View Full Version : which photographer would you want to talk with?
say if you have a chance to talk one of the legendary photographer (or shoot with)
who would you choose? (including the decreased ones)
(I just had this in mind don't know if anyone have ask the same thing or not...)
Boy - tough call. It would be a toss up either Steichen or Mortensen...maybe Demachy.
If actually faced with such a choice I think my mind would explode...will have to cogitate on this a awhile.

Nobuyoshi Araki.
Honestly, he's not my number 1 favorite, but he is the person I think I could learn the most from.
Walker Evans - Dead
Tyler Hicks - Living
Robert Capa , just to hear the WWII stories and his feelings about the ruined film :P

Wow, I'm not sure I would want to meet any of my favorites... I just think it would most likely be disappointing. Hmmm, a few would be:
William Eggleston
Walker Evans
Lee Friedlander
Rinko Kawaiuchi
Stephen Shore
Martin Parr

William Mortensen, mostly for his great inovative ideas on lighting of all types.
And how he even came up with stuff like this:

Well a favorite just to hear stories about the people he'd met would be David Bailey. (also he's the reason I wanted to become a photographer)
William klein - he's (at least in my eye's) a legend.
William Eggleston might be interesting if I could get him to say anything!
Joel Meyerowitz because he's just so charming and seriously cool!!!
To be fair my list could just go on and on.

Anton Corbijn.
He's created some stunning portraits and has also directed two fantastic movies (Control, on the life and death of Joy Divisions singer Ian Curtis, and The American, George Clooneys least spoken film ever).
I'd also like to finally meet Chris Weeks eye to eye.
I would like to speak with Robert Capa but not expecially about photography. Only problem is that based on his reputation he would probably ask me for a loan to gamble on a horse, drink all my liquor and then hit on my wife. :D Before charming me and doing it all again the next day.
I like Capa's persona in some ways. A bit of a rascal. In fact he reminds me of my dad, likewise a bit of a rascal. He was a bit younger than Capa being only about 16 at the end of WW 2 but both were Budapest boys who proved the old adage that a Hungarian is the only person who can walk into a revolving door behind you and come out in front. HCB was always a bit caustic about Capa, claiming that when with Magnum, he and the other photographers earned all the money and Capa spent it all. I get the impression that if Capa ever won a lottery he would spend 75% of the winnings on wine, women and song. The rest he would waste. He was that sort of guy.

George Hurrell...
Two reasons...first to learn more on studio lighting...second to shoot so much closer portraits...
Edward Steichen.
I read his book (and some books about him), and I'd like to hear him tell the stories again.
There are some others also, if Edward is too busy.
Wow, I'm not sure I would want to meet any of my favorites... I just think it would most likely be disappointing. Hmmm, a few would be:

Andre Kertesz. But I've already managed to speak with two others on my list -- Sebastiao Salgado and Alfred Eisenstaedt -- so I think they'll do.
Going to school in NH I had the chance to meet and work with Lotte Jacobi (look her up) who like Richard Avedon and Irving Penn photographed many notable people of her generation. So...I'd love's to have been able to meet them both not only for their obvious technical and artistic mastery but more importantly (to me) for their sbility to relate to their subjects. In the same vein I'd love to meet Elliot Erwitt for his sense of humor about life.
I would say Walker Evans, but he sounds like a real pain in the ass guy to spend time with, so I'm going to pick a great photographer that was willing to put up with Evans --Helen Levitt.

I agree, also would like to meet Ralph Gibson.
Diane Arbus ... and find out how you can make such innocent subject material appear so malevolent at times?
That aspect of her work has always blown me away!
And Jane Bown .... to congratulate her on her wonderfully uncomplicated portraiture and find out how she achieves such an incredible sense of intimacy with her subjects.
I agree, also would like to meet Ralph Gibson.
I met Ralph and I guess you could say we were both underwhelmed

David Alan Harvey..........I was lucky enough to "bump" into him on the streets of Bangkok and I had no idea that it was DAH....after talking to him for a while and hanging out with him I realized he was a super cool guy.......we talked a lot about photography and shooting in Bangkok in general......good times, good times....
Sebastiao Salgado would be my 2nd choice, but I also met him a long time ago in California......both of them were super cool guys............
as far as RFF goes, Simon, Helen, Jon Manjiro, Roland Federer , Raid and a lot of others that I would love to sit down and have a chat with.......so many great people here....
cheers, michael
Patti Smith She's one of my fav. female photogs, good singer too.

Lots of names given, good resource for one like me who has done lots of shooting/printing but too little time to properly appreciate what the greats have done.
Perhaps not quite so famous, but I'd jump at the chance to talk with Helen Hill and Marek Fogiel, two members whose images I really connect with.
Cheers and keep shooting.

Tina Modotti, she was a great artist, an interesting person and sexy as hell. I'd spend the day talking to her and photographing her.

A friend of mine says to make sure your heroes are dead. That way, they can do nothing more to disappoint you. However, I will make an exception for one living photographer, B.A. (Tony) King. Spoke to him briefly once by phone, have exchanged a few letters, and would love to spend much more time with him.
His books are gems. https://bytonyking.com/index.php

I would love to talk to Lee Miller because she was hot, had style and knew a lot of artistic people such as Man Ray and Picasso.
no one in particular, but I think I'd like to be eggleston, every video I've seen he looks super relaxed, just walking around taking photos of whatever. I'm jealous.
I would loved to chat with Edward Weston. I was very fortunate to chat with Brett Weston at length. Also love to talk with Dorothia Lange, Margaret Bourne White and Gordon Parks.
Great answers.

Being a punk rocker I expect she's been throu a few scandles. Now sure i know what you mean. you lost me. I'm referring to Patti Smith the punk rocker from 70's 80's era. Girlfriend of Robert Mapplethorp. She is really a better writer, singer than she is a photographer but just listening to her explain the aspects of why she photographs to me would be quite interesting.

I can't pick one. Or two. But I think it would be great to sit in a room with, say, a half dozen or so greats. Maybe each from a different era. And then listen to them discuss something like "What did photography finally mean to you? Why did you pursue it for all those years?"

No. Rocker, photographer during the 70s and 80s scene. Mapplethorpe's girlfriend (http://www.postmodern.com/~fi/pattipics/htm/ps_rm.htm) (you heard me) and a celebrity in her own right (http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/368381/december-13-2010/patti-smith). Remember the song Because the Night (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0brHGJ6xqbk) written, possibly decades before you were born.
And yeah, she's hot.
In 1979 I had a chance to have a long chat with Marc Riboud and it has been decisive for my professional life afterwards. Today, at this age I would like to talk with Marcus Bleasdale...

Springsteen is the author of "Because the Night." And While Patti Smith is many good things, "hot" is not one of them.
Robert Capa!
I read a biography and found the stories inside fascinating. Survived Spanish Civil War, WWII or also Egypt. Spent much time with soldiers in the first row.
Knew many other famous people like Hemingway, Bergmann, Steinbeck ...
Had a very interesting and also troublesome life.
Tomio Seike for the mystery in his images.
