next lens: Leica 35 Summilux v2 - Made in Canada

I picked up the lens, I bought on the internet from a German camera store.

It is a 35 Lux pre ASPH v2 and indeed it is looking cosmetically in absolute wonderful condition:

- barely a sign of use all around the barrel - I love this
- a little dust inside, as had to be expected
- slightly sticky, focus (feels slippery in times, the way it feels, when ham fisted repairmen use oil, to spice up an old lens for sale)
- it has the rear element protection shroud, which needs modification for digital Leica M bodies (no focussing beyond ~12-15m + no mounting, when focussed @ infinity)

I intend to:

- completely disassemble the lens
- modify the lens shroud to specs + repaint of machined surfaces
- clean dust specks
- clean any old lubrication from the helicoid
- relube the helicoid with correct lube

I am now in my holidays without workshop, but would like to collect some info from people familiar with this lens, to ease the riddles of proceed into the lens :)


Any input regarding the disassembly or function of outer visible screws is highly welcome :)

Which screw did what?
How far did you go?
Is the shroud a single piece, one can remove or is it part of the assembly, needed, for the mechanical function of the lens (I read a comment somewhere, that it is easily removed by the removal of three screws, once the lens is disassembled ?

it is indeed a wonderful lens. It had a fault, trying to fix it
I broke mine! You can get the lenses out in one, but then....
So, give it in good Hands.

The thread title was not "should I work on my 35 Lux myself?", but honestly thanks for your concern.

It is not my first venture in this kind of work and not the first expensive lens, I work on.

Part of doing such work is being informed, which can be helped by sharing info with others.

Some of these work on M8/9 without mods. Try it first. All 3 that I have had worked fine.

it is quite a while since I did this. But I remember that it wasn t so hard to get the lenses out. But then you can depart the the two parts as you can see. There is a pivot and once you get it out, the clue is to get it back in and hold the right scale of the lens for the rangefinder.
I hope it helps a bit.

why I did this. The lens jammed, when I focused near distance, and didn t come back. I better send in for repair, now it is broke and I sold the lens and keep the rest for me.
