My daughter needs a color printer to make pictures for my granddaugher's weekly "experience" books. For the most part, she will be printing 4X6" or 5x7" with quality equivalent to what she gets when she takes a memory card to CVS. FWIW her camera is a 12mp Pentax point-and-shoot type.
What type of printer do you suggest?
A printer like the epson artisan 50 would be about right.

Any A4 / Letter sized Epson or Canon "photo" printer would do the job nicely. Perhaps HP as well (I've not used one, and have some objections to HP because of their "country" chipping of printers and inks and as someone who was shafted when HP took over the company I once worked for). I have an old Canon i4500 which works just fine for small colour prints on gloss paper. I suspect dye-based inks would work best in this application as they're quick drying (the ink is deposited in the substrate of the paper, rather than sitting on the surface as with pigment inks) but that's probably a detail. For larger prints or papers best used with pigment inks I use a Canon Pro9500, but that's way over the top for your application.
