View Full Version : Welcome to the new RFF Servers!!

12/13/2011

We are finally up on the new RFF servers and hosting service. We transferred from one server with RAID backup to 4 servers with a load balancer. In the future if a server goes down, it should be replaced within an hour -- not EIGHT f'n days like the old hosting service!

Over 95,000 threads, a million and a half posts, 288,000 gallery images, and 53,000 attachments were transferred to the new servers.

Did you notice the random gallery is back on the home page?

That is only one of the many updates which we are able to contemplate now.

Through the terrible hosting situation over Thanksgiving and the migration to the new servers, I want to thank Jorge Torralba, RFF's founder and tech guy, for all his hard work! Many Thanks!

Stephen

Me-thinks that exrtraordinary amount of photographers on line currently is a software glitch. When you click on many of those members listed on the forums page they come up as offline.

I am unable to uplad pics.

I had some struggles, too: it all seemed to go through, but I'd be dumped to a text page that was a url ending in ".mpk" or something. But the images were in my queue, so resubmitting succeeded. But there is something wrong there; at least, there is for me, as well.

Not that we have an excess of server performance, couldn't the delay of 30s between searches now be reduced to something a bit more user friendly? Combined with the rather limited search function (which often needs some trial and error to find a useful search phrase that does not deliver too much or to few findings) it is really crippling to have half a minute wait between each attempt.

The cookies RFF sets expire either after the session closes, or after one year. "Sooner" probably does not relate to the latter. You should look into whether your browser for some reason fails to delete expired cookies (e.g. due to permission issues or script blocking) or whether your browser kills/restarts your session without you logging off. I've seen the latter happen due to runaway "check for site updates" plugins or during parallel use with different browsers.

Try clearing your cache. I am far from a tech guy, but I believe this may solve your problem.

MP Guy
12-14-2011, 05:59
Cookies and sessions time outs will be addressed soon. The problem is related to the load balance. In a nutshell, the site thinks everyone is coming from the same place (load balancer). I need to modify some code for this. In the meantime if you get locked out it will clear every 5 minutes.

I just uploaded images without any issue and classifieds seem to be working. Remember the gallery software is not the best. if your image is not within the allowed limits, you dont get any indication of the problem and it just behaves as if it was uploaded and you are left clueless.

The software I have created handles this in a better way and we may use it in the future.

In case you forgot, or joined RFF while those random gallery pictures weren't showing: This being a photography forum, and a darn good one at that, some gallery submissions may be inappropriate for a work or all-ages environment. There's a checkbox for "mature" content users are supposed to mark as they upload such pictures, but in practice that doesn't happen and as a result, the random gallery can throw something unexpected on your screen, without you actively entering the galleries or a photo thread.

This is not at all an issue for me personally, but occasionally other members have complained.

hello

i wanted to attach a photo (right size and kb) to a post this afternoon. the attachment was not accepted, and i was redirected to my attachment listing, where i was 'using' 4.9mb of space for 60ish attachments.

whether or not this is related to new servers (and space), i would like to know if we should a) keep the attachment mb under a certain limit? and b) should we, as well-behaved forum members, review and clean out our attachments from time to time??

thanks

I experienced the same problem, when I wanted to upload a 50k image. The message I got was that my quota on uploads has been exceeded. After I've deleted basically everything I've ever uploaded (which wasn't much, really), the message still persists :bang:

Is this a bug or a feature?

Same problem here re attachments. Tried to post a reply to a query regarding 1938 leicas yesterday and after deleting all previous attachments a message still tells me that I exceeded my quota by the size of the attachment. Quota now appears to be NIL and the few attachments I did have are gone.
