I love the dog portrait!
Thanks, Ray. This will definitely go into my new photo book "Behind Street Photography". :-)
With an emphasis on 'Behind'! I'm starting to like what I'm seeing from all you early adopters of this camera. It looks very usable for the way I shoot.

Less than 24 hours in I'm liking this. All JPEGS. I haven't learnt yet what to do with the RAW workflow. Out of respect the first one is the Hexar, a little worried I think.

Here's a couple - I'm finding the focus to be hit or miss, and ISO management a bit hinky.

very impressive images, I'm loving the low light capability of this camera.
This is my first time to post images here as I'm new to the digital rangefinder style of shooting! I must say that I'm loving shooting the Fuji X100 in low light situations, people just react differently to the smaller package than my Canon 5D Mark II!
Here are a few images that I took this weekend at my wife's grandparents home. The gentleman in these photos is on hospice care now, but at one time was a great member of the Marine Corp.

Butt that's what these images are about! If you saw the woman's face in the first image, you wouldn't likely think about the colors. The second image is about the strange disconnects our consumer society creates. And the third is only about the word "urban" and the scene that surrounds it. :-)

Nice work.. I can't decide which one I like best. You certainly use off horizonal/vertical to creative advantage. Now, how do I get my X100 to take such good photos? Let;s see.. it does have a fully auto setting.

Simon..., OlliL, and Benjie:
Your B&W images are stunning. I'm curious... were these straight our of the camera, using the "monochrome" setting? Or did you post-process them? If so, what software did you use? Thanks.

Nice colors out of the X100:

I like the X100.
Gary, is this one straight from the camera without PS-type (saturation, replace color, etc.) manipulation?/
No.. I wanted strong colors.
Shot RAW only and then lots of manipulation in AP3.0. Increased saturation and vibrance and then worked on blown highlights and shadows. Every shot had blown highlights using matrix metering pre adjustment. That light was brutal.
Simon,
Wonderful portrait. Great detail and expression

http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/data/500/dalby02.jpg
Some shots I have captured over the past month. I love the stealthiness this camera affords. Silent mode is my favorite. I have missed shooting with a "rangefinderish" camera for a while. The high ISO capabilities have exceeded my expectations but the hit or miss focusing has been a greater let down in low light, even with the AF assist. Quirks aside, I have been loving to shoot with it. I hope the manual focus slow issue can be resolved.

The Olympic rain forests are intrinsically very difficult to ascertain any
kind of decent composition. The detail in the landscape is an overlaod
on the brain, and it becomes (for me) a true challenge of where the hell
to point the camera! Mad
I decided that instead of trying to simplify, an almost impossible task,
that I would just go ahead and compose directly onto the "jungle" and
let things fall where they may.
This terrain was very broad and flat, with an area of several square
kilometers, so I used compass bearings to keep in touch with where
the nearest trail was. That trail would take me back to my car.

Your B&W images are stunning. I'm curious... were these straight our of the camera, using the "monochrome" setting? Or did you post-process them? If so, what software did you use? Thanks.

I can't really say much as I don't have an X100 but The trend I'm seeing is that people get a camera like this that is easy to take everywhere and they start just snapping away at nothing. I don't think that just because you are on the street snapping random images, you are a street photographer.
I'm seeing some beautiful images in here but I'm also seeing lots of ho-hum stuff.
I guess with all of the hype surrounding the X100 I expected better...
Well, we all know the X100 is a camera, and it's the person who ruin the photo.
And going by that argument, should we be even more upset by the M9. It costs 5x as much but we don't see 5x as many good shots.
Richard G

You don't need an X100 to make a comment any more valid. This thread is not just street and not just great photos necessarily. But there are some great photos. Meanwhile some of the capacities of the camera are of interest, e.g. the look of macro at f2, or the high ISO performance. I haven't used digital cameras much. The sort of low light things I have been able to do in the last week bowl me over. Some people will come here to see what the camera can do.
Well, some of the images above are quite good and some are not so good. I don't think it has anything to do with the camera and has everything to do with the camera operator. Perhaps this just shows this camera is as good as any other. In that sense it is perfectly capable, not any more or less capable than any other good camera..

I guess what I meant was that, while I appreciate all of it and I can more than appreciate pushing a cameras limits for the sake of presentation of quality, a lot of shots I see with X100s lately are just mundane images of people milling about on busy streets with no rhyme or reason. It's almost becoming a steady trend with this camera.
There are some extraordinary shots here though and I'm extremely impressed with the output of that camera. I keep viewing threads about it with the mindset that I may pick one up...
I wish I had a place that I could go to see one in person.
I think the same can be said of any new camera, or any camera at all in fact.
And, a lot of street photography is just pople milling around on the street.

too much time in ps and silverefex.
don't get me wrong, the files from the camera are great, it's just more complicated to get good black and whites from digital files than from negatives ;)
I agree, I cannot get good B&W at all. And I spend literally minuts on each one ;)

Think of it as 'time spent' as you would in making a good print from a neg. The time you spend in the 'darkroom' is still needed to get that extra % in the look you want - traditional or digital. If an image is deserves it, then the time you spend on it is worth it for the end results.
Well, some of the images above are quite good and some are not so good. I don't think it has anything to do with the camera and has everything to do with the camera operator. Perhaps this just shows this camera is as good as any other. In that sense it is perfectly capable, not any more or less capable than any other good camera..Of course, one is always going to see both good and bad photos from any camera, which makes is difficult to judge image quality from a new camera by pictures on the internet, particularly from the initial pictures one sees from the first people who got the camera, who may not have had enough time to get used to shooting with the camera.
What I found amazing, though, is how good the bulk of the photo were on a thread here of Ricoh DRD3 picture — that thread had a much higher proportion of very good photos than a thread on the LUF taken with the Leice M9 and M8. Of course that does not mean that the GRD3 is a better camera than the Leica M-digital cameras, but only that a lot of good photographers have adopted the GRD3. On the other hand, I've started shooting with the iPhone 4 with Hipstamatic software, in additon to the GRD3 and GXR/A12-28mm and 50mm.

I'm just getting used to this camera, it's an awesome travel camera, great quality.
I still need to watch the exp comp knob. As noted before it needs a lock or stiffer action.
This shot is overexposed due to me shooting in aperture priority at f 2.0 in bright sunlight, it maxes out at 1000th but the warning was missed by yours truly

Patrick as in me? :P Is the pop a good thing? It's just the way I've been editing recently... I convert to B&W and adjust the contrast for a nice B&W curve, then convert it back to colour and everything just pops. :P I figured it's not too popular here on the forum...
Went picnic with good friends that had just got their 2nd child. And the grandparents were visiting.

Shooting the little Fuji at 6400 gives interesting results. The images have a little more grit to them and it seems to tone the saturation down somewhat. These two examples were both shot at ISO 6400 in near impossible light ... find another point point and shoot that can do this!

I love how this thread is most actual photography and not just random snapshots of walls at different iso's which is what i usually see on the nikon forum.
Here are some from today's Pride Parade in San Francisco. The gallery requirements are a little frustrating, because you really have to dial down the quality to get the file size to upload.

Your photos certainly do exemplify what you claim. Very beautiful light indeed. Vermeer comes to mind.
Thanks Richard - that was what I was thinking when I was taking them funnily enough - we're not very far from Holland here in the windy east of England and the light was coming through original leaded light windows - but what impresses me is how well the camera captures that feel in the images.
It does have some quirks in handling and the way it sometimes refuses to wake up for no apparent reason infuriates me, but all in all I'm super-impressed.

I tried everything, it's the first time I got to use one for more than a couple of minutes. zone focus seemed like the right thing to do when flashing into a dark crowd at f8-f16. in "easier" light the AF did a good job most of the time.
I did enable the auto-iso function as a test but didn't really need it so far, I'm sure it can be handy but it's nothing essential.
I'm not sure which firmware is on mine, if it's not up-to-date, is it worth updating?

The update is worth it. The 2 best things for me is...
The locking control wheel...
The small AF target that works in all 3 modes. The rest is gravy.

how do I activate the small AF target (just did the update)? and is it normal for the MF wheel to be so unevenly responsive (well not the wheel, mechanical operation is smooth, but the actual scale/focus)?
Simon,
Go into the menu and look for "corrected AF frame" and turn it on. I may have the exact terminology wrong but you should be able to find something like this. It will only show up with the OVF, of course.
EDIT: This is a feature of the most recent firmware upgrade. If you have 1.00 or even 1.01, you will not have this feature. To check your firmware version, turn off the camera, press the DISP button, and turn it back on. /EDIT
As for the focus ring, yes, it is supposed to change focus faster if you turn the wheel quickly and slower if you turn the wheel slowly. Either way, it takes way too many turns for it to be useful to me. People will argue that the focus ring is supposed to be for fine-tuning focus after you use the AF/AE lock button but, personally, I would have much preferred a more responsive manual focus.

Yeah, I find that to be a cop-out too... manual focus means manual focus with a ring IMO, not push a button and then focus a little. If I want to push a button, I'll just focus with the shutter release button. However, whatever works for the user.

You should try it, Joe. At least to know that you're not missing anything. :p It's not too bad, and it's better after the update. I use MF to set up for fixed-focus/hyperfocal distance shooting.

i bought the camera, took it home and did the update so i have no experience with the x100 in it's original form.
i am not opposed to automation as i know that the image is what i saw and what the camera recorded...we are a team and if my team mate can do more of the heavy lifting...well than so be it.
the rd1 and i started off smoothly together and we only got better...the x100 and i had a more rocky start but we are smoothing out with time and practice.

Hit the AF button, left side...AFS mode, the use that lever, top right to change the size. Move the lever Left or right to get what you want.
Sadly, it doesn't stay small in MF.
BTW, since the update my lens ring works very fast... Dunno.

Another nice feature is that you can go into the setup menu and make the AE/AF-Lock button act like a lock on/off switch. I.e., you press it to lock AE/AF and it stays locked until you press it again. This lets you stay in AF-S mode but take a series of pictures of a particular scene without paying for AF lag and without forcing repeated autofocus-recompose-shoot cycles.

There used to be a Pourhouse in La Jolla, CA, back in the late fifties. It featured cool laid back jazz, like the George Shearing Trio (Marge Hyams, Denzil Best) and Cal Tjader, etc.
Wasn't expensive, so poor college students like me could afford to go there.

Theres something about the colors on this one and the previous ones you posted that I LOVE. Mind sharing what settings/post processing you did?
Thank you.
I just went out two times only, so I left almost everything default on the camera, except white balance which I put one click towards yellow.
The jpgs that come out for me with these settings are quite flat, which I like. I used viveza 2 for some minimal dodging burning ala silver efex pro, and then I used alienexposure 3. This is perhaps similar to the in-camera film modes but I like how with this way you can add it and tone it down after the fact.
The way the photos are now they look a lot like what I saw at the scene. There are some great 'old' colours there of paints and building materials you don't see anymore and some very nice combinations of glows and reflections - so I think you might just like the colours of these backstreets close to my house.
The software does bring it out though.
Do most of you shoot raw? I normally do, but haven't up till now..

Colour raw imported into LR3 with lens correction and then exported to Silver Efex pro 2. Once back in LR3 I exported a reduced file size to Photobucket for web use.
Here's another one from today's walk. The high fence to the left belongs to a theme park, although it looks more like a prison.

Thanks, i'm glad you like it. I am always pleased with how the X100 renders different shades of green and when in Silver Efex these can be enhanced by using the 'filter' function. I love this camera and Silver Efex.

Humm... hard to say, mostly the composition in my photos, I'm lacking that "defining moment" in most of my photos, but I usually take them because of composition. If it looks nice, I'll snap a shot. I hope I answered your question!

I use 100 DR because mostly shoot RAW. On Auto the RAW files are often underexposed even if you shoot RAW+JPEGs.

So a few months ago I sold off all of my Nikon gear and wanted a change.
Eventually I was able to get my hands on the X100 and I think I am in love. Much easier to carry than all of that wonderful Nikon gear - and I am no longer torn which lens to use - for me it's been transformational.
Anyway - I was very excited as the camera came right before our trip up north to visit family. I am not a very good photographer but I enjoy taking pictures and hopefully you may enjoy a few I took on our trip.
Thanks,
drew
