I have an excellent Leitz 90mm Elmar but have no idea what the filter size is or where to get them

Later versions are 39mm-the most common Leica filter size-earlier versions are 36mm slip-on or A36.

The 90mm f/4 Elmar-M (with filter threads) takes E39 (39mm) filters.

mine has threads but it is an LTMIf they are actually filter threads, it probably takes 34mm filters. If not, a 36mm clamp-on filter would probably work. (They might just be circular ridges that look like screw threads.)

It takes both. --- BTW, the thread title is a bit, err...general.

If it's for your Bessa R... it's going to have threads in the rear. Usually, if they're from the 50s and 60s, their filter size is 39mm. In fact, I'd dare say it's still 39mm. The Elmarit went from 39mm to 46mm filter size in its latest version.

I had an Elmar a while ago. Kinda funky lens. Mine was a 1936 vintage, uncoated and very good with B&W. I never put a filter on it, though... Good luck finding one! :)
