View Full Version : how many cameras do you use regularly?
Further to the recent poll on beautiful cameras, I have used alot of cameras over the years and still continue to do so. At any one time I may have film in a number of cameras, (plus also use digital) I have also built up a bit of a collection. So I just wondered what was the average amount of cameras the guys here had loaded or being used on a regular basis. At the moment I have the following in use:
Mamiya RB67 Pro S
Fed 2
Voigtlander Vito ii
Sony A100
Minolta X-700 with MD1 Grip
Fujica V2
Minolta Dynax 500si
Rank Aldis
Yashica 35 GSN

Nikon FM
Nikon FE
Nikon EM
Nikon D200
Olympus Mju-II
Canon Canonet GIII QL17
Leica M2
Fuji Finepix F60fd
Sony NEX-3
Hasselblad 500 C/M
Yashica Mat 124
11 cameras.
I use the Leica III and M2 all the time, one loaded with Delta pro 100 and the other with XP2. For a indoor low light situations I usually grab my R7 with the fast glass.
All the other cameras I have around I shoot once a month just to keep them going.

Regularly? None.
Frequently (for over 80% of my pictures), definitely 1-5.
From time to time (for over 80% of the remainder), 6-10
For the remainder (sometimes as little as one roll through a single camera): 15+

For 35mm, my Leica MP. For 120, my Rolleiflex 6006.

These are loaded, the R2a gets used most often and the Rebel S the least.
Bessa R2A
Bessa R
FED 4
FED 5
Kiev 4
EOS Elan IIe
Rebel S
Pentax UC-1
Samsung HZ-50
The Rebels S is used for one lens; I have a P6 mount 500mm mirror lens and the P6 to EOS adapter I have isn't the best as it will lock on to the Rebel S but not the Elan. So I keep the Rebel for the infrequent occasions when I want to use that 500.
And there are a few others that I use infrequently enough that I don't keep film in them: Rolleiflex, Minox B, Fujica ST605n, Pentax ES, Gakkenflex.

It all depends upon what is meant by regularly. The answer lies somewhere in the range of 1 to 11+

I use a Canon 5DMkII, 1DsMkIII, M8, M7, and M4 regularly. I would add the RD-1, but I am sending it off to have the LCD repaired. These cameras are in use weekly. I carry the M cameras almost daily. I have other cameras I think about using but they somehow stay on the shelf when I actually go out.

My M7 does not require so many back ups.
6-10 are in "regular" use I suppose.
Most commonly used, in order from most to slightly less:
Voigtlander Bessa R2S
Nikon S2
Pentax 67
Nikon FE
Olympus XA
Rolleiflex Automat w/ Tessar 3.5
All except Pentax are loaded all the time. I try to use ALL of my cameras at least once every couple months.. doesn't always happen.
Lately (the last month or so) my most used rotation would include:
Leica M7
Contax N1
Leica M8
Olympus XA
About 10 other rotate in here and there.

In film cameras, a Nikon S2, a Kiev-IIa and a host of Olympus cameras, including an Ace rangefinder; Pen F and FT half-frame SLRs; an FTL SLR; two OM-1Ns, two OM-2Ns, an OM-2S, an OM-4 and an OM-4T. In digital, a Canon D60 (ancient, I know, but still quite useful) and an Olympus E-500.
By "Regularly" I would mean a number of cameras rotating on perhaps a weekly or at most two to three month basis. But, that is my own definition, yours may be entirely different.

I use a whole array of Leica M cameras including a 0-series: M3, M4-P, M6, MP, M8 (rarely though); and a bunch of old Nikons: F, F2, FM, FE, FE2.
I'm also using some exotic stuff like a british Ensign, some old Retina and recently a Robot Royal 36 !
I like my gear solid and made with metal and glass and fully operational and none of my cameras shows defective on anything.
Edit: I forgot to mention the IIIF, IIIC !

If I don't use a camera within a calendar year, it's either decorative (I have a shelf of these, none cost more than $15), or I'll sell it. I should probably sell the T4 super soon. Here are the ones that get regular use:
Ebony 45SU
Fuji GA645zi
Mamiya 645E
Leica M6TTL
Panasonic TZ-3 digital P&S
Panasonic LZ8 smaller digital P&S that takes AA batteries
iPhone
Film: leica iii, iiig, m4, m6, m7, cl, oly om2
digital: panasonic gf1 (I have used the canon 40d only for gear close-ups since I bought the gf1, about a year ago).
My favorites are: Hexar AF, Nikon F100 and Minolta Autocord. I use these regularly but only one at the time. I have a bunch of other cameras in the closet but they don't get used very often.

Leica III (for lens flexibility)
Olympus 35RD and 35SP (used interchangeably, usually loaded with different speed film)
Lynx 14 (low light, faster than anything else I have)
Retina IIIc (compact, also used for very sharp shots)
Autocord (general MF camera, 6x6)
Zenobia (compact MF camera 6x4.5)
Tachihara (LF)
I'm a bit over the top in the compact RF area. I'd love to filter this down but I really enjoy using all of these cameras and each has enough variation to justify use. Should I end up with a faster LTM lens at some point, the Lynx may go but I really love the results I get out of its lens.
I have a bunch of other cameras I use less. I've sold a handful recently and within a year will probably have another purge of cameras - not the ones in the list above - which aren't getting enough use. I just want to shoot for a little while longer to be sure I know which are my most frequent users first. One or two are painful as I use them periodically for special situations but possibly not enough to keep around. Intentionally unlisted this time to avoid implied sales. ;)

I have three Olympus E-520 SLRs in underwater housings. I do not like to open the housings on boats, so I swap the cameras after about 500 shots. I use these several times a month. Here are some recent examples from Catalina Island (http://diver.net/californiadiveboats.com/GreatEscape/2011.03.18-19/) and Santa Barbara Island (http://diver.net/californiadiveboats.com/Peace/2011.01.29-30/).
I have two Olympus E-410s I also take on those trips for topside photos with different lenses. I sometimes use them for taking 3D images (http://3d-photography.com/2010.08.02/).
I have another Olympus E-520 with a Leica 25mm f/1.4 lens I use for low light photos (example (http://diver.net/chris/2010.12.13/)).
I have been using my "new" Olympus 35SP quite a bit lately becasue it is so easy to carry, easy to use,and has a great lens. (examples (http://chrisgrossman.com/35sp/)). I keep it with me most of the time.
I have a Fuji GA645zi (http://chrisgrossman.com/ga645zi/) I have been use quite a bit becasue it is the lightest easiest medium format camera I have. If I am out walking intentionally looking to take film photos this camera I usually take.
I have two 6x9 Fuji rangefinders I use mostly for landscape shots. Both a GW690 (http://chrisgrossman.com/gw690) & GSW690ii (http://chrisgrossman.com/gsw690ii/).
I have two Nikon SLRs and an assortment of lenses. I loke to use the FE and a Nikkor 85mm f/2 AI-S for candid portraits (http://chrisgrossman.com/chris/2010.12.24-26.black_and_white/).
In that last two weeks I have been using a Pentax 6x7. I'm not sure I really like this camera but I have gotten a few photos (http://rangefinderforum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1587947&postcount=367) with it.
I have not used my 3D cameras (http://3d-photography.com/) much in the past year, but I occasionally use a Fuji W1 (http://3d-photography.com/Clipperton_Island/) digital for topside photos on dive trips (http://diver.net/californiadiveboats.com/Magician/2011.03.05/) becasue it packs well.

Works for me. On a weekly basis, it is normally one or two. Sometimes as much as 3-4. I suppose I should count the iPod Touch, but it's so low-res I consider it toy, rather than a camera (I'm one of those people that loves Hipstamatic).
So far this year I've shot almost entirely with my Leica M6 TTL, though I had a good day out with my Hasselblad, and put 4 rolls through it (I think that's more than I've shot with my DSLR this year). The weather hasn't been good enough to do anything with one of my Large Format cameras, and no reason since last fall to use a Nikon 35mm SLR.
All told I use about 7 cameras, but normally a max of 3.

I voted 6-10...I regularly use about eight...No need to list them, I know what they are...

I use max 2 cameras on daily basis, but monthly sometimes 3-5 cameras changing one to the other. The reason is also I think it's not good for the camera's mechanical parts if we don't use it at all. That's why I try to use several cameras.

I can not imagine how it should be technically possible to use more than 2 or 3 cameras regularly. If I use a camera once a month or less I probably would say so.
I use regularly Mamiya 6 and semi-regularly some 35mm film camera I own at given time. DSLR and 4x5" get less use - a pity in particular with the 4x5".
First option. I don't even have more than 5 cameras overall. Three see very frequent use (a NEX-3, an Oly-XA2, and a Nikon-D90). The other two (a Nikon F65 and a Bessa-T) are used intermittently..

Let's see...I have an M3,M2, and an M6, A Contaflex, Crown Graphic, Fed 5, Olympus E-510, Minolta SRT, and Rolleiflex Automat X.
The Fed is a paperweight. It works fine but just feels cheap. The Minolta only has one lens, a 135mm. The Crown Graphic I haven't used since college, The Rollei probably gets about a roll or two a year when i'm in the mood the shoot square.
The M3 was my go to camera in college, used mostly with a Canon 50/1.8 and eventually a VC 28/1.9. After feeling that 28mm was to wide for my uses I sold it, bought an M2 and a 35/2 Biogon. I loved it and still use it on a regular basis. Last fall when I had what you could call a disposable income and after wanting a Summilux for ages I bit the bullet on a pre-asph and love it, Then I got the idea I needed a body for the lens and along came the M6.
So as it stands the M2 and the M6 get the most use. I use the M2 with Tri-X rated at 200, and the M6 with Tri-X rated at 800-1600. Seems to be working out quite well so far.
Leica M6 and then Nikon D700 :)

Now the graphic is sitting, cause a Rolliecord came to live here, so it's number one and nothing else being used.
The linholf technika has been calling, a guy from work left a Pentax 645 with 5 lenses for me to play with.
I guess my ideal kit would be my old Nikons, the Linholf followed by the "photo du jour".
I'd really like another C33 to join the show here, I really liked that camera.
Konica Hexar AF for 90% of my photos. I love this camera but I can honestly say that I only use it because I cannot afford a real rangefinder with a lens of equal quality.
Rolleiflex 3.5F when I am in the mood for sqaures.
Nikon F5 with 28mm and 50mm AI-S lenses when the weather is not cooperative: rainstorms, snowstorms, dust/sandstorms, earthquakes, typhoons, and Armageddon in general...

Regularly is tough to define. I'd say in a typical 2-3 month period I use more than 5 cameras, so I voted 6-10.
I seem to acquire new cameras regularly, and I always put a roll through the new one. But I also get back to reusing my favorites, or at least my recent favorites. Here are my current faves:
Canon F-1 (old)
Leica M6 Classic
Canon 7
Kodak Retina IIc
Kodak Signet 35
Minolta 'A'
Olympus Pen F (Gothic)

This is an update from my post on page 2. I now use 3 to 4 cameras regularly. Leica MP, M7, Zeiss Super Ikonta III or IV and Nikon S3. I usually have 2 Leicas and my Zeiss Ikonta with me for most shooting. Jim
I use regularly:
Nikon D300s
Leica M3
Bessa R
Regards,
Ted G
okay, i'm definitely not the only one here with a serious "camera problem". In terms of "regulary" - more than three times a month.
Permanent and daily companions:
(I keep changing without any special order. Normaly i´ve one of these camera with me for erveryday shooting.)
- Nikon S3 Y2000
- Zeiss ZM
- Hasselblad XPan
- Rollei 35
- Nikon F3 HP
Infrequent use:
- Nikon FE 2x
- Hasselblad 500C/M
- Pentax 645N II
- Kodak Retina IIIc
- Zeiss Ikon, Nettar IIb 518/16
At the moment I'm down to 2, but I've never been one to be able to divide myself between too many cameras.
Pentax 67
Nikon FM2n
The Pentax is in use to tide me over until I replace the 4x5 kit I sold a few weeks ago and the Nikon is because I can't afford a nice M2/M6/Hexar RF at the moment, so it lives with the 45mm pancake on it all the time as my 'compact' camera. Once I replace the 4x5 and eventually pick up a nice Leica I think I'll be set.
I have on a table 12 cameras for a project I am working through, it involves a lot of experimentation. I will over the time knock the number of cameras down but as I will be using various types of photographic media from small Fuji Instax and Polaroid passport cameras I am stuck using a fair few cameras. To think I had got my working down to 6 cameras, mainly on where I was going, never setting out with more than 3 (one not used backup) I am shocked with myself. There is not one digital amongst them as well, it will cost me a fortune in film, oh well.

With 7 different _kinds_ of cameras (SLR (digital and film), TLR, RF, Point & Shoot (digital and film), and Fixed Lens RF), and two or more cameras in all but one of those categories, I keep busy trying them all out. Never gets boring that way. It is the shotgun approach to photographic equipment.

I presently own 11 cameras, but use my Leica M4-P and MP the most often.
I've downsized my collection (25+) somewhat and in the past most often gone to my Canon P and L1, but now I'm dedicated to use all of them in rotation.

See my .sig.
I use many cameras, but I use fewer "regularly".
I have several camera bags ready with cameras and lenses, and I siwtch each weekend to another combo.
1. Leica M6 + Leica M3 are now in a bag together, with Summicron 35/2, Summicron 50/1, and Summilux 75mm/1.4.
2. Contax G1 (two bodies) are in another bag ready for use: 28mm/2.8, 45mm/2.0, 90mm/2.8
3. Rolleiflex 2.8D is in a small bag by itself.
4. I often use the Minox 35GT as an additional camera, thrown into any camera bag.
5. The Canon T90 and F1N are used with Canon L lenses once in a while. They have their own camera bag.
6. The Rolleiflex 35mm SLR cameras are often used with Zeiss lenses.
7. Standard Leica with Canon 19mm 3.5 or Minolta 21mm/4.
Now I also have a camera bag for my digital EP-2.
Life is good.
Have a wonderful holidays season.

The following cameras get the most use:
Canon 630--mostly for travel slides
Canon Kiss IIIL--for serious color prints
Rollei Prego 90--for family gathering color prints
Yashica T4D--for grandchildren at our house color prints
I sometime use a Leica Mini III or Olympus Infinity Stylus in place of the Yashica T4D for a little variety. I also have several other cameras loaded with film but do not use them regularly.

I pretty much never leave the house without my Nex 5n and my X100 in my bag and my iPhone 4s in my pocket. The last 2 times I went out I only took a single camera/lens setup with me and found it totally liberating, so that will likely become my new strategy. Adding a M4-2 to the mix shortly, and that will get added to the rotation. Going to start some projects next year to make sure all of my gear gets the attention deserved.
I have large collection of cheap bodies and to keep them in working order use all of them few times in a year, but my basic camera bunch consist of minoltas: X700, X570, X370, XG-M, sr-T SC-II, then two M42 cosinas, then pentax program plus and SF-1n.
I find that if I'm jumping around between too many cameras and lenses, too often, I 'get lost in the gear' and find myself distracted. So although I've got a fair brace of cameras and lenses to work with, I'll tend to concentrate on one or two cameras and a couple of lenses for long periods of time.
I've acquired too much gear this past year so I'll be spending 2012 making photographs, selling off gear I no longer use, and trying to stay away from places that incite my magpie syndrome to nag me to buy more cameras. For film, I'm concentrating on the Leica M4-2. For digital, I'm concentrating on the Ricoh GXR-M. Two cameras, two formats, shared lenses.

All of my "normal" cameras get regular use, although the notion of regularity depends on the camera...
The LF gear does 50 clicks a year at most.
The Rolleiflex shot close to 150 films last year.
The Hasselblad about two rolls a month
The 35mm is about 20 rolls a year

Seven of the Minolta SRT type, and four of the Canon RF type. All presently loaded with difffernt types of B&W film.
If "regularly" implies weekly use: I use regularly Leica M6, M3, Bessa T, Minox GT,
If we look at usage each month, I would add to the above mix the Standard Leica and the Hexar RF.
These are my workhorses.
I also use here and there the MF cameras, such as the Roleliflex TLR and the Graflex.
Least usage is for my SLR cameras.
I have never used my Linhof 4x5 camera .... something that bugs me.

My main workhorse is the Minolta 9xi but the Canon EOS 5 also gets a lot of use. Then it is a Leica IIc and finally a FED-3b. I also have a EOS 300V and a Zenit 12XP which are semi-retired - only for holidays when weight is an issue (300V) or when organising photography groups at work (Zenit). I also use a Fuji DL Supermini as a carry-everywhere camera.
Down to 2 now, my GAS was getting out of hand, so I decided to sell everything but two cameras, I use them more already, and film does not sit around in them so long.
In regular list ordered by most time to least but still regular: Canon 5D2, Fuji x100, Canon s90, and Leica M9-P. Explanation. The 5D2 is the most versatile. I might have two others along with lenses, e.g. I might primarily plan to use the Bigma on the 5D2 and have either the M9-p or Fuji along for short work.
I've got more film cameras than shelves and try to rotate through them. Lost count but have about 15 Leicas from IIICs, 111fs, 111g, m6 TTL, etc. Have four going out for CLA, but otherwise they need to be exercised. Same for others. If I can, I'd rather shoot them as opposed to working them.

Before controlling my GAS, I acquired more cameras than I can easily use. I do try to use them from time to time, but many haven't been used in a long time. Most recently I have used my XA, my 167mt, and my Fujica 901. Even their use is sporadic. However, yesterday morning as I started to drive by the Mall in Washington, DC, and saw low lying fog lit by both street lights but more by the sun rise. I had to stop and grab the 167mt for a few shots. Felt good.
For film, I have a Nikon EL wedded to a 35 f2 Nikkor, an OM-2 & a 28 2.8 Tokina, a Vgtl R3A & a 50 summicron (v4), & a Mamiya 645AF with assorted lenses. Digitally speaking a Sony A550 & an assortment of lenses, a Samsung EX1, and a cheap canon point-n-shoot, which is prolly the most fun.

i have 3 cameras that i use almost every day.
#1 is definitely my Ricoh GRD III - it's in one of my pockets or my work bag ALL the time, literally never go out without it. it's just too convenient. I get a lot of interesting shots on this. with the viewfinder on it and set into stealth mode I can get interesting snaps in under 3 seconds even if the camera's off and in my pocket.
#2 is my epson R-D1 digital rangefinder. unfortunately it's not that compact so it only comes out when i'm actually out photographing rather than just walking around.
#3 is my new to me rolleiflex 3.5. I like this camera. fun to shoot. the negatives are huge but easier to handle than 4x5 film, and much more economical. i like the 120 square format a lot.
#4 last up is my Kiev 4 with a beautiful Jupiter-8 on it, both from 1959. I should use this more but I just love my Epson R-D1 so much..!
#5 I do also have a Bessa R but since it's almost the same camera as the D1 I never use it anymore
Ummmm
I only own 3, and use 2 regularly....One is Film (I have 2), and One Digital, my main camera.

The ones in my signature are what I stick to 99.9% of the time. It covers me with a variety of formats (35/120/2 types of instant) and high quality equipment that I know can still be serviced. Which is a big factor when I chose to assemble my kit.
