I just got a used M6 ttl. It is my first Leica. I have been lurking on here for the past few weeks.

The camera looks mint. I just have a noob question about the rewind crank. I haven't put one roll of film through it yet since I am still lens shopping. However, I notice that when I spin the crank, it has resistance only at one point of the turn. It spins freely, until on spot then becomes more difficult to turn for a few mm. Is this a normal characteristic? It almost feels like something is bent inside, but I am new to this camera and have no idea.

Thanks.

It could have been dropped at one point, and now the crank knob or axle is slightly bent, leading to rubbing when you rotate it at the point of impact.

That's pretty normal for an M6ttl that has been dropped or dinged on the rewind crank. I think DAG or Sherry Krauter can replace the shaft on the rewind crank for not too much money. If possible, ask if they can use a crank from an M4 -- they're a little tougher.

Aha. That makes sense. It doesn't seem too bad, but maybe I could get this taken care of if I decide to do the viewfinder upgrade.

Thanks for the help.

The only way to accurately determine if the camera is indeed working is to use it. May I recommend that you purchase a lens and use the camera. You may discover that your qualms are inhibiting. On a personal basis when I purchase a camera or lens I just use it. If the photographs come out to my liking then I accept the camera or lens.

I can't wait to use it! I'm saving up for a lens. This beautiful camera just stares at me everyday (or vise versa). It's driving me crazy!

I remember that feeling. Around 1960 or so I bought my first Leica, an M2. I took it home in its pretty red and white box, and admired it while I saved for the lens. Then I bought a 35mm f/2.8 Summaron. I still have them!

Getting there is half the fun.
