Hi,

today this came in the mail:

It's a Horseman Convertible Wide Angle camera, type 842.

The lens is a 62/5.6 Horseman lens, that was probably made by Topcon. Speeds from 1/1 to 1/500 and B, smallest aperture is 32.
Aperture and shutter are nice and snappy, lens could do with an internal clean but I have not shot film yet so it may not need it at all.

At the moment is has a 220 roll film holder fitted, 6x7cms. Which I want to replace with a 120 roll film holder, 6x9cms so I can take full advantage of the frame size. The film holders on this camera are interchangeable with my Horseman 970, while the Press holder from my 970 does not fit this 842. Oh well.

The 62mm on 6x9 translates to approx 25mm on 135mm film

It was expensive but since I plan to (carefully) use the heck out of it, I'll be fine. I partially funded it by selling off boxes of small stuff and some unused lenses on eBay.

Anybody that can help me find a 120 roll film holder in 6x9 size, identical to the one the camera currently has?

And by that, I didn't mean "sell me yours"! :D

PM sent on the price I bought it for, so you will have a bench mark price when looking for one!

This looks awesome - congrats! Can you fit a 6x9 ground glass back to this thing?

Yes I can! On my 970 I use a modified Graflex ground glass back since the 970 came without a ground glass (press camera) and that also fits the 842.

Since yesterday, there's ten rolls of Portra 400VC in 220 in the mail.

I'll be travelling to Bulgaria in two weeks time and will take the 842 with me to the Roman Amfitheatre in Plovdiv:

Can't wait to see what my shots will look like!

Very cool camera, I haven't seen this model before. Have fun in Bulgaria. Plovdiv is a really photogenic city, and not only the amphitheater.

How is your trial shots results of the Horseman? Any experience or photos to share?

Hi Eric,

I'm still working on getting a roll full of shots!

Meanwhile I learned that the group I will be travelling with, will not visit Plovdiv, so no amfitheatre. But, lots of other interesting places are on the list, and I reckon I will find something nice to shoot!

Once I've got something worth showing I'll post it here.

I love this shot for the alienesque building and dito lighting quality. It's out of this world.

I saw one of these cameras today (it sat a couple of shelves above a Ricoh GR 28/2.8) and was so totally intrigued by it. Never saw such a camera before. Now my question is: how do you focus with this thing - external RF?

I have a couple of the earlier model 120 6X9 holders and can sell them but being in the States the shipping could be too much.

A later model Horseman 6X9 holders are interchangeable on my Horseman 980. (I am assuming that the Horseman convertible uses standard backs.)

I have a Mamiya Press with the rangefinder removed (commonly called flattop) and a 65mm lens installed which was very usable on my last trip to Eastern Europe. The thing is heavy though!

I'm on the lookout to see if I can get a polaroid back on mine. I own this camera as well, I have a 6x8 120 back and a 6x9 120 back. Would be nice for a 220 back as well.

The next thing on the list is an external optical viewfinder...

220 is still available, so don't get me wrong. However, the emulsions are limited.

I like to shoot 120 because of the backing paper. Unless I am very careful on loading and unloading 220 likes to unspool and light leaks happen and affect more of the frames.

I also don't like to have that many shots in the camera. One of my camera's is a Fuji G690bl, just CLA'd and in great shape. When I shoot these big rangefinders, I usually end up with film in the camera after going out shooting, with an unfinished 220 roll.

I know I wouldn't spend extra money for a camera that needed a special back for 220.
