View Full Version : strange light streak ??

about every 3rd roll with my 1955-ish M3 I get a photo with a strange light streak across the upper part of the photo. It starts at the right and gets smaller as it goes across the photo to the left. I think it's too uniform to be a light/lens flair. I use a leica lens hood, the kind with the slits in them.

Doesn't happen often, like I said, one photo about every 3 rolls or so.

It seems to happen when I'm shooting at 1/50 without a tripod (probably wide open at 2.0) with my 1955-ish Summicron

any help?

like this? this is a light leak, probably from the light shield in front of the shutter.

yeah that's it. why does it not happen all the time? Does the camera need a CLA?

dunno why it doesn't happen all the time. it's a very strange leak. I even got it in low light a few times... could be a specific angle that the light has to come in or something.

does the camera need to be serviced? well, if you want that fixed, I suppose so...

600th post. I spend way too much time here...

My M4 used to do that. It didn't happen often enough to bother me too much.
Lost a couple nice shots because of it though.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but I just got a roll back from my M5 that also has a very strange uniform light leek of some sort on about a third of all the photos.
Maybe it's from the rear door? I'm not sure. Fortunately I still have a week left in my warranty from Steve's when he CLA'd it in January.

I had a light leak on a IIIC that only was noticeable if I left it on one frame a long time with my camera in bright sunlight. I found it by taping a superbright LED to a button cell. Droped it in instead of a film cassette, went in a darkroom and could see where the light escaped. I plugged that up with black felt and the light leak was gone. But then your pictures could have happened in processing.

People always complain about the light leaks on certain russian cameras but it looks like leica is not much better in that regards. Sometimes pinhole leaks on the shutter of leicas cause light leaks on leica cameras too. but never on my contax/kievs, as they have metal shutters. Good luck finding out where the leak is coming from. I am not sure a CLA would take care of it. The camera might need more repair than a CLA - Kievman

This does look familiar! See also this earlier thread (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=105567).
