Reading X100 first-impression reports: my first impression

1) Having a new toy is exciting.

2) Not having handled the toy beforehand brings some dissatisfaction when real handling dispells preconceived ideas formed while having read third-party preconceived ideas.

3) Being an early adopter will leave you singing the Raw File Support Blues

4) High ISO is better than 90% of the main industry's offering, but it's not 100% perfect, per 2) above.

5) Slow delivery dates are a drag.

6) First-impression report fatigue may be determined by new poll.

7) We all like to have fun.

3) Being an early adopter will leave you singing the Raw File Support Blues - yep, until I discovered RPP for the Mac. But I'd like Lightroom support.

4) High ISO is better than 90% of the main industry's offering, but it's not 100% perfect, per 2) above. - perfection is a myth, or a moth, or any other winged fluttery thing. Possibly a Beaver with smaller teeth but I'm not that sure.

5) Slow delivery dates are a drag. - Got mine weeks ago.

6) First-impression report fatigue may be determined by new poll. - yes, create a poll please.

7) We all like to have fun. - I dunno, some of the DSLR folks I meet don't. They like to carry heavy things around. In training for the Heavyneckweight Olympics I suspect. Or they were naughty and are being punished, possibly by the Perfection Beaver mentioned above.

Although, Darwinianly-speaking (if such a concept exists), they're usually right.

The way the X100 threads come about, I wouldn't be surprised.

I'm starting to think that Fuji Japan could care less about the US launch. I think they look at all the pre-orders in the US and let it get to their head. However, how long will prospective buyers wait until they move on.

Some Fuji Canada representatives stated that Fuji had designed and manufactured this camera only to test the market, and were surprised and overwhelmed by the market's reaction. Actually to see if the camera concept was viable before they decide to develop further products along this line. It seems that their productio facilities had not been prepared for the high market demand that it triggered, and that they now have to ramp up their manufacturing way beyond expectations. That would explain shipment delays...

It is also rumoured that Fuji had to do some last-minute fixes on the first batch of cameras that allegedly already has arrived in the US (firmware, hardware tweak, who knows).

I also read that some Fuji rep said they plan to sell 100,000 units. All there is out there is conflicting info. :(

My first impressions are now historical. Classic actually. Insurance premiums way down.

Soon everyone will have one and be knocking at my door to tell me how acute and beautifully worded my observations were.

And they will be wanting to buy my pictures, or at least commission me to do some for them.

What "supposedly" means in practice is that the people who do the bulk of the thinking about it are not engineers at Fuji, but random people on the Internet.

Funnily enough I've long since lost interest in the thing. I contemplated selling my R-D1 for one. I will be selling the Epson, but to fund buying a Rollei instead. For digital, action, colour, macro and snap shots I'll keep my D300, for the rest its MF film cameras in many shapes and sizes. First impressions have made no impression on me.

Oddly enough anticipation of getting an X100 has made me use my D700 a lot more than I generally have until now ... because of this I've realised that digital doesn't really bother me that much and I could actually cope if film went arse up!

I can see it having some merit. The X100 is an obviouis hit for Fuji... unless there is a MASSIVE recall that buries the company.

Yeah, Minolta released it about 40 years ago. Plenty on the secondhand market.
