The thing that gets me about the DP series is the gas is being driven purely by image quality from the sensor and lens and little else. We know the camera is a sluggish focuser and the write speed is ponderous ... and you certainly can't get too excited about the utilitarian styling.

People looked at the X100 and said ... "I have to have one!" ... Olympus cashed in on the heritage and looks of the OM series. ... Sony made a full frame because they know there's people out there chomping at the bit who will pay whatever they have to for the first full frame compact!

This camera is filling a niche for photographers who base their purchase decisions on the image quality and they'll live with the physical shortcomings it offers. (or not) I find this incredibly refreshing in this day and age where we base so much of our opinions on the way something looks. I went down this path when I bought an OMD so I speak from experience!

someone will list one in the classifieds eventually, but the current sale runs though june, so it wouldn't surprise me if people who bought at full price wait until the sale is over to sell. then again, it wouldn't surprise me if the sale doesn't end in june and 799 becomes the new price. in other words, now is a good time to buy. :D

You're not helping ... well I guess you are actually! :D

With that B&H price it does seem unlikely that one will appear in the classifieds for much less than the current discounted rate that they're offering.

I'm weakening ...

the getdpi dp2m image thread is what got me. there are some links to full size pics that show what this sensor and lens combo can do. view at your own risk. :p

Lol. U forgot the worst offender. A raw sw converter that make Fuji's Silky Pix look like a winner :(

Btw I forgot to mention my last set of pics were all done using mid size raw. Plus the shots of the musicians are both 50% crops.

Keith, the bottom line is that the results from this camera, at this price, are unique. The focus speed has improved greatly with the FW updates (many reviews are based on older firmware) and the write speed only effects you if you are chimper. The styling is quite nice if you are a fan of brick style cameras, as I am. The lens on it looks like a real lens unlike the X2's P&S style retracting number.

Garry,
You got yourself a real nice series. Those images are; crispy, pretty and yummy...
You captured the jumping "frog king", but the real princess is the one that you hold in your hands – the greet SIGMA DP2 Merrill.
Nice Job.

Interesting..

Is the af on the d3m about the same as dp2m?

Gary

I tend to prefer 50mm on full frame, on medium format, and now on this dp camera. Don't ask me why, it could just be the way it treats spacial relations.
Everything about the camera feels just a bit snappier, though it is still the same camera through and through. New firmware is available for the DP2 already, which I'm sure will bring it in line with the DP3. The AF Limit mode is customizable, which is pretty cool.
