View Full Version : Welcome Back to RFF!

CameraQuest

Thanksgiving morning about 6 AM West Coast time I became aware RFF was down. Reasonably the site should have been back up in 2 to 4 hours max. Other than a brief 6 to 9 hour window Friday night, RFF is finally back only 7 days later.

RFF is hosted on a dedicated server with RAID backup by a large company which hosts thousands of servers, a company that promises expert tech support 24/7 365.

The frustration of the situation has been beyond words.

Welcome Back!

Just curious. Did you ever get an explanation from the hosting company what exactly went wrong and why it took so long to fix?

I went one time to Pop Photo but I do that every once in a while, just swooping in and out. I didn't go to photo.net, but if the owner or mod was that kind over there, he is indeed a class act. Thanks to him.

But other than the swoop to Pop Photo, I just toughed it out. And it was tough. I'm so glad RFF is back up. Thanks also to Mr. Gandy, who must have spent considerable time haranguing his hosting company and still finding time to answer emails on possible purchases in the furture. Thank you again sir.

This episode reminds me of that line from a Nanci Griffith song. "There's no reason for a human being to ever be complacent."

We all take things for granted, assuming something or someone will be there tomorrow, because they've always been there in the past. One day I won't be here, RFF won't be here, we'll all be gone, and on to the next thing.

Yeah, it got bog slow, then disappeared. I was posting a new thread in the Critique section, and things seemed to stop right in the middle, so I started the posting again, and then the whole site went down. When it came back up, I found it posted twice, so I deleted the second one.

Hope that doesn't happen here.

Clicking my favorites link that normally takes me to the main page, brought up the "RFF is having problems" notice just about 10 to 15 minutes ago.

Are we staying with this ISP after all this grief? What about going back to where we were? (Could be a good subject for a poll.)

Yes, VERY slow loading, especially for the first page. Probably too many of us RFF addicts.

I'm also amazed at how long recovery has taken. I've run web servers in a university environment. I can't imagine how a large company with multiple servers servers and RAID could be down for too long, unless the problem was with connectivity to the outside.

Oh well, I, for one, realize how much I like RFF, and will help support the site, if called upon.

Thanks Stephen - what a mess. One felt like an addict being told to go "cold Turkey" - tried the Forum at least 2-3 times a day - to no avail.
Hope it will stay put now - it is too stressful to comprehend another 'crash"
However, got a lot of film developed and scanned, read several books, dis-mantled a F3 to find out why the meter circuit was acting up - but none of that matters without the RFf- fix!

I'm now reading regularly APUG and semi-regularly DPUG along with LeicaUsers, just to name a few.

In the last week I seriously fed my Pentax 67 GAS, had a pleasant Thanksgiving with my family (including my Dad who now only travels across Texas once a year).

RFF is back, my horizons are a bit broader, life is good.

RFF was exactly down during my businesstrip so I frequented flickr a little bit more. APUG is a good tip !:)

2 ingredients to this formula: the server/software and the users.

When RFF went down I lamented not having access to the site, but when I got in this morning and nobody was around it really brought home the fact that the users on this forum make it special (despite the --mostly-- good-hearted jabs we get on other forums!

Missed you guys!

If your server was the only one with problems, you are rightfully upset, but for you to expect 2-4 hours recovery (or even 7 days recovery in a disaster situation) you would really have to pay serious money.

Yes, that expresses it very well. And thanks to Stephen (and the whole team) for getting us back up.

Would it be possible for us to know the reason we went down? Was the hosting provider negligent in some way, or was it something that could happen anywhere? Would we be better off to go back to the former host, or is it best to stay here?

This was upsetting to some.
It was clearly frustrating for Stephen and, likely, most if not all the moderators.

What I found interesting in the time that RFF was down and out was how many people actually "depended" on this site. That is, how people seemed to feel a "loss" over it. On a smaller scale, this speaks to how closely knit the folks are here at RFF. On a larger scale, it speaks to how the entire concept of online communities has evolved and changed our view of what is, perhaps, important to us.

It was very interesting to observe. I wonder what would have happened had it gone away altogether. I'm sure we would have adapted but I also know, personally, that you do feel a sense of loss; whether it be large or small.

Glad it's back though :)

Cheers,
Dave

My reaction tracked Dave Sang's. I think it shows that when folks create a community like this, they feel a sense of ownership. They also feel a sense of loss when they can't participate as they've been used to. Think about the time that someone with 1,000 posts has put into this place over the last several years, and the fact that most of us do not communicate with one another other than through this site. The thought of that going "poof" was clearly disturbing to many here.

On the other hand, I've got a lot more work done in the last week...

Cheers,

R.

I can access the site through the forums list page. My bookmarked link to the active threads page doesn't work. Any way to get that?

It's a big relief :D
I don't come on here as often as I should - last weekend was the first time in quite a while & I was distraught to think RFF was gone :(
Thank you.

Website is faster now?

What's up with www.rangefinderforum.com still giving the message, when the boards work?

People,

as you can probably tell things are still not back to normal operation,
but we are working on it.

Many Thanks for your Patience!

I thought we just lost RFF again just now...... thank god it's back up again. I don't want to sit miserable at the corner of the room anymore..... for one week

Thanks Stephen, for the wonderful opportunity to get some serious shooting done.

I didn't take advantage of it, but the thought was there. Cheers. :D

This is the first time I've got back in since last Wednesday when the white screens started.

It's great to back :-)

I noticed that for most of the day the home page url routed me to a web page marker hosted by GoDaddy.com.

The GoDaddy.com marker featured a video link at the bottom of the page featuring the full sales pitch and wisdom of Bob Parson's.

Yeah its definitely way faster. I always thought it was kind of slow crap before (speed, not content). I was happy to use it anyways.

Nice to see that you're back, Stephen.

And nicer still to see how much RFF was missed.

You have indeed become a part of most of our lives.

Thank you.

Indeed! I was quite surprised by some of the negativity I encountered by lurking on those other forums. They must've been reading a different rangefinder forum because they sure as heck were not talking about you wonderful human beings!

With this site back up it's like Christmas has come early this year!

The white screen was so we can calibrate our light meters - it's the sony f/5.6 rule.

Thank GOD you are back. I tried applying a rangefinder patch, but I guess they just dont work the same way as nicotine patches. :)

That's good! I took some photos, but my X100 had to go in for repair. My last roll of Ektar is not well exposed. My eye is sore. Thank God the site's back up. Thanks Stephen.

Hello Stephen,

I'm not sure how much you pay for Web Hosting, but perhaps you should explore alternatives (sorry to state the obvious). Speaking as an IT outsourcing guy, you deserve better than a 7-day disaster recovery schedule. Our company typically delivers a recovered environment within 2-48 hours (depending on how much you pay, and scope of recovery, etc.).

Glad to see the familiar black background again!

There were times when part of the archive was accessible, but when that also went .....was when it got really unsettling.

So, anyway, in case it wasn't said before, in so many words, Thank you, RFF, for have been such an enthusiastic and helpful source of knowledge for a newcomer to film photography!

Stephen
I can't imagine how frustrating this must have been Stephen. I suppose the only silver lining, is that the reactions and comments in this discussion thread prove beyond all doubt, that this site represents so much more than a collection of bytes on a web server. I cannot think of any other forum on the world wide web whose members have accumulated so much photographic experience and knowledge, yet who remain so friendly and good natured. It truly is a one of a kind.

I have missed visiting RFF these last few days. I hope your stress levels are winding down now Stephen and thanks to everyone who helped to get it up and running again.
Regards,
Brett

I am very happy to see this forum back on line. You were sorely missed as this is my favorite on line community. I was surprised to read a number of negative comments about rff on some other forums. Not my experience here at all.

maybe not...but josh is a class act...he welcomed us in and started a thread for us...he's a good man!!

I agree with Joe 100% on Josh's hospitality. This is a good man.
I visit RFF many times each day. It starts around 8:05am, as I drink my first cup of coffee at work. Then, when I need a 2 minute break, between research and dvising and teaching, I check who is posting at RFF. Then, at night as there are commercials during a TV movie, I visit RFF. Even my children know RFF. My wife knows RFF very well too. She now knows that having RFF for me is better than other things.

It has become a very nice place in cyber space for me, with real life human interaction whenever possible.

Welcome back home.

It is slow indeed. I thought the reason is that I am accessing it from BG, but since you experience the same problem maybe the hosting is the reason.

things are moving along. If all goes well, we should be on the new system within a few more days.

Having the cloud for storage means you will be able to upload larger images.

I want to emphasize that no changes to the way rff looks or works is being done at this time. Those are for the future. This is simply a move to a different platform with load balancing and cloud storage.

So RFF seems to be back in business since four days ago already...? And I found this out just a couple of hours ago. I checked in a couple of times a day and until this evening everytime got the dreaded excuse page. How is it that my computers didn't refresh the link?
Well, happy everything seems to be working again as it's supposed to. The Classifieds also, I hope. I have some gear for sale... :)

I've heard of several members that had to force a reload or trash their cache to get rid of it. The "excuse page" redirected off-site, and the redirection may have been from some very rudimentary server, so it seems to have lacked a proper Expires header...

Yes,
Ctrl-F5 while on the expired page should work on most major browsers.
Once you've done this, the new content should show.

I'm curious if the upgrade will allow management to consider reinstating the random gallery images on the home page?
