I got home late from my photography club meeting in Goldsboro tonight. No sooner had I grabbed a brewski than the neighbors were at the door - this late? These were the neighbors whose window I knocked out with my weed wacker, mind you.

"Oh, you have to come quick, come quick - bring your camera!" They shouted at me.

I grabbed my camera and ran. Turned out - a Night Blooming Cerious plant. Only blooms one night per year and some years not at all. The found it in a pot under their bushes and set it on the porch - and away it went.

You can see the originals here if you want that kind of detail:

Anyway, I took these hand-held, with my Pentax *ist DS and a Pentax Super-Multi-Coated 50mm f1.4 at f16, 1/180, ISO 200 setting. Diggin' it.

Anyway, gotta finish my brewski and skeedaddle off to bed. G'night!

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks

Hey, glad you like it. The neighbors are planning to sit up tonight and watch this flower do its thing. What a neighborhood I live in, ya know? I wish everybody could have neighbors like ours.

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks

Very cool. Thanks for sharing that.

It's weird, there is a part of me that thinks this would have been a "better" story if the camera had not been digital. Oh well, that's just my bias showing. (Oh gosh, is my bias showing?)

I dunno know about sitting up and watching the flower. I mean... Was there a meteor shower last night? You might wake up tomorrow with the neighbors insisting you keep one of it's pods in your house.

Somewhere between "Triffids" and "Invasion of the Body Snatchers."

Possibly even "Little Shop of Horrors."

"Seemo', Feeeeeeeeeed me"

If it blooms only one night a year does that mean it is a weed for the other 364?

Actually, very nice shots Bill. Interesting that it blooms at night. I wonder why? Nature is full of things like this little bud. At UConn they have a plant that blooms about as often as Mr. Spock gets frisky. The odd thing about it is that when it blooms it lets off the odor of rotting flesh. People line up to see this thing when it pops. Yuk

OMG!!! Those things grow in NC!! I had no idea!

They have completely killed two trees in my in-laws backyard in Florida! It's so bad, you can't even see the tree trunks for them. I believe my father-in-law would have to set the them on fire to get rid of the damn things!
