itooy, irooa, 12585, etc fit the later 42mm front, and won't fit the small front.
Lee - existrandom, is your summaron 35f3.5 screw or bayonet fit ?

They do look superficially like a "collapsed" 50mm Elmar.
But, more to the point, I have and use both a bayonet "M" mount and a LTM screw thread version of this venerable lens, and I find that I don't really need a shade, as the front lens elements are fairly deeply recessed in a black cone and this actually serves as a mini-shade in itself. You might get a few (very few) degrees more shading with an add on shade.

leeMine looks like that, and it is A36. I don't know about the FOOKH.
Yes, Joe's picture shows a FOOKH, and it will fit, so will a FLQOO, and a 12505.

so my hood is a fookh?
wadyaknow!
it's the perfect compliment to my tiny 35/2.8...some day i'll spray paint all that leica lettering away...;)
joe
Joe, try a 12505, it's the same thing but it might not have all that embarrassing writing on it.
It's only a guess, 'cause I've never seen one myself, but if you come across one it might go cheap if no-one knows what it really is.

thanks all for your helpful info; looks like i am coming out of a big black cloud of mystery
i so heard from the seller that the lens has been shipped, will report later
cheers!
lee
I use a Walz clamp-on squarish lens hood that fits the 35/3.5 like a glove.
