When I look at all the avatars here, it strikes me how many cat pictures there are... So, let's hear your preference.. and show your pictures..

I'm very much a cat person. :) I've had cats ever since I was very young. We occasionally had dogs (sometimes both at once) but it wasn't the same. I love most all animals, though. :)

Is there any doubt? Why else would I have named my cat Rover?

Dog, Dog, Dog!!!!!

They say a dog is a man's best friend. What they don't realize is that man is a dog's best butler. With cats you know you're always negotiating space and attention. Canon/Nikon, Leica/Bessa, cats/dogs, Yankees/Red Sox, St. Germaine/Lyon, it all makes the world go round...

It has been my experience that folks who like to control everything around them detest cats. Most dogs love to please. Cats, on the other hand, seem to believe they are doing us a favor by eating our food and allowing themselves to be petted. But cats really don't give a rat's rear end about what humans think. That's why I like 'em. Cats are free spirits.

Both...been a dog lover my entire life but have been without for the last 8 or 9 years (losing the last one was difficult). We have two cats now.

I have a cat that I think was a dog in his former life. He likes going out for walks (on a leash), fetches balls, has quite a loud meow when he wants something, greets all visitors, and --strangest of all-- doesn't mind having his belly rubbed. But everything else he's very much a cat. He lets me pet him when he thinks I've deserved it.

I one of my cats has noticed how many more treats my dogs get compared to my cats so he is in dog training. He now is hanging out with the dogs, follows them around, lays on the floor next to them, and sits right in line when the pantry door opens. He weighs close to 20 lbs, but still hasn't mastered the 15 second consumption of a Milk Bone ability yet.

I like dogs, I like some cats. Anyhow. my avatar on other forums is a cat, sort of.
I'm told one is not allowed to post on DPReview unless one has posted a cat photo :D

That's why I like 'em. Cats are free spirits.

I think this is the reason I identify with cats too.

Cats are natural con artists. They have figured out that they don't have to spend all of their waking hours seeking out birds, rodents, and similar fare when they can con humans into taking them in and giving them and all-you-can-eat buffet, shelter, plenty of toys, and better medical care than some humans get. All they really have to do is feign interest in humans every so often. :) :)

I love and have both. I agree with kiev4a, I remember reading somewhere that many known writers were cat lovers, while dictators, military leaders, etc. hated them.

I'm a control freak, but I appreciate and admire cats for their independence, I adore dogs for their loyalty. I think my dogs are more like my chidren, my cat is more like a buddy--an old, grouchy one at that...

As for taking pictures, my Siamese cat's blue eyes always gave flash some trouble. Other cats I've had with other eye colors were much better, though could still reflect flash. Cats don't move much, so makes them easier to photograph than hyperactive dogs, but dogs can be commanded to stay in place or certain positions, cats can't seem to be told to do anything they don't want to!

Here's my brady bunch. Not the best picture, but it's rare that they're all together in one place.

I like both cats and dogs, but voted for dogs in the poll. I read or heard somewhere that dogs have been domesticated a lot longer than cats (something absurd like 1000 years or so). In honor of that alliance/allegiance the very least I can do is click a button in an OT poll in favor of the man's best friend. :D

...Cats are free spirits.

somone once said, "the greatest trick the devil ever played was making the world believe he didn't exist" (or something to that effect). This is the feline equivalent to that quote: The greatest trick cats have ever played was making the world believe they are free spirits. :)

Dogs are for athletic, sports-loving outdoors people.
Cats are for artsy types, lovers of the good life, indoor people.

I voted for cats, never really liked dogs...

Cats, but not by choice. Cats seem to choose me.

Dogs are natures way of saying: "get up and do something, let run and chase things!", cats, on the other hand, are natures way of saying: "sit down, chill, enough work for today, here, let me sit on your lap and prevent you from moving."

Dare I mention that there are many people in my country who really eat dogs? It's now prohibited by law except for ethnic groups, but it's not well-enforced. The non-ethnics eat them as sort of finger-food during drinking sessions.

The discussion made me change my Avatar. Ivy is a reformed alley cat. If you don't pet as much as she believes is required, she can swat you so fast you don't even realize you've been hit until the claw marks on your arm start bleeding

I once was a dog-person, but circumstances forced me to release them to people with much larger spaces for them to frolic in. I was adopted by three cats and continue to serve their various needs. I believe I have been promoted to the head cat butler in the house. They have only to sit by the door and purr and I dutifully open it for them to leave or enter as they desire. The one in my gallery I call baby came to use when he could fit in the palm of my hand. We fed him tiger's milk, a product you can buy, and he is now the top cat of the bunch. He also likes to sit on my lap for 2-3 hours a night. I'm glad he has a stubby tail.

My avatar is Freddie the cat (A.K.A. Kruger), very sharp in each corner. Got him as a rescue cat when he was four years old and awaiting an uncertain fate. I have been his butler for the past three years. He's a bit of naughty moggie who like attention on his terms, even then you have to count your fingers after feeding him.

Hah, my calico is beautiful, high strung, and moody. She thinks she's a woman - even got mad when I bought new furniture. She desires frequent attention but in minute quantities, and while she seems to enjoy having her ears rubbed (stretching to meet your hand, etc..) doesn't tolerate very much of it. On the rare occasion when she IS cuddly, you have to push all the right buttons in the proper order, or the whole deal is off. First, let her approach you, then when she wants to rub against you - use the back of your hand (you can't pick up with the back of the hand). Then, after a while she'll climb in your lap and allow you to rub her back. Then, and only then (maybe 10-15 minutes into this) she'll start attempting to lick the skin off my jugular veins. I think it's affection, but she might just be trying to drink my blood. But no matter how aloof or standoffish she may seem - when I wake up in the morning I can guarantee that she'll be sleeping on my knees (just out of arm's reach) or curled up in the back of my knees if I'm sleeping on my side).

I was at someone else's house recently and their cats allowed total strangers to pet them. Amazing, but I wouldn't trade her for the world.

I like both but prefer dogs. My two dogs are happy to see me when I get home. My two cats couldn't care less if I was home.

I also prefer normal sized mutts. I hate small dogs or any dogs with smushed noses. I don't mean to pick on two previous posters :) , but pugs and Boston terriers are perfect examples of why humans shouldn't play god with dog breeding.

Here's a pic of my old dog Ryley and my new kitty Fiona.

Miss aloof actually misses me very much when I'm gone - just dont think it translates to any prolonged petting. It's amazing the things I've noticed that I would describe "complex emotions". Like the cat being furious with me but still struggling with velveted claws. That's an intersting little concept actually - being mad at someone you love.

For the record, I like dogs, and have had plenty growing up, but I loathe little dogs, and wont keep large dogs inside. I think you get so much more out of an indoor pet (unless you happen to spend all your time outdoors I guess.)

Mostly I am a cat person - I Have 4 cats at home and one at work - at home it is two british shorthairs, one half british shorthair / half norweigian forrest cat and one half shorthaired danish cat half - The one at work is half british shorthair and half norweigan forrest cat - In one of the pictures attached he is on top of my screen with my teddy bears and on the other he is messing up the desktop of my partner - or perhaps it was messed up and he just found a comfortable resting nest :-) he is called Emil, after a naughty kid in one of Astrid Lindgrens books // any way I will have to get used to being something of a dog person to as my whife just ordered a lagotto dog - it was born two days ago, so I expect it to arrive close to x.mas - they use lagotto dogs to find truffle mushrooms in italy but I will try to train it for chanterelles in sweden - I have been of this forum for a while but I hope you are all doing well - best Ruben

Hello all,

My parrot, just wants you to know "what a good bird!" he is. He is Jag ("the BIRDY!"). He does not like Cats. And he is feeling left out in the vote. What about "the BIRDY!". He is very emphatic when he talks (except when he quietly tries to get away with saying "''ut UP!"... or else he gets locked up).

But what about the birds?

Your bird shouldn't be so narrow minded. My cat just loves birds, fish too. Not fond of dogs although there I did see a miniature something or other that looked like yoda that looked like she might enjoy. I bought her fish to entertain her while I'm at work - after a couple weeks with no fish, when I brought them home she jumped up on the stool next to the aquarium and wagged her tail like a dog. If I bought her a bird, she'd be in the garage trying to figure the wire cutters out.

I've got both a cat and a dog. When taking the dog for a walk n the evening our cat somteimes follows. I feel like the Pied Piper!
They are both due a visit to the vets next week for their annual booster injections. They will both put up a good fight.

I agree with you up to a certain point, esp with respect to breeds that can't propagate without human intervention. But I think it applies to all domesticated dogs, they are all prone to one problem or another due to breeding by humans--like dogs with long coats, disproportional bodies (e.g. dachshunds), abnormally long ears (hounds), joint and hip problems (large breeds) and skin diseases (sharpeis). I figure they've been domesticated and bred for hundreds or thousands of years for particular reasons, we already damaged them as a species. But they're there and nothing much we can do about it now except care for them, unless we stop breeding all domesticated animals forever.

I like big dogs, too, while I didn't hate small ones I didn't want to keep them before, but the size of my house and lifestyle limited my options. Now I do appreciate their "portability," though large breeds are still my first love :D

As a zoologist (non-practicing) I like most animals (except cockroaches - something about the way they move...). But it has to be cats. I've never owned a dog but have lived with them on a few occasions and loved them to bits but the purry furballs have it every time. We currently have two - Talisker (who should be my avatar!) and Tamdhu, who were both strays who decided that living with us was much better than being on the street.
