Well, I just beat the USPS restriction on International shipping of cameras with Lithium batteries in the box. Got it to the PO one day ahead of the new limitation. The deadline was May 16.

Apparently the simple answer is that the overseas carrier used by USPS has experienced some spontaneous combustion problems with electronics powered by Lithium Ion batteries.

Starting May 16, no electronics with Lithium Ion batteries will be accepted for International shipping by USPS.

I shipped Fujifilm S5 Pro to an eBay buyer in Federation of Russia. Normally, I sell only film stuff, and my last 4 deals Internationally have been to Russia. In fact, in the last year, my sales overseas have exceeded my sales in the US.

This new limitation, won't hurt me because there's no profit in digital anyway. But it's bound to have a drastic effect in the electronics market.

I checked the prices for UPS and Fedex for the S5 and they were triple to quadruple the USPS price. I rushed it to the PO. The buyer has it and I got a glowing feedback yesterday.

clerk: please wrap it out
clerk: you know, batteries are not allowed
me: look into here, none are there
clerk: OK, wrap it back

Do USPS accepts batteries in package packed separately from device?

I don't think there is an option for shipping the batteries separately. The limitation is aimed at batteries specifically, and packaging separatedly would not alleviated the concerns of the ultimate carrier. I can't see the USPS coming up with a solution, since this is outside their own shipping system.

Japan has had this restriction for along time. People do it anyway, but be careful. The insurance that you purchase is null and void if the battery is found to be in the parcel. I never ship a battery for that reason.

If I had to buy a camera from overseas, I would accept it will be delivered without batteries and discuss this topic during price agreements. What is the problem?
