Some days ago someone talked about the idea of ordering an X100 as a RFF members' gift to Keith. I think that would be really cool! The camera would see good use in his gallery shooting for sure.

Why don't we do it? $10 per member and it will be a really, really nice story...

Who's in?

C'mon, I know we're more than only 120 kind people around here!

A friend of many of us here on RFF, hunz. His name on RFF is "Keith", in case you want to check who he is from his posts.

He's getting an X100 as a gift from his friends.

If you don't know him, maybe you have little to do here...

Nice to meet you!

I like the hat on his avatar a lot too! Keith is to me one of the most sensitive and intelligent photographers posting here. I like his posts and his humor deeply. He deserves that X100!

I've just got home from the shops to discover a PM from Juan and a link to this thread and I really don't know quite what to say ... except that the quality of the people at this site never fails to absolutely stun me. Maybe it's the rangefinder thing that attracts souls who are a little different to the rest because a lot of the amazing generosity and kindness I see here is missing in other forums I've visited.

Of course I want an X100 ... who doesn't but financially I have no hope at the moment and have actually sold gear over the last few months to keep a roof over my head and food on the table. Several cameras, some lenses and my beloved Vespa have gone by the way to achieve this. I had a reasonably lucrative one day a week job that along with the occasional paid gig photographing gallery openings was keeping me afloat but unfortunately the part time job evaporated last year and the money I get from the infrequent photography work is way short of what a person can live on. You have to do what you have to do to survive in this world and I'm optomistic enough to think that if I tighten my belt and ride the situation out things will improve. There are people around a lot worse off than myself ... you only have to open your eyes and look around to realise this.

I can only accept such generosity on this condition ... and that is that this camera cannot be sold by me. If circumstances arise that prevent me from using the camera or I just plain don't want it ... it would have to go to another forum member in need who may also be struggling with money and life generally. I'm very serious about this committment and only see it as being fair.

Juan ... you're an amazing guy to think of doing such a thing for another person on the other side of the world and even if it doesn't come to fruition financially I'll have been deeply affected by it's inception and the basic goodness of my fellow human beings. Particularly the ones who inhabit this incredible forum.

Keith.

Someone has just suggested I give a progress update which is a good idea. (thanks jon)

To this point ...$480.00 AMAZING STUFF!

The price of the Fuji seems to have settled at around $1200.00 in OZ with not a lot of variation from that figure which surprises me because normally we get horribly stitched up for these types of products. I saw the Zeiss Ikon listed at around $2500.00 at one seller's site when I was browsing the other day!

There is a very reputable company on the other side of Brisbane (Digital Camera Warehouse) who are advertising the camera for $1220.00 ... I bought some 8 gig CF cards from them a while ago and their service was excellent. I'll probably ring them tomorrow morning and place an order for the Fuji ... as to how long I'll have to wait at this stage who knows? I would have to suspect their first shipment may be all gone but for me there is no huge rush because I wasn't really expecting to own this camera in the near future.

I'll know more when I've spoken to them in the morning! :)

We're doing it transferring funds from paypal account to paypal account:

When you're registered on Paypal, you (all of us) have an ID (your "paypal name": it's an email address you already set when you registered) and paypal already knows from which of your accounts you want them to take the money (you set that too on registry)... Once you go into Paypal's page anytime, you just click send money, and you'll be asked about the ID (member's Paypal "name": email address) you want them to give your money to... It takes less than one minute if you're already registered... If not, it doesn't take too long to register...

Cheers,

Juan

Good morning you fabulous RFFers! :D

I remember as a child that the night before Christmas morning was spent tossing and turning in bed, trying to go to sleep to make the morning arrive more quickly. Then waking at some ungodly hour, a little sleep deprived, but with a sense that it was now the most amazing day of the year.

As they say ... "deja vu, all over again!" :p

I hear you, Keith. The past three years have been incredibly tough for me, too, so I just want you to know that if it weren't for those difficult circmustances, I'd be pitching in as well.

I sincerely hope things improve for you. :)

Since Fringe reminds me of The X-Files (but improved), and you're an Aussie, and also took up the gigantic task of scanning those old negatives left by the Austrian lady who traveled the world in the 30s, and also have had a Nikon D70 and a Leica M8 besides innumerable other cameras, and you're always cool about your toys... well, there you go! ;)

Besides, Anna Torv is probably the one and only actress I'd like to meet. She likes cats, and is also a remarkable and intelligent thespian. Now, if she also dabbled in photography...

How much is there in the fund?

Juan - a lovely idea. And a very worthy recipient. Look what can happen in a few short hours. Happily in, and happy Fuji fun Keith.

I was in a course on leadership recently and the topic of "what is a community?" was raised. I pointed to RFF and the many examples of simple humanity and friendship that have arisen here since I first joined. These small acts of thoughtfulness from people who have often never even met face to face enrich us all.

Wow .. that's a fantastic gesture and very much appreciated.

When I spoke to the guy at the camera dealer's this morning he said he wasn't sure if the associated accessories were arriving with the cameras and couldn't guarantee being able to supply a hood and adapter ring with the camera when I pick it up. With the sort of light we have here in Oz a hood is always a wise option IMO.

It's 4.30pm Sat here and I'm about to head of to Carol's (the GF's) place and won't be home until this time tomorrow. (Sunday)

The current total is not far away from the $1220.00 they want for the X100 when it gets here and seeing as Precision Camera have been good enough to throw in a lens hood and adapter that's it ... I need nothing else!

Carol doesn't have internet at her place, in fact she doesn't even have electricity, so I won't be able to check in again for twenty four hours. If the total should go slightly over the required amount I'll donate the excess to a charity like World Vision/Save The Children or something similar.

Didn't see this thread until this afternoon (GMT +1) but it made my day. Congrats to all of you who contributed. Personally, I don't use PayPal, as I never felt the need for it, until today!

Of course I could open an account, but since it looks like the flash money has already reached the requiered amount, I'm afraid that'd be a little overkill.

On the other hand, I could open one and ask all of you for a small donation to buy Juan a double magnum of cava or a good Speyside . But I'll definitely buy him some beers if we ever meet (both living in Barcelona, and yes Juan, I also was there at the Winogrand exhibition opening :)).

7.30pm Sunday night ... PayPal balance: $1,302.59 AUD

Wow ... probably enough to get some decent SDHC memory cards seeing as I included all my SD cards with my M8 when I sold it to Avotius a while ago! I actually didn't think I'd ever need them again as my Nikon takes CF. I have a Deluxe Luigi strap in dark tan that will probably look ok with the Fuji ... maybe a slight colour clash but not too bad surely! :D

I'm still reeling a little from all this and when I was trying to explain it to Carol last night her reaction was ... "Who's paying for this new Fuji camera that you told me you didn't need any more last week? Why are they doing this?" :D

I had actually talked myself out of this camera and convinced myself that it wasn't just beause I couldn't afford it ... I didn't really want or need it! Total BS obviously because I can't wait to get my hands on it! :p

This needs to happen to other more deserving souls on this forum occasionally ... there's no reason why we can't do this once or twice a year and I would love to be involved in the other side of the equation. Even in the hardest times I would always manage to find ten dollars to be able to make someone feel as over awed as I do at the moment. :)
