Like many here, I have enjoyed Mike Johnston's SMP column over the years. Sadly, it seems like it has come to the end, with today's Farewell (http://www.steves-digicams.com/smp/09112005.html) installment.

It has been informative, sometimes controversial reading, and always entertaining.

I remember reading a number of complaints that The 37th Frame (his newsletter) was missing and that he wasn't answering emails. Maybe, like most of us, he's just stretched in too many directions.

On a lighter note, it seems his new "How-to" book could have been an RFF project, seeing as how it was the RFF that clued him in on the How-to (http://www.steves-digicams.com/smp/06012005.html) part. ;)

It is a shame. I enjoyed his columns...

Sad news. One of my favourite columns -- Mike was never afraid to buck the trends or speak his mind and, whether you agreed with him or not, he based his opinions solidly on his experience. He has consistently taken the camera manufacturers to task, for instance, for creating such crappy little viewfinders in their digital SLR's -- mere ghosts of the real thing that gives a good SLR its chief compositional virtue. He also championed photo books (including ours). SMP was a gem. I'll miss it.
