View Full Version : William Eggleston in the Real World: what camera?
What camera is that little black SLR that Eggleston fiddles around with in the film "William Eggleston in the Real World" ?
Thanks,

I'm going from memory, but is it the Mamiya Super 23?
He does use that or a similar RF, but the OP's asking about 1 of his SLRs. He's been known to use Pentax, so maybe a K2, MX, or LX [also working from memory]?

I don't think so... I do remember him using the Mamiya, and I do not remember him using a little black SLR though.
Maybe get a screenshot filmfan?

I understand that, but it wouldn't be the first time someone mistakenly called a RF something else... :D
That was the only camera I could remember him using in the movie, so I threw it out there.
It isn't in this trailer is it?

It was more likely a flask of Scotch.

In an interview I read William Eggleston suggested htat he did not really think too hard about what camera he would use. He just picks up whatever he fancies on a particular day.

That very well may be, but seeing him shooting the Mamiya Super intrigued me enough about the camera, I end up owning one, and it becomes one of my favorites.

I remember there being a Pentax in there--I think the bit where he's shooting some garbage in a dumpster? Either an MX or an LX, I suspect a black MX.
Hey, I currently have a black MX....think maybe it was used by him :)
Not all that long ago I went to a retrospective of his images. As always, something interesting to find in many of his shots. NO discussion though on the camera he used, from what I could recall.

It seems the concensus on the internet is that it is a Pentax, but the model is debated over.
there was a big discussion about this on the pentaxforums and I believe most of us decided that it was most likely a black MX. and the lens if I remember correctly from the video I saw (where he was inside a restaurant I believe?) was the smc 40mm 2.8 pancake lens. but there were still some that thought it was a black K series (possibly a KM or KX) I’m almost certain though that it was a black MX.

Mamiya (Super 23 or press), a Leica RF (don't know which model) and a Contax G2. I don't recall seeing a Pentax / SLR.
Michael Almereyda's book 'For Now' also confirms Mamiya / Contax and Leica.
Whatched that film yesterday, while it's not possible to tell wether it's a MX or ME or similar, the lens is clearly the Pentax 40mm f2.8 pancake.
