View Full Version : Do 34mm screw-in filters fit Summar?

I recently acquired a B+W 34mm UV/IR filter. It fits perfectly on my Canon 35/2.8 LTM lens, but when I mount it on my 1938 Summar, it won't screw all the way in. I can't tell if that's because the front threads are simply shallower on the Summar than on the filter; or the threads on the lens are messed up (don't think so); or if (heaven forbid) the front lens element protrudes enough that the glass of the filter hits it before it screws in fully.

Anyone with knowledge or experience to share?

Thanks,
Ari

Yes they fit: I use them on mine. Canon made a number of lenses, and filters for them in 34mm, that work quite well.

I am using vintage filters on mine, tend to be a little thicker than B&W?

I'm using a modern, 'optimized for digital' Hoya 34mm filter on mine. :) Hard to find but cheap and multicoated.

There have been threads here in the past about the filter size. It sounded a bit like there may be some variation if I remember correctly.

Ari, did I just sell that to you? It fit my Summar perfectly...that's why I had it!

Yep, that's the one! Did it screw in all the way on your Summar? What vintage is your lens? Sounds like I need to take a closer look at the filter threads on my Summar....

Hmm, it may not have screwed in all the way, I don't recall, though I believe it did. It did screw in quite securely either way.

My S/N is 482xxx, by the way.

Mine is 480xxx, so should be the same mechanics.

I just tried Canon 34mm UV and Hoya 34mm yellow filters on the Summar, and they screw all the way in (and the Canon's glass is mounted right at the edge of the screw threads). Lining the three filters up next to each other, it's apparent that the B+W's screw thread is about 1mm deeper than the other two.

So I guess there's nothing to worry about. I'll just screw in the filter as far as it goes without forcing it, and I'm good to go. :-)

Thanks all for the info, and thanks to John for the nice UV/IR filter!

my pleasure! Sorry, I would have let you know about this but I never even noticed it. The filter worked great for me.

No problem -- when the thing stopped halfway in, I had visions of what happens when you screw a low-clearance filter into a Canon 50/1.2 LTM.
