Gawd, this place is so 5 seconds ago.

Says the guy who just cheerfully ordered a certified pre-owned Nook Color for the grand total of $143.44 shipped, incl. tax. It does what I need, half the time I don't have decent wireless voice service where I am--never mind data--and the day I hold up a 10 inch tablet in front of me to take a photo, somebody please kick me in the shin and scream "what is wrong with you?"

I'm ordering one. It will replace my MacBook Air in every way I can think of - I didn't care for the resolution of the first two generations, they gave me a headache reading text/websites (whereas I can read for 30 minutes at a time on my iPhone 4s w/ no issues).

Still use my old e-ink Kindle for reading most of the time, though.

Well in that case, feel free to talk about how (more) magical and (more) revolutionary it is then.

I have to admit, it is rather funny watching someone try to capture video or photos on their iPad, outside and with too much glare to see what they are trying to capture.

IPad 3? Who gives a rats? I will have one eventually, but there is no need for it at this time. HD screen doesn't excite me anyway. I reckon it will take up just as much room in the landfill as the IPad 2... so no rush for me.

That screen will make a big difference for editing photos... And they put a real camera in it, so I'll have to figure out what Mattebox for iPad looks like.

If I ever had the desire to buy a tablet, I'd just get an amazon fire. I doubt the ipad offers the same value for money

Is this because you hate Apple or because you truly know the iPad is inferior to the Amazon Fire?

During the Christmas I helped my mother shop for my Dad and we tested this theory.... It's Complete BS.

The iPad is a spaceship compared to the Kindle Fire rubber raft.

I own neither at the moment. And, you should take my words in consideration of need and dollars available.
With the Spaceship you can go to Jupiter for $500. With the rubber raft you can get across the pond for $200.
If you only need to get across the pond you have a quandary.
Which is actually the better value?

Waiting for the iPad 12 in the fall 2012
Rumored to be a graphics card and chip embedded right behind your dominant eye, controlled by scratching your index finger next to the dominant eye. Taps into your brain. Storage limited to the % of brain we actually use. Most won't be able to store much over 2-3 Gb's.

In all honesty, I really think about this when I look at all the digital products we just burn through year after year. Never mind the fact that they are all using various non-renewable resources like rare earth minerals etc.

My iPhone 3GS (two and a half years old) just gave up in January. What can I do with it now? Nothing. It's sitting in a drawer and I bought a 4S. It never did work properly after the iOS 5 update.

i still have the ipad original and have been waiting for the new one...i skipped the ipad2 just cause.

this one looks good...i love my ipad...it does so much, is so convenient, i can type way faster on it than my home keyboard...has instant, constant contact with the net, email...great display for photos...my blog looks fantastic...and the new ipad will be even better for that.
and there are some great photo editing apps too!

I got the original mostly to read books on, but the screen resolution was inadequate for me, so I sold it. This should really fit the bill. Not sure it's a great use of 500 bucks right now but perhaps down the line a bit.

iPhoto looks great!

Finally was able to place an order for one... the website has been customer ddos'ed all day.

It may replace laptops for me. The resolution is a big thing for me: with an app that can deal with DNG files correctly, it will definitely be my travel companion.

Finally got through as well. I sprang for the 4G option - resale covers a little bit of the $130 extra, and I can see 4G actually being useful for work when I need it.

Have to say, what apple have been able to do with their marketing is fantastic. The fact that this tread on RFF exists is just pure marketing magic. Apple have even been able to keep the cult/magic around the brand after their products is everywhere, owned by everyone. Marketing magic.

(and I fall for it too, have an ipad2)

I have two early teens and none of us watch TV anymore because of the iPad. I found myself telling the kids to watch more TV last week just so we can do something together. I read 10x more than I used to due to these tablets.

And from that I glimpsed at the live blogging about it, sounds like the latest one is going to be able to do pretty serious photo editing.

You really have not been paying attention, Apple is not [and never was] a philanthropy based endeavor.

Ask anyone who was at the Homebrew Computer Club with Jobs if the Apple I was being given away?

The SELL great stuff, always have.

Not that it matters but it was different when Apple was the underdog. We were the hip minority back then. I think that's what Jubb Jubb meant.

I've been an Apple user since 1988, and I'm glad Apple's not an underdog anymore. The 90s were absolutely no fun.

Nah, I loved the Sculley era. I still miss my Newt (stolen out of my apartment--wonder if that lowlife ever realized it was a German OS version, useless in English), and the Powerbook Duo was just awesome.

So it has more resolution and is faster?

Eh... personally I like laptops a lot more. I'm actually beginning to tire of the iOS interface a little bit. It's very....rigid.

I wonder if there is a weak or strong correlation between PC/Mac preference and conservative/liberal political bent. (I'm thinking it is positive.)

I'm not a fan of infographics, but for brevity's sake, check out this (http://blog.hunch.com/?p=51781) and this (http://blog.hunch.com/?p=45344).

There are some problems with the methodology. But I think if you did a more comprehensive study, you'd come away with basically the same conclusions.

Nikon/Canon does not evoke the same correlation as computer platform and political ideology does in my mind.

What Joe said. I love hearing how clever Apple are at marketing like that's all they have succeeded at. I am happy with the original iPad and might consider the new one. I don't like waste though and I'll stick with this one for the moment. DNG files are very slow to deal with on the original iPad. One of my scientist colleagues says he can't write anything to make the iPad 2 fall over so maybe DNG and the iPad 3 will be practical.

I don't think Apple was ever against success and making money. Perhaps they were once the underdog (and almost dead), but only in between being a very popular company.

It's definitely getting a lot more interesting for photographers - that retina screen is amazing - it's very different than a typical display. I find it a lot less fatiguing. Imagine if you could tether that to a camera to use as a high-res display in the field?

I read on mine all the time, do you need more resolution because you want more text on each page? I don't since I want the text pretty large. But of course if you want the pages to appear as they originally did, the type gets harder to read, and more resolution would help.

I want sharper text, as sharp as, say, a printed magazine page. I don't like reading fiction on a computer screen--I've been longing for something as sharp as my phone, and this should do it!

I barely touch my 13" MacBook Pro since I brought the iPad 2 home.

I use my iPad for on-site payment, invoicing and receipt generation via Square. I also use it so clients can see results during photo shoots in real time with DSLR Remote HD. I also use it for eBook development.

I may upgrade to the New iPad later this year because of the display.
